    I really appreciate the honesty and lack of ego. It's so refreshing seeing someone make a mistake and overcoming it on TH-cam instead of just always being perfect.

    The secret of perfect paintwork is to never rely on next stage to "make things better".get every stage as good as u can.basicallt,if u can feel it,u will see it.i use guide coats on filler and primer now,as my eyesight is failing.u might have found it easier to use 2k basecoat and lacquer.youve done ok though.

    Sam, cellulose is not as forgiving for the filling, puttying, it shows rings if not prepared properly. You probably had the gun to close and applied heavy coats. Should have left the vehicle masked, taken out the sags, primed puttied and repainted those sections. Were you using an old SATA spray gun? Or was it a clone. Not really a gun for a beginner. Puts material on like a hose. Even though I have 10 of them. Anyway, at least you are honest enough to show the error of your ways and you learnt by your mistakes. We all have had sags at one time or another. But sags near an edge or moulding are the worst to remove. It will burn through, regardless of what you do. And please tack the floor with sapy water. Well done anyway and keep safe.

    Fair play for giving it a go mate!! people are quick to point out the bads but at least you have it ago and can rectify your mistakes next time !!

    Sam you need to block sand the filler and use track cloth to remove the dust after you panel wipe...apart from that great work.

    It’s fantastic you’ve shown us all the snags and difficulties. It reassures us these kind of troubles are are part of the course when you try to have a go a doing something yourself. It’s all too easy to just stump up the cash and get a professional to do it, but how much you must of learnt on this job is probably worth the value of paying someone to do it for.
    As a w123 coupe owner in Derbyshire, hopefully I’ll see your car about on the road!

    Enjoyed your video very much. I had 3 of them back in the 00s, first one a 200 then bought one for spares, then sold them and bought a beautiful 230E which after a few years I fitted 2 new inner wings and plated the drivers foot well/ bulk head area. I then bought a 240 diesel engine and box and converted the 230E to a 240D even down to replacing the celophane strip in the dash so I could get the glow plug light. Ran it on red diesel for a few years. Vacuum central locking system a pita.

    The main problem you´ve had was that there was too much dust in the air, since the paint gun runs on pressure there is always a slight gust of wind when painting which naturally kicks up any surrounding dust, what you need is a sealed chamber of sorts with AC for painting, I reckon that problem should not be of importance anymore.
    other than that great work and keep it up, greetings from germany.

    These paint runs remind me of a video a chap called the gunman made a while back where to save time completely stripping the panel with runs he uses body filler to protect the surrounding good painted area and knocks back the runs until they’re flat again and then polished the rest out just fine. Apparently an old school trick he was once shown and he decided to try one day when the apprentice had this problem 💪

    “60-40 thinner to cellulose paint gives me the gloss level I want” - WRONG - the thinner is merely a vehicle used to adjust the viscosity of the cellulose so that it can be sprayed onto the substrate, then it evaporates into the atmosphere, leaving the finish cellulose. Cellulose by its chemical composition dries by solvent evaporation and then the gloss level reduces which is reinstated by polishing with a cutting compound.

    • @Manc-king
      @Manc-king 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      His whole problem was using cellulose. Solvent base coat and 2k base coat all day long

    @mykswappedescortmk2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Oh where to start on this one 😅. Full points for having a go but obviously painting isn’t easy and you eluded to TH-cam tutorials that can often make it look like it is. Putting the paint on is the least amount of the effort but as soon as you start to put paint on and see it’s not right you should stop. Always be prepared to start over when it comes to bodywork repairs because if it goes bad you may as well start over at the earliest opportunity rather than carry on and make it harder in the long run. Filler work requires patience and you really need a guide coat to check its flat because your eyes won’t see it until it’s too late. Not too sure what you take away from this one but you did mention you want to do it again in the future….. DON’T!! 😂. Pay someone to do it properly if you want it to look right.

    You have had no training in what you are doing. You are clearly just “having a go”
    The thing is. If your willing to put the time in to tackle painting such a lovely old mercedes. Why skip the learning phase!
    It shows no logic in what your doing!
    Your clearly well educated and seem to have enough money to either pay for training! Or to buy some dedicated video tutorials on how to prep & paint! If these steps had been taken by you! Then you wouldn’t need to re do the work! Thus time & money wasted and people like me having lack of respect due to your lazy un planned approach! Would not be! And like other channels you’d have more followers
    To be honest it’s a bit of a poke in the eye for the guy who plans, educates, and puts attention to detail to their work for their channel videos.
    Please take this as positive criticism. And have a bit more of a pragmatic, philosophical approach to your work! You will be rewarded with satisfaction I guarantee you!!
    Great car though bud and a kind of ok finish in the end!!

    • @samsdetailinguk
      @samsdetailinguk  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah I understand where you’re coming from but I did do alot of research into painting beforehand. I do believe no amount of research would have yielded different results. After speaking with some body shop folks the common theme was simply a lack of experience. It takes a lot of experience into perfecting application of body filler and getting it bang on. As an absolute perfectionist I wasn’t happy, in reality is it really that bad? Not really, it now doesn’t have holes in the arches and the boot floor isn’t falling off.

      Can you put cellulose on top of 2k primer?

    • @robertreavley7145
      @robertreavley7145 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@samsdetailinguk yup! Your best off using a 2K top coat to! That solid red won’t need a top,clear coat. The beauty of 2k is you use no cellulose thinners in the mix! Just add the hardener. This paint is better suited to flow out better. As it take longer to set once sprayed on. Giving you better control for the paint to flow out. ALWAYS leave 20 minutes between coats! Not so much the primer but the topcoat! You get much better quality and a stronger paint coverage. enabling you to wet sand within 24 hours unless baked using infrared lights! Then it’s 2 hours to wet sand! Always overlap your strokes at half the fan pattern 50% overlapping! This helps you get a better coverage with no “tiger striping” keep your speed exactly the sam each pass. And have the tip of the gun 12 inches from the job! Always set your gun up first! Get the biggest fan pattern on paper spray out card. Then reduce the fan a inch top n bottom. Also reduce the paint volume on the gun till there’s nothing coming out then dial it in till you have at full trigger around 2/3rds the the volume of paint! This will allow you to control the flow better stopping runs!
      You want 2 guns one with a 1.8 tip for primer. And a 1.2-1.3. Tip for colour and top coat!
      Hope this helps!!!
