How To Make $7 Press-On Nails Last Over a Month

  • I discovered press-ons when I was sick of my nail polishing chipping and looking for something more durable. I didn't try them for the longest time because I thought they were a joke. The Impress Nails box says they last for 2 weeks but I regularly get 4+ weeks of wear with just a few steps.
    I get them from CVS, Walgreens, or any drug store, but they're available online too (for $7!): amzn.to/3bohtv8

    I love press-ons, they are so much healthier than any other nail enhancements like gel, dip or acrylic. However, as a nail tech, I don’t recommend pushing anything under your cuticles. Any nail treatment or service should never be painful, even if just for a day. If you push too far or knick yourself without realizing, you’re leaving that area exposed, with the dirt that will inevitably stick to the press on tape, there’s a potential risk of infection. Just my humble opinion, great video otherwise.

    I somehow came across this video and I have to say "OUCH!!!! NO WAY!!!. Having been a nail tech for 25+ years, I have to say that shoving the fake nail under the cuticle line is a really bad idea. It hurts and is uncomfortable for a reason! The matrix of your nail is under there, you can see the edge of it as the half moon on your nail. If you damage that, you've damaged your nail for life. I can not recommend what she's doing in this video. I see many comments below about how using glue makes them just pop off fast, which is true. If you want a press on nail to last, use builder gel, poly gel or even a soak off gel to attach them to your nails. Clear, full cover tips (they have to be clear or close to it or the gel to cure) are all over out there and you can use those and just decorate them yourself. You can also fill them in as they grow out instead of shoving them up to your first knuckle and being in pain for a week. There are a ton of DIY Apres' dupe nails showing how to do this and yes, you might have to buy a small LED lamp but they aren't that expensive any more if you pick on up on E-Bay or Aliexpress, you can actually get everything that you'd need to use. This video, especially the shoving the nail under the cuticle edge is totally wrong. Some of you may disagree and that's fine, they are your nails, do with them what you please but honestly, shoving a plastic nail under and into your nail matrix is not good. That's why it hurts.

    Besides the way she pushed the fake nails under her cuticle, you also shouldn't put fake nails on right after taking a shower. Your nail plate absorbs a lot of water, and should be given a chance to evaporate out the water before covering it in plastic.

    My press-ons stay on for more than 2 weeks and I definitely do NOT have to do that kind of damage to my cuticles to get that kind of performance. Every nail tech I've ever met has said that pushing cuticles back that far is bad: It opens you up to infection, and even when it's just irritated it looks bad.

    I started using a base gel polish instead of nail glue to attach them and it seals the edges better and cover with a topcoat which keeps out moisture and lifting. You wouldn’t want them placed too close to the cuticle just to get that seal. You could file around the base lightly to blend the nail, if it’s not an already designed nail.

    I love the "imPRESS" sticky nails, but even they will pop off pretty soon. I would usually have one or two that would pop off within a day. I started lightly filing the top of each nail after doing the steps you showed, but I also bought some glue at the Family Dollar store. It's the strongest glue I've ever used and it's cheap. It's from LA Colors. I apply a thin layer over the nail, put the fingernail on, then press/hold for about 15-20 seconds. This allows the glue from the nail to stick to the super strong regular glue and it's about 2 weeks before I notice any become loose and usually, only 2 or 3 become loose. They still don't fall off. I can then add a small amount of glue where it's loose and press them back on.

The lady in the video is not telling you to push the nail under the cuticle and then tap the end with a hammer...just under the edge a little, not until you scream or draw blood, ok?

    I like the press-ons too but I did find that after wearing them for a while they did damage my nails. I switched back to occasionally wear polish and save the press-ons for special events. They are much better than the damage of acrylic nails though. Also I found as they start lifting my hair gets caught under the side edges of the nails (when I am blow drying or washing my hair).

    I have been doing my own nails, using store bought press ons since I was old enough to use the glue lol. Manufacturers have come a long way since then and I love all the new stuff. HOWEVER the IMPRESS nails are NOT meant to be a nail extension. The material is MUCH softer than the normal KISS nails. This particular product is meant to cover your natural nail imitating a gel manicure. This is why after a few weeks your nails looked so bad and curved.

