- Civil War review by Raphael Motamayor at SXSW. In theaters April 12, 2024
Civil War delivers a challenging, thrilling, heart-pounding movie about the importance of journalism in times of conflict, about how easily we become desensitized to violence when we’re living through it. Writer-director Alex Garland gives the story the scope and visual style of a massive summer blockbuster, but keeps the focus on the journey the characters take and how war affects them.

Ah..yes

A lot of people are going to project their own political ideas/fantasies onto this movie and not actually review it in an unbiased way.
Oh they are already doing that, especially on Facebook.
The show will undoubtedly demonize the right, let’s quit pretending- this is Hollywood people.
Which is probably the intention to show everyone their pointless worldviews. Except US-Americans won't get it.
Talking apolitically about a movie that is about a civil war? How do you do that if youre not flat out ignoring most of the situation? Civil war is one of thr most political situations and ignoring that is kinda weird and pointless. It would be like reviewing musicals and never mentioning music.
@@Oksa_L it's still a movie, with filmmaking, acting and musical scoring. Alex Garland's artistry could get lost in the politics. By the way, while we're being political, the conservatives want a civil war, because they're the ones with guns and the attitude that they're the true patriots. They're wrong

In a real civil war there would be more factions as well as foreign military involvement.
No foreign military with a brain would intervene in a modern US civil war.
The capability and cost of force projection is beyond all of Europe and China. 80% of their troops would be at the bottom of the Pacific and Atlantic before they got within 1000 miles of our coast. Mexico and South America can't even control their own territories. Canada would be best served by simply sitting on the sidelines.
More factions yeah, foreign military nah except for like one or two experimental expeditionary or advisor forces at best and that's still a big if. This country is geographically impossible to conquer from the outside and probably inside too and we're surrounded by ocean and significantly weaker countries.
Honestly if/when we do break apart Canada and Mexico might not exist for very long afterwards, the amount of refugees alone would cripple both their economies multiple times over and their defense capabilities are like a fraction of a fraction of ours, so whatever major factions exist would easily be able to solo them if they need more territory
@@krystalneko4094If one of the factions "invites" a foreign power say, China well that's plausible. The Chinese would do (as you said) perform an advisory role ORRRRRR theybwould actively participate in direct action agianst some of the other factions.
To me, there will not be a ACW 2.0.
@@krystalneko4094the Federal Government would lean on Mossad HARD to help out with intelligence gathering if there was ever a mass secession movement.
There would be no foreign military. Trust me every other nation wants to see us tear each other apart.

That's not necessarily the reason for the war though, but rather a consequence of it, perhaps?

Why are all of you so bloodthirsty?
@@_Cetarial making a statement of fact is hardly bloodthirsty. Have you seen how divided this country is? Do you honestly think the conservatives and leftist/communists of this country are ever going to coexist with each other? No, one side will push the other into a corner, and violence will ensue. That's just the natural course of mankind.

Can we all just stop long enough to recognize the irony in ones ability to look at the current sociopolitical landscape, just to turn around and exploit it for financial gain being probably the most American thing one could ever do?
Your not wrong
Can we all just stop long enough to realize that this is a review of, not a movie, but a movie TRAILER because they know people will click on it and generate financial gains. Is that not the most American thing one could ever do?
Also, when speaking of people doing inane things for money you could look to many countries outside of America where money is far more precious. Money is thrown away in the USA because even our poor aren't truly poor.
While also apparently not having the backbone to actually acknowledge said sociopolitical climate head on

@@unprofessionallyamateur6354I think we should see the film for ourselves before judging. Sometimes it’s best for a film to focus on the ground level experience of its characters instead of getting bogged down in politics. From dialogues it is implied
- Third term president
- GAS $300 half tank and people prefer foreign currency instead of USD
- Civilians bombed by air strikes
- Antifa got 'massacred'
- Local groups gaining power (Boogaloo boys won fights in the movie)
They also said POTUS eliminated the FBI.
You are mistaken on multiple points.
We don't know whether Antifa was massacred, or the committed the massacre.
Gas was $300 in the middle of a war zone where almost certainly digital transactions would have broken down and one faction's tender would not be accepted by the other faction, meaning converting from one currency to the other would be very expensive.
Civilians being bombed by air strikes happened after the war broke out.
Sub factions would have not caused the war, but been a by-product. Only the 3 major factions would have been integral to the outbreak of civil war.
All of those reasons could have happened after the war started also

