Wow, I had a friend ask me about fixing his SP hinge literally less than a minute before I saw this video was in my sub box and you uploaded it 3 minutes ago. Crazy man.
Thank you very much for this useful video! I bought a new case for my GBA SP and realized that my caps don't fit with the hinges. Now I know why. You saved me from buying overpriced caps.
Sorry for the English, i have reshelled my gba sp and when i open it click and block at the finish part, now if i want to reassemble the hinges in the right way with the screen open, how i have to remove them? It’s different if i remove them With the screen closed or open?
First, you are a godsend. Thank you for this information - there isn't enough of it out there. Second, does anyone know why my reshelled SP hyper extends when opening? It completely goes passed the sweet spot and clicks when its completely straight up.
You might’ve installed the hinges when the case is closed. You’re supposed to put them in halfway, then open it up, and push them in the rest of the way.
I figure that the bad OEM hinges that seize up are probably from being forced out while in the wrong position, then installed while in the correct position (open to the same angle as the detent should be), but the hinge is already wound past the detent. Perhaps that can be fixed by finding a way to wind them back before inserting them. The issue is that pliers and such will mangle the plastic slots but, well, you and I have 3D printers. ;)
@@makho Hmm... If they can do a complete 360⁰ then I don't see why there is a left hinge and a right hinge. Maybe there's nothing stopping them from doing a 360⁰ but the spring still gets coiled or uncoiled when you do? I'd really like to dissect one to see how they work. :) My guess is that turning beyond the detent in either direction makes the two halves pull apart slightly until they rotate enough to slot back in to their detents when the two halves contract back together, but that would require a different kind of spring that doesn't coil/uncoil when turning and would need to be pretty strong to be contained in such a tiny hinge and still be able to tension the screen without axial tension.
In my experience, I've encountered two distinct types of aftermarket opaque cases: those of lower quality, typically available on AliExpress under the 'JCD' label. These cases often feature uneven cuts, poorly crafted sound apertures, a texture reminiscent of amateur spray painting, and a lack of proper fitting between components. Conversely, there are higher-quality alternatives, exemplified by one I acquired from eBay. In this case, the sound apertures were precisely aligned, the cuts were clean, the pieces fit snugly, and the overall tactile experience was satisfying. However, it appears that such superior options may be exclusively found on eBay, though I cannot confirm this definitively.
Hi, just find out something! I have a GBA SP with two WHITE hinges and they are both working properly, NO left/right color differences. BUT if you make a half rotation of the hinge (let' say the LEFT one) by hand when disassembled and put it back in the same position it does not work in a proper way anymore, it is more loose. The reason is that with that half rotation, the left-hand hinge has become a right-hand hinge. Please check it
Same. The cat mewed in my right headphone so clearly, I looked to my right to see where it was and how it got in my house. XD I then remembered Makho has a cat. His microphone picks up so much.
The oddest thing was, I was very sure it was his cat but, I've had a stray cat coming around my house lately. I thought I had left the door open or something. Lmao.
I didn’t realize that there was a left and right hinge when I was reshelling my SP. I was able to put the hinges without any issues, but if I did it wrong, what is a dead give away that I have to place reopen the SP and fix it?
if your hinge doesn't click open or closed in the proper places. If it doesn't stay closed upside-down when you hold only the bottom and try to let gravity open it.
Hey so I just put my sp back together and my hinges are in the wrong position, I didn’t mean too but I accidentally did. They do that thing where it doesn’t click when you shut it, anyway I am gonna get around to repairing it at some point but does having them in the wrong orientation harm them? Like if I leave them like that is it going to break my sp or the hinges?
@@makho Hmm... I'll keep messing around with it then. I tried 3 different pairs of the 10 that I ordered and got the same result. I had the same thing happen with another re-shell and was able to correct it. I'm not sure what I did, though.
so.. my oem hinges are both white. I also forced them out while closed so theyre in the wrong position while trying to put them in the correct way. dont know what to do here
there should be a channel going down both sides of the hinge. If the channel on the two parts is not aligned for insertion, you'll have to find a way to rotate the hinge before you can insert it.
I bought 2 aftermarket hinges, and they won't fit into the hinge caps that came with my shell. I tried looking for caps online that would work with aftermarket hinges, but I couldn't find any. Do you know of any places where I can get some?
The caps alone? No, I don't. You'd have to modify the caps you have or pick up some salvaged OEM hinges. I heard that someone in China is trying to get OEM compatible hinges made but I have yet to hear anything else about that.

@@makho this is what i did :0 i place my oem hinges black left and white right (as i said). But i dont know why it dont snaps when its closing and it snaps to far when its open :/ Becaus i have a clear shell, i can see whats going on. When i open my SP, both parts of the hinges snaps together, so the key snaps into the groove (but the Screen goes to far, as i said). But when i closing it, the key stops a little bit before it arrives the groove. So you can be right if you say i have to try it in the opposite sides, but if this is right, it is really strange that my oem hinges are white left and black right, isnt it? And the hinges came out of my original SP, i dont bought them, but i cant remeber how they came out of the Gameboy :/
rgrs has those newer metal interior aftermarket black hinges that work pretty decent. You'd have to modify the hinge caps if you want to use OEM or transparent caps though. Otherwise, you can still buy salvage hinges from sellers on aliexpress and taobao but YMMV and I'd highly recommend getting a small baggy full so you can sort out the junk ones yourself since they seem to be hit and miss.
