    Hey Daniel, just one thing you can improve in the break away sistem. The bungee! it’s better to have a shorter one (I use Omer, short, strong and cheap). The reason for this is just to get the point where you atach your floatline as close to the triger as possible, your gun will be more stable and improve accuracy, specially if you are fishing deep and the floatline is quite vertical.

    I suggest that while rigging a reel add a pigtail swivel between the reel line and monofilament. Just incase you need to pull the spear through the other end, of a small hole in the coral or cave system, to disconnect the line other than cutting it.

    • @DanielMann
      @DanielMann  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I use a bowline, it is easy to undo and even if I have to cut it not having the weight of the swivel is more benefit to me. I always find they sink and get stuck on the bottom.

  • @AmmerSlammer
    @AmmerSlammer 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    The best video I have seen on the subject! Thanks. One question, if using a reel can you skip the monofilament and go straight from the reel to the spear?

    • @DanielMann
      @DanielMann  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks. Yes you can, but when you damage the line near the spear from fish you’ll need to cut it back. Eventually you’ll end up with a very short reel line and it has to be replaced.

  • @darthvaider4347
    @darthvaider4347 ปีที่แล้ว

    if rigging speargun with a reel should I use single or double wrap if mono? I understand that with single wrap I'll have to reel the line after every shot and double wrap should give a longer slack.

  • @mikelfernandezgomez1666
    @mikelfernandezgomez1666 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great video! But just a quick note, lack of bungee (if not using a reel) can easily lead to too much tension on the line release, which is known to ruin the break point of some mechs (you lose accuracy).
    TIP: I use a home made bungee that attaches to the loop in the mono with a quick knot. If the rubber snaps, i can cut the dyneema to shorten, redo the quick knot and I am ready to go in 1 minute!

    • @DanielMann
      @DanielMann  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you rig it incorrectly of course, but this method shows how to have the perfect tension in the line. However I have seen some mechanisms that are worse than others when it comes to the excess tension.

  • @robdubois3844
    @robdubois3844 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Daniel, you mentioned it's 1.8mm mono so you use a 2.1mm crimp. Why do you use 2.1mm crimps instead of 1.9mm crimps? Is there a specific reason?

  • @alexharalambiev2873
    @alexharalambiev2873 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nice video as usual but IMO if you're using single wrap without a reel, you MUST also put a bungee. Otherwise you risk the shaft coming back at you after the shot, or just losing the shaft if the pull is too strong. I have personally lost a shaft this way, because the crimp gave way after the shot even though it was properly crimped.

    Hi Daniel. Great Video! very informative, especially for someone that would consider themselves a beginner. I do have a question. I live in San Diego where we dive from the shore as well as blue water hunting. In lieu of having two seperate speargun set ups with a reel and breakaway.... is there a best practice to rig your speargun where you can easily swap the reel out for the floatline/break away set up!? this would help me quickly set up my gear and not constantly keep rigging up my speargun depending on the dive the next day.

    I rig spearguns for a few of the local guys here in Virginia Beach. I've been using the snap clip muzzle. There's a guy that says the mono is slipping off the snap clip muzzle bungee not sure how this is possible. He found his shaft at the bottom with mono attached in good condition. How is it possible it could slip off the snap swivel clip if the clip is closed?

    • @DanielMann
      @DanielMann  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Shark/tuna clips can let mono loops go if the loop is too big. Rob Allen did a video on this recently.

  • @folsberg
    @folsberg 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Curious to know how you get your spear free from your catch once landed when you dont use a clip at the end of the line. Surely you can't expect to always be able to pull it back out through the entry hole? I always use a shark clip to be able to quickly disengage the spear and line from my catch once it is secure to my stringer. Then pull it all through the fish and reattach to my gun

    • @DanielMann
      @DanielMann  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Lars! The bowline is really easy to untie so in the event I need to take the spear line from the reel line it’s not a problem. To be honest though the only fish I’ve had to do that on in recent times is for a halibut. If you look for a video entitled ‘My brother schools me spearfishing’ you will see the method I use to get the spear back out of the fish really easily which is what I do 99% of the time.
