    4 years ago this video randomly showed up on my recommendation page back when I was still a high school kid. Fast forward to now, I have accepted my first M&A strategy consulting internship. I am truly grateful that I have saw your video and this video truly inspired me when I first entered university and thinking about what career I want to pursue. I look back and rewatch this video over and over again to continuously motivate myself. Now I can finally say that I have made it. Thank you!

    2 year update! I just got an entry level specialist position (step below consultant) at a Healthcare tech company and I'll be traveling a lot as part of the role, this vlog is will be my reality in a couple of months! This video is still relevant to me 2 years later as I plan on working my way up to the Consultant level within the company!

    I avoided a career in consulting because of all the travelling that it required... but now in my current non-consulting position, because my clients are all over the world, I still ended up needing to travel a bit. I hate living out of my suitcase, but do enjoy the work I do. Your day looks so similar to mine! Back-to-back calls, rushing to client lunch, more calls in the car, webex when I get home. I enjoy being busy though, and it looks like you do too!

    I'm considering becoming a consultant post-grad. I've had so many jobs where I sit at a desk and practically stare at a computer all day and it is very dull and draining. I'm looking forward to every day being different along with working on challenging projects that will keep me on my toes! I don't have any consulting experience so watching these kinds of vlogs is very helpful for me!

      Usually they tell you the stuff you already know and let you do the slides that they sell you for more what you earn in a year. A consultant would charge you for that, I do it as a favor. That also explains why I'm not rich, and not a consultant.

    Currently working as a consultant for one of the big 4. All I can say is that being a consultant requires you to be flexible when it comes to skillset, time and knowledge depending on the project you were assigned. You'll come across with different clients, some are difficult to work with and some are one of the best.

    In medical field, a doctor would start his/her career as a houseman (1)
    2 years later: Get license and become a medical officer (2)
    4 years later: Qualify to apply & enrol in a master's degree program or post-graduate study equivalent in specialty & sub-specialty of his/her choice.
    2 years later: Finished study, becomes a clinical specialist (3)
    3~4 years later: Becomes a consultant (4) after completing specialty & sub-specialty training.
    Consultant nephrologist, Consultant cardiologist, Consultant neurosurgeon, Consultant orthopaedic surgeon,
    Etc.
    These consultants are typically attached to a hospital. Very rarely as visiting consultants.
    Consultant is at 4th level in medical field, which is the maximum a doctor could climb. Further north is just a 'senior'. Senior Consultant Xxxxx is the same as consultant Xxxxx, no further study and/or training needed. Just with more experience.
    On the other hand, consultants who work at McKinsey & Company, Boston Consulting Group or Bain & Company will are external staffs who consult certain companies which need bird-eye view on their business. Or on specific task. They consult many companies, deal with so many chairmen, directors, Presidents, CEOs, COOs, CFOs SVPs, VPs, etc, don't they?
    A consultant civil & structure engineer in a high-rise condominium project consults developer & contractor. Like a man who is in between of an owner and contractor.
    Point is: The term consultant is widely used and could be loosely defined. It spans across many professions and industries.

    This video totally reminds me of why I never wanted to become a consultant. I knew I would not be happy lugging around the baggage and hotel-hopping all the time. NOT saying it's a bad thing tho; it just doesn't suit my life style. Glad to see you're doing great! All the best.

      Grace Lung to be fair it also depends on the company culture. My one wouldn't allow for such late flights, certainly not having calls like that after flying close to midnight. Usually the day after a full working day would be only for travelling home (and sight seeing).

    I think the real reason the luggage rack is there is because you shouldn't put your bags on a hotel bed. If there are any bed bugs in that bed, you open yourself up to bringing them back to your house with you!

    I enjoyed the video, a few good spots for me:
    at 2:42, the heresy of using a mouse when you have a thinkpad's track point :)
    at 3:30, first thing to do at 7am check facebook as per your screen, yet the script said "I just did a little bit of work"
    at 6:05, swaping the "glamorous" consultant travel bag, for a recycle cloth bag to put your thinkpad.

    • @bykchoi
      @bykchoi  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      hahaha glad you enjoyed!!
      1. i can't figure out how to use the track point well!
      2. i believe that was Micosoft Teams, not facebook, but i wouldn't be surprised if it did turn out to be facebook! :P
      3. i use my travel bag for just that... travel :) otherwise i use a regular tote!

    So many toxic people in the comment sections that did not manage to get a degree and build their careers well enough to work with their brains and not hands.
    Chill, people, you don't understand how hard can it be sometimes.
    Analysts and consultants are also making your world go around because they help businesses and services grow and bring a better experience to you as well.
    TH-cam, Amazon, Netflix and so on are businesses (surprise!) that have these people on board, just to set an example.
    But hey, you don't hate it, you use it.
    The world can survive without cleaners (and other monotone and low-end jobs) as they can (and will be) replaced with automated solutions pretty soon.
    So think again before calling any role useless. Who knows, maybe that analyst you don't like just figured out how to replace you with a machine ;)

    • @englandbengal
      @englandbengal 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Daria Varha what a completely ignorant classist comment. For one thing there are many career paths that one can take without a degree. I am a professional in an industry that has been experiencing exponential growth in the energy markets, and I don’t have a degree. Others prefer to work with their hands and they often make six figures. That’s not my point though, some people cut grass, clean toilets, serve food, etc. Those people are valuable and the work they do has meaning and I’m grateful that they are taking care of those duties. You shouldn’t value someone just because of their vocation. Plenty of people are perfectly happy doing work that you most likely degrade. My own father in law worked a back breaking job in a factory, raised 4 kids, and was a great dad. He has no degree. His sister develops missiles for the military. He is way more intelligent than she is but he chose a different path and he’s one of the happiest people I know. Sure people can be toxic on here and by your comment you have joined them.

    • @dverser
      @dverser 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      EnglandBengal now take your comment and take it to literally any other tread on here. I am just making my point, to work in consulting you need a lot of brain power and experience. So when a people around here degrade this type of job - I just show them their reflection. Simple as that.
      I worked in an office and worked as a bar tender and a bike courier, not to mention other weird occupations I had. I know what manual labor is. But I feel rather sad, when people who never worked in consulting think it a waste of space.

    1st time watching. I'm sure you are well educated and it strikes me first impression that you are a great rapport builder. I'm 66 and all my extensive business travel is long behind me. Another big plus to me and impressive is that obviously your position has not gone to your head. I watched a video several weeks ago of a young woman who stated she was a consultant and it was almost sickening to see how high she was on herself.
    If you are not including specific parts of you education and projects you are involved in-that would be very interesting to me and others. Lol I know we cannot be "all things to all people" so understand if you decide to not go into detailing.
    I was never an actual consultant but was a territory manager for a major automotive hard parts supplier with global business-although I was operating in our domestic operations.
    I did attend some graduate business classes on the side that were funded by my company.
    Perhaps you already have an MBA or graduate degree in your field.
    Accumulating real-world hands on experience is key in my opinion before you embark on something like an MBA. I also prefer adjunct professors who come from real-life experiences having worked in their field. I had a professor who worked full-time as a chemical engineer with a PhD for a graduate international marketing class. He is originally from Brazil.
    He made me re-write a paper three times as he thought "I could do better." I really respected and admired him for that.
    Continued success for your career and personal life. Stay true to your core values and you will look back with little or no regrets.