    Press ons are the best! Back in the day they sucked and looked so fake. They have come a long way and much improved. After a year of trial and error, this video confirms what I finally figured out. At first, I tried super glue to keep them on, after a few sets, it destroyed my nail bed and cuticles. But I wasn’t going give up just yet. I took my time and did these steps last week and so far so good just with the stickers🤞🏼 I get a lot of compliments on my nails, because they look salon quality. I’m able to keep them fresh looking every 2-3wks. Love that I can change it up at home or even traveling …pretty much anywhere anytime at my own convenience. Hi, really nice video. I was on the fence for the longest time because in the package, the nails didn't look like they'd fit. But, I tried a box and was hooked. It's been a couple of years and rarely am I not wearing a set. Along with the ImPress, Dashing Diva makes nice press ons too although I do prefer the ImPress. Prep work is key although for me, I am not a fan of pushing back your cuticles. Instead, I still push the nail slightly under the cuticle and yeah, they really do look salon professional. I use a glass file because it's kinder to the edges of my nails when filing. Also, after I use the alcohol rub and my nails are dry, I lightly buff them with a light grit buffing block, then press each nail a full minute. It really helps the adhesive stick. Also do them at night before bed without getting my hands wet for about 8 hours. I can get 3 weeks but tend to switch them out after 2 and I usually wait 24 hrs before applying a new set.

    • @CrystalClues
      @CrystalClues  4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Hi Jilly - oooh I'll have to check out Dashing Diva. Good point on pushing the nail slightly under the cuticle. That's probably sufficient and won't hurt. I have a glass file that has lasted me a long time. More sustainable too. Pressing each nail a full minute is actually a good idea - I haven't tried that but I will! And good call on doing it before bed so that the tape can really stick and set. What length do you usually go for?

    • @jillyfae4895
      @jillyfae4895 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@CrystalClues Hi again, I have tried the newer medium length, but find they really are too long for daily activities, so I tend to go for the short which looks lovely and has a salon look to them. I do have several spare boxes of the medium and I wonder if the sides could be cut so the nail could be a ballerina or coffin shape. I will try that for the next set and let you know. I made the cuticle comment because I think what so many forget is the part of the nail where the cuticle is alive and growing, so over time, pushing back and or even cutting the cuticles could not only harm the skin and nail, but cause infection. Btw, really enjoying your channel. :)

    • @CrystalClues
      @CrystalClues  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Jilly I usually wear medium too but the short sounds like the most long lasting because the edge is less likely to get caught on something. You have a strong point on not hurting the cuticles because you’re SO right, over time it can really affect how it grows... I’ll be honest I didn’t think about that so thanks for bringing that up Jilly. I tend to alternate between glue, bare nails, and the press ons. Do you use polish anymore or are you mostly done with that? Haha

    • @jillyfae4895
      @jillyfae4895 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@CrystalClues I don't wear medium as often, and the short are more long lasting. I type, do dishes, laundry etc, just don't put pressure on the tips, like open can tabs or open boxes.
      I do prefer the short length because without pushing your cuticles back, the nails even fitted in are long enough. I haven't used glue in over a year because it did damage my nails. Press on with adhesives....bare nails only to let them breathe a day or two. Otherwise ImPress or Dashing Diva only. If I am wearing a French manicure set I will use colored polish just on the white tip for something different.

Also just like she did wipe your nails with alcohol but also buff/file your nail bed with a nail fine to make it rough and remove any shine. "The line of crud" is your cuticle on your nail bed and you should not sea saw your natural nails with a nail file. You should file one way only. It allows water in as you break the seal of the nail and causes jazzed edges where the water is then absorbed and when it dries causes lifting and chipping like with chipboard.

    I first heard about fake press on nails after walking past the beauty aisle in Walmart and I immediately wanted the pack. After getting some packs of nails for Christmas and my birthday I tried them on and realized that they aren't the best option. First of all figuring out what size to put on each finger can be very difficult especially if you have a small nail bed. Then you're never guaranteed that the glue has been applied well to the back of the nail so you don't know how long it will stay on. The first time I used the press on nails for my birthday the glue was very well applied and the nails stayed on for over 3 weeks. But the next time they peeled off the moment I applied them and I couldn't get them to stick. I really think that it's not worth it if you know how to paint your nails with nail polish. If you apply oil to your nails, buff them, don't bite them, then your nail should grow pretty long in about 1 - 2 months. Overall I think the press on nail thing is okay but it can be pretty challenging sometimes and you don't know if they will stay on well or not. It depends if you get lucky or not 😔

    2 things: 1. Do not push a foreign object up under your cuticle. That is unsafe, and you’re just asking to damage your nail matrix. Damaging the matrix can lead to rough and abnormal nail growth for the rest of your life. 2. Do not keep nails like this on for a month. She told you that crud can get between the nails. Washing your hands will put water between the nails that can’t dry. You know who LOVES warm, moist areas? FUNGI and MOLD. Unless you want to end up with a case of onychomycosis that will cause your nail to thicken and turn yellow and possibly fall off, do not keep these on for more than a week or so.

    I add a thin line of glue around the stick thing, then a tiny dot in the middle of the nail, right before applying. I never dug it into my cuticle. My press ones lasted weeks, with 5 kids, young children in baths.. dishes, no dish washer.. all that stuff. I only had to repair two, but they stuck through till the end.
