That includes me. I was in college in the 90s and thought that dead heads were losers. Wish like hell I'd bothered to see them just once instead of being stupid.
The older one gets - how true. 1972 was my first show and those just finding this... But that's every generation when the new generations discover them. Nonetheless it's warm and sad in the heart ❤
Man, I just _LOVE_ these guys playing together. Jerry had such a sincere delivery when he sang, it was honest and not manufactured. And Grisman...man what a musician. These guys are just pure magic.
@@utopianfurbiscuit man, i've been totally addicted to that album a goodwhile now. Was my first time hearin' the name 'tony rice'. Well, like Jerry, I fell down that bluegrass rabbithole. Lovin' it down here

wow. I didnt' know there were any live performances of him and Grisman. This is some of my favorite stuff. He really missed a calling as a folky. I mean, I obviously love his work with the Dead, but this stuff proves that he was the greatest rock guitarist ever. Yes, I put him past Hendrix and Clapton - MILES past them. Also, I have been playing guitar for 25 years, so I am qualified to say that. Had Jerry lived, I could see him going more in this direction. Instead of being in a huge rock band traveling to another city every night of his life... he could have settled down and done studio sessions of this sorta stuff. Think if we had Bob's Tri Studios and all its capabilities for Jerry to record and perform in. I miss you, you magnificent fat dead bastard. You were the greatest! You still are!

I've been wanting a new challenge for my guitar playing, and this has inspired me to learn Shady Grove. I've always loved this version, and now I'm so excited to start learning it.
i've recently started playlists of the different versions of favorites songs. back to back garcia, mudcrutch, etc. it's fun to enjoy the players interpretations.
Please seek out the bootleg live version by the Stray Cats, early 80s I think. Brian Setzer is playing an acoustic guitar and has the audience in the palm of his hand with Shady Grove despite a few little feedback problems; it’s incredible!!
These two felt so comfortable together. And he didn't have to be the star of the show and perform a brilliant solo on electric every song. No pressure and it shows.
Always loved acoustic music and electric also so their lives intertwine with others and they go thank you so much for letting me know what some great music and the lives that they are in, and the ones who are influenced ate basically turning you onto a new life!# bcrfulofurwishes
I only clicked on this to hear Shady Grove and when it ended, thought - what the hell could the next few minutes be? Well I think you should rename this to "Sitting Here in Limbo". Having never heard that before I was pleasantly surprised. What a lovely number!
Well... Jerry is just the man. And, things are different here in deep gap now. Just saw dawg not to long ago here. good vibes and memories. Funny thing is, We got in trouble and sent to the balcony... for dancing. Woops.
My buddy got me hooked on Grisman and Garcia in the 90's. Love the story of Jerry just wanting to jam with David at any hour. My friend always said he hated playing with the dead, his passion was bluegrass jamming. Pizza Tapes are named after jamming in the basement at all hours. Anyone here that story? Crazy Jerry is only 49 in this video. Seems like a ripened old singer of 40 years the way he delivers. RIP
jerry absolutely did not hate playing with the dead or else he would not have led it for 30 years. jerry loved his boys he just needed a breath of fresh air with something different. realistically playing the dead is what was paying his bills so it was a job to him. but he certainly did not hate it.
I also always heard that the Pizza Tapes were named that because one night when they ordered pizza, the delivery guy stole one of the recordings they had laying around and it went around in the bootleg circle and people referred to it as that. And then when they released it they just kept the name.
DAMN!! Real good. For the one who said that shady grove is forgettable, without trying to insult you, don't you think that's a little judgmental? Snobbish even? I mean I've been listening to them play that song for 20 years and I sure as hell ain't sick of it. Now I'm being judgmental. never mind.
This was right after the los Angeles riots . They played on market Street during the riots the show ended and spit us out into a full blown riot, while tripping balls.
The first place I ever heard this tune was from Quicksilver Messenger Service and I still like thier version. I never dreamed it was an Old Standard until I started poking around on the internet. Certainly this is one of the more enjoyable accoustic/traditional treatments of Shady Grove.
I was at these shows if I remember right jerry screwed up the lyrics for ripple for the encore then played it again the last night and nailed it also pulled out the banjo and panjo EPIC!!
PLEASE FOLKS - This is not the Greatful Dead, this is Grisman, Garcia and Dawgmusic. Jerry was playing folk and bluegrass long before the dead strummed one chord. I miss Jerry!
"erry was playing folk and bluegrass long before the dead " I found that out years ago when I read some book by thier "roadie". It didn't surprise me a lot though as there were some old standard tunes--like things they taught us as "folk music" in grammar school---on some of the early GD albums.
Came for Shady Grove, pleasantly surprised to get Sitting Here In Limbo as an added bonus. 😊

What a great Caribbean beat - open fire on the beach playing listening singing this 'till sunrise 😭
RIP JERRY GARCIA 🙏🏻🌹✝️🌹
yep
Grisman brought the best out in Jerry's playing. Really a thrill to hear them together.
I totally agree
Jerry was like the Bob Ross of guitar. His playing is so calming, free and sincere there are no mistakes, just happy accidents. Man I miss him.

Years after his death, I’m surprised how many people are just learning to appreciate Jerry and his genius

I was born a year after Jerry passed! So many young people love Jer and the Dead
Someone will always be learning about Jerry

Doc with David’s Shady Grove excellent too. Both are favorites.

Came to hear Shady Grove. Awesome. When Limbo started so did the tears of joy for Jerry's life.

Doc Watson does this song better in my opinion. Jerry is up there but i don't thing he beats guys like Eddie Hazel and Doc Watson.
Kevin Lang...Man He WAS a folkie..Did tons of great studio...Started out playin' banjo..Jerry was,, and did it ALL!
wrong
Kevin, didn't he used to play in folk and jug bands prior to the Dead's formation? Good post mate. Regards from North Yorkshire
Jerry hated recording in studios; traveling about with his "extended family" was what they loved.

Jerry played bluegrass before even knowing a member of the GD
Great Music, like "American beauty" by Grateful dead, one of best albums of ever...

i luv this song
Grisman Garcia was my favorite varietal of GD, it was authentic passionate driven music both men loved
You get it. Jerry would have just been happy to know that we were happy listening to his music.
Jerry spent time with his GParents in NC mountains. Brought it with him to CA. From jug band to old standards, to gospel AND most all rock infusion.
What a combo! Been to 50 Dead shows. Grisman is fabulous. Jerry and David were best buds.
