    Floki IS NOT a made up character. He's real and full name was Hrafna-Flóki Vilgerðarson. He is known as the first Norseman who deliberately set sail to the island we know as Iceland today. That being said, Floki was the third Viking explorer to sail there and the one before him, Garðar Svavarsson also knew where he was headed.

    • @RayB1656
      @RayB1656 3 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Floki Vilgerdarson settled in Iceland with his family, wife and daughters !
      It said that one of his daughter perished, possibly at sea .
      Because of the harsh winter conditions,
      Floki came back to Norway after one year.
      However, he must have returned later,
      since he died in Iceland !
      The Icelandic Sagas mentioned that ''Iceland'' was ''discovered '' by the Irish ( monks ? )
      and Papar, before Svavarsson !
      Difficult to know if these events, pre-Svavarsson are true !

    • @alexbowman7582
      @alexbowman7582 ปีที่แล้ว

      When they arrived in Iceland there were Irish monk living there. Iceland, and the Americas, offered subsistence living, whereas a warrior going to England or the Middle East could potentially become wealthy.

    In my opinion, each of Ragnar's sons were made to embody one major aspect of his personality. Ivar is Ragnar's wit, which always came with him being ruthless as it was the part of him that made him a great conquerer. Sigurd was the embodiment of his sympathy, a trait that made Ragnar quite bad at conquering, but a great father, lover, and family member (this could be why Sigurd and Ivar never got along, since Ragnar's wit and desire for conquering interfered with his sense of sympathy all the time). Ubbe is the embodiment of his sense of justice, which is what made Ragnar a great ruler. Hvitserk is the embodiment of his pursuit of the truth. More specifically, Ragnar's struggle with his religion and moral code. And finally, Bjorn is the embodiment of his bravery, which is what made Ragnar a great fighter. Hope you guys like this interpretation. And please give it a thumbs up if you do. Been thinking about it for some time now.

    I used to love this show, but when Ragnar died I lost all interest and quit watching. Also, according to what i read, he married Lagertha 3 different times; I was grossly disappointed in the show for keeping the Auslaug character as his wife and not reflecting the 2nd and 3rd marriages to Lagertha. Auslaug was, IMO, a terrible character, boring, unnecessary and irritating. They butchered history enough times they could have done so again to bring Lagertha and Ragnar back together. The show would have been so much better that way :(

    There is one other theory about Ivar the Boneless. Vikings were known to give Ironic names. Like calling a really big guy "tiny", or a really fat guy "slim" A viking grave was uncovered in England several years ago. It was a massive grave. Filled with lots of treasure and dead slaves but the viking inside was far from boneless. In fact he was huge. They are not sure that this was Ivar but the time and location of burial fits with Ivar and it's hard to imagine there were that many other vikings of the day that would warrant such a fine send off.

      Ivar ( Ivarr Ragnarsson ) died in Dublin, Ireland around the year 870 or 873 ,
      since nothing is heard about Ivarr after this date !
      It is said that he died from a sudden illness , fever and infection.
      Probably dysentery !
      And probably in his bed.
      He was often called a ''berserker'' in Dublin !
      He was certainly not a '''crippled'' Viking Warlord, since the Icelandic Sagas mentioned
      that as a young man he had the strength of 7 men
      and he was fast and agile, like a ''snake '' !

    Interesting how they kinda got both of Ragnar's causes of death in there. They did have him fall gravely ill during the seize on Paris, even faking his own death and then leaving it unsure if he'd make it at the end of the season. This could actually explain why some would go away thinking he'd died. Then of course he comes back and has his more dramatic death later in England. Very clever how they do their best to combine all the myths.

If he had been like 20 in 845, he would have been around 110 years old. Also, the series start in 793 with the raid on Lindisfarne, making Regnar around 70 when raiding Paris and Rollo would be an immortal elf ;-) The series did indeed state that in order to tell the entire story of the Vikings, they had to cut corners and compress 200 years into less than 40.

      Maybe Ivar lost a limb in combat like Thorstein and had to play more of a commanding role as he is a form of Viking nobility being a semi legendary son of Ragnar during the age of the Great heathen army?
      Old societies still made nepostism a thing. So Ivar probably was very agile for a large warrior, or he was strategically very agile and cunning which is noted or he had lost limbs in combat before.

      where most of the shown' events were quite fictitious.
      As for the real historic characters ,
      your guess would be as good as mine.
      Since these 8th/9th centuries stories were written about 400 years later,
      by clerics, difficult to know exactly what really happened.
      For example to story of Ironside, there are two versions;
      1. after his defeat by the Saracens at Gibraltar, he escaped to Sweden..
      2. after his defeat, he died near a coast, nearby Frisa ...
      Which one is the true story ?
      Ragnarr and Bjorn were common names during that period,
      probably the stories of many, were combined into one !?!
      Yet, possibly, some Danes, Swedes, Norwegians do have
      some knowledge about the ancestors... giving them a possible
      connection with the past.
      No quarrels here !

      Mr Zeee you're a nice liberal muslim, i don;t question that. The problem is, that your muslim new commers are far from being liberal. They are the cause to all this hate and fear that is being spread right now because of their diabolic unhuman acts ! Lack of respect and appreciation for the people that rescue them from the poverty of their shitty countries (that are shitty, by the way, thanks to radical islam which is nowadays islam that burnt all the sience and knowladge the arab nations once achieved).
      Modern Islam is a disease.

      The most "authentic" way to pronounce them would be like in modern Icelandic which is still pretty close to Old Norse. And here there are for example two early forms of th (ð and þ) that dont even get used in the show nor any modern Scandinavian languages as far as i know, the r is rolled pretty heavily, almost closer to some spanish accents then most modern European tongues, theres many ä,ö,ü sounds and so on.

    Ivar's name is well known. His actual name is really translated to "loose bones" and not boneless. The bones refered to being his legs, because he traveled the world and conquered far outside the north .

    *Unpopular Opinion:*
    Season 4 Ragnar was great and the best Character development his acting got better and peaked everyone else......The Character was at his lowest but that's because they had to worsen him so the sons could rise. And that was the best Character development in the show which shows what power and such responsibilities can do to a man along with greed and Betrayal.
