This video was perfect for our needs. My daughters new barrel horse is all go and has a lot of anxiety in slower gaits. We have been working on getting her to relax and to decrease the head tossing, and this was explained so well. Thanks.

When i started my lessons i was put on a mare who would throw her head and start snorting at things in the arena etc. This truly broke my confidence and my instructor wouldn't let me ride a different horse. She would instruct me to use the crop on her and i didn't feel it was right. I didn't trust the horse and finally stopped my lessons when she spooked at the owner when she had a plastic bag in her hand. I left the stables in tears as i felt this was a horrible beginning. I want to learn to ride and hope i soon find a better situation to do it in.

Aww what a shame! I've never taken lessons or given them but just from my experience with my own horses, I would NEVER put someone else on a horse that was "spooky" or a horse the person didn't feel comfortable with. I believe the horse can sense your apprehension and that will make them more nervous.

That said, I really hope you find someone you're more comfortable with because riding in general is a joy! I couldn't imagine life without my horses💖

A lot of times head shaking is due to a badly fit mouthpiece or constant pressure on the reins or it could also be that he may have wolf teeth. It's worth having someone look at that. But, usually, it's because of bad hands.

Hi, I am definitely a new rider and I am riding an older mare I am actually leasing her. I really don’t know much about riding I took a few lessons and I can get on her and I can walk around but I want to learn how to teach her commands because I don’t know what she knows and neither are the people that have her she was kind of abandoned. She is 23 years old and 17 hands so she is very big. I am more than willing now I’ve been riding since June I am more than willing now to spend time in the arena Working with her I saw a few videos yesterday from you you guys here and I’m going to put an action getting her to go back and getting her to come forward today and see how that works for me. I am not a young girl I am an older woman but absolutely love being on the horse

Hello, thank you for your videos. Do you think it is fair to restart a healthy 20 year old horse if she has had about 8 years off? She was well started and schooled previously. I ask as some people say leave her to retirement, its cruel? Thank you,

Question To tag on the head tossing video. My off the track Arabian is perfect in the arena but when out in the field will throw his head in the air when asked to slow. Or Will lean into bit to go faster and isnt soft anymore . Also he is a lot more soft going out then coming back home as he wants to go faster on the way home

Somewhat related: Any suggestions on how to deal with a horse who constantly rubs against you while in cross ties? I use blocker tie rings, which have helped with a lot of the stress behavior I’ve seen from my new mare while in ties. But the rubbing is absolutely obnoxious. Help!

You have to push them away firmly, I did this and after a bit it mostly stopped

This is a bad behavior. Horses do this in herds, between them and especially the more dominant is rubbing the less one. One horse school, a middle age thoroughbred tried it with me each time I stepped down. I think other riders accept it as a nice thing but no... This is what I said to her : No, I am not your tree. Lol. I pushed her back. She understood it quickly, she is very smart. After it is me who decides when, where and how I 'm going to scratch her mostly on her forehead. She is happy, not pushy or rubbing her head. This is here due to other riders who don't understand what is a bad behavior.
Here it is your horse. He is young so he' ll learn quite quickly. Stay firm.
We are not their property! 😂🌳🐴 You must eventually reward vocally his good behaviour, add a treat if he doesn't rub you but.... I fear it could become a kind of bad habit. To seem rubbing you to get a treat as a reward. Be careful. I hope I could help you.😊From France. 😉🇫🇷

My only one mare (female horse) gave me a bite 2 days ago when I was checking her left front roof, I'm scared now of trying to learn on her, what did happen? Is it a problem with her roof? As I asked in another video, I am really scared.

Hi, I need help on an issue I'm having. I ride a big 16 hand jumper mare, she's very sensitive and I have soft hands so she is happy in the mouth, but I tend to pinch with my thigh/upper leg and that's where she gets upset. I don't know how to take my leg off and relax, it seems so simple on the ground, but as soon as I ride I pinch with my legs and it makes her frustrated and I can't seem to get how to take leg off. Please help or comment back as soon as possible. Thank you

The horse I ride is a perfectionist. She pulls on me when I aggravate her. On Wednesday I did nothing to make her mad, but she still pulled. My instructor says she is being a brat, but she pulled on me on ground. My horse is afraid of having her head pulled down, so she doesn't normally pull back because it scares her. She's 16 hh but I am not quite five feet tall. That means if she lifts her head and pulls back on me she gets spooked. Can you help me?

Crafty Equestrian have you had your horses teeth floated? Which bit do you use?
You still shouldn't come out the saddle if you have a good seat.