Makes you wonder if American history will eventually fall into the pattern laid out at the start of Three Kingdoms: the realm, long divided, must unite; and long united, must divide.
More like Rome. The democracy will slowly crumble under increasing corruption. A charismatic leader will sieze control , be assassinated by the statuss quo, a civil war will break out. Eventually a strong and ruthless leader will take control. However his inheritors of power will be successively worse. Leading to more war and conflict and eventual fragmentation.
This country atm seems like Rep Dem and Hard Right
Nah, we got our Canadian brothers in the north and our Mexican bros in the south to vibe check us. Plus unlike China, America does not have nation wide farmers or a conscription system to keep the population of the people up to such extent. Much like the aftermath of the American civil war and after slave farming plantations were dissolved, albeit slowly and not ideally the losers and ex-confederates who wanted to keep their practice up just left for another environment that allowed them to continue living a lifestyle which suited them such as Brazil and many other places in Latin America

Lol, a movie about US journalists accurately reporting on the state of the Union. So it’s a sci fi movie?
You got that right! 😂🤣
To be fair, most journalists do a great job reporting on what is going on. Most big Media companies don't employee journalists. Most of them either do news hours (fluff) and punditry (opinion as fact). And as a result people confuse real journalism working for small news papers and self employed digital media outlets, with legacy Medias slide into narratives to shape opinion.
Where does it say they are Fox News reporters?
@@patangman2117 To be fair, most journalists do a great job of reporting what their CIA handlers tell them to say.

Does Robert Evans get a cameo?
Nice one. Who doesn't get the reference, google "Behind the bastards Robert Evans". Also he wrote stories about a civil war.
Does the Blue Apron Island make a cameo?
Quite a contradiction in the movie, when said it celebrates the work journalism does, but it was journalism that would be the driving force of any Civil War that could happen.
"...the driving force of any Civil War ..." is pretty much the type large stupidity of the HUMAN MALE brohim; it certainly wasn't 'journalism' that ignited the opening strains of the HOT american civil war (which never ended btw, it just became a COLD war. you DO understand the difference between a COLD & a HOT war right?)
Calling far right proto facist pundits like Faux News, Newsmaxx or Alex Jones and the like "journalism" is really pushing it ;)
The civil war started after GTA6/Elder Scrolls 6 came out and were disappointing titles filled with microtransactions.

The opening commentary to this review is crazy. You're telling me this faction-based movie's biggest flaw is that it's not an accurate depiction of what you see on the news?
March 2024 this is a drama, November 2024, it could be a documentary.

Revolution, yes, civil war no.
They lost me when they think california and texas would join forces.
Thats the beauty reviewer is talking about .. to think of such dire scenarios where two such opposite states decided to join forces
Sh@!t happened; maybe Republican took over California!
It's totally feasible. A demagogue a la DT gets elected for a second term, then, unconstitutionaly runs for a third term rigging the election for him to win. California is pissed because a right wing demagogue gets a third term and screams, "this is is unconstitutional" and secedes. Then, Texas being a staunch unconditional supporter of the 2nd Ammendment, recognizes the tyrranical nature of this third term president, urges its citizens to raise arms against said government and unites with California to overthrow this tyrranical president. "The enemy of my enemy is my friend."

What the civil war film taught me is that independent journalism is needed. If you have a smartphone or a google phone, you can Chromecast the war and take pics and livestream the event. This will show the entire world on Chromecast and on youtube. Camera's are essential and needed as well. And be grateful for having a smartphone.
Ws aren't going to have cell service during a genuine Civil War. These things will be bricks.
If the cause of the conflict is never addressed that itself weakens the message about journalism. How and why was it allowed to reach this point? what was the trigger issue? was it a single issue or multiple? Without addressing the cause the message just becomes a bland one we hear over and over without any meaning behind it. "War is bad" without knowing why the war even started. Is any side in the right or is it just a blood sport for fun?
The cause isn't the subject of the movie. Intentionally.
You can safely assume that there was a lot of journalism covering that exact topic when it broke out, but some journalists have to cover different things. We follow journalists who'se not trying to figure out the cause, and we, the audience, can safely assume that the reason is known to them, and unimportant for the film.
Its justifiable though, since the angle this movie takes is that of common people and not the ruler and most people during such turbulent era tend to only have scarce info of the wider conflict.

Still having trouble understanding the concept of different reviewers having different opinions?
@@veraseb That's just a bad way of "Scoring". If different reviewers judge a movie by different standards every time then where is the consistency of the rating? There is none. So in the end it doesn't matter what score it gets. IMO they should ditch the score and just say "in my opinion". If they wish to assign a number then judge things by the same standard.
