5 of 5 on air cooled volkswagen head tips and tricks I have experienced over the years. Might add to this later but I want to start bolting together the 1776 and get down the road again.
Don't apologize your doing great And thank you for the mass of decades of your gained knowledge Your "rambling" vast knowledge And if someone complains it's not in order bla bla well they can go read a book And it won't have 1/10 the real deal tips n priceless tricks. Thanks again for sharing
Thanks man, you've shared pretty much the whole process of your dealing with the VW engine. I found your chanel as I'm plannig to build a VW engine and next - buy a car. I owned four VW's in the 80's as my daily ride and I want to get back there sort of. Your channel has been very useful. Regards, Oskar
Tks, for you're videos and time, the planet needs more good people like you, soon I'm getting my first vw. is a 65, don't know the car got it true internet sale, so the videos help a lot to understand a vw
Thank you. It's a little scary putting yourself out there but it is fun and rewarding so far because of folks like you. Thanks for watching taking the time to comment. It helps keep me going. Take care.
Glad you liked them. I have a lot more to do in the garage so keep coming back. Ounce I get all the mechanical stuff done I want to start doing a bit of body and paint. I will need help from all you painters out there.
Thanks for the videos. I have a trick to hold a valve closed when removing a valve spring on a mounted head. On the compresion stroak remove the sparkplug and insert as much as you can of a piece of roap into the plug hole with the cylinder down then turn the crank by hand to compress the rope to the valve. I hope that will give you another trick you can put in your bag of tricks.
Gasketcinch by permatex, High temp Silicone RTV with copper, Loctite makes a sealer too. The most important thing is to have the surface clean before you apply it. I like brake cleaner on a clean cotton cloth for that. Have never had a problem with the case halves leaking it's always the oil cover plate or fuel pump or generator stand that seems to have a little weeping at times. That stuff is easy to fix if you need to.
Heck, we are all on the learning curve. I'm learning new stuff and easier way's of doing things all the time. Most of my friends and family don't give two hoots about VW stuff but U tube gives me a way to share all this stuff with folks that want to know. Thank you again for watching and commenting.
Thanks. Glad you liked it. Go to my channel page and then go to my play lists. I have tried to arrange things in some kind of order. I have built complete tube frame sandrails from scratch and still have some things around my garage. As I get caught up with my projects I may decide to build something and makes some vids as I go.
+Tim Woods Some day when I run into that problem again I will make a vid but for now you can cut a slot with a dremel disc, use some heat with a propane torch. Us a lot of penetrating oil, some light tapping 3 Lords prayer 5 Hail Mary's. Use same size replacement stud and locktight them in. Cheers!
I do not have experience with that task. Heads are so important and take so much abuse. I figure if the heads are so old that they are falling apart I will just go ahead and buy new ones. CB performance is a good source for aftermarket heads.
What's an easy trick to get the valve through the guide? Without damaging the guide. When the valve gets to the keeper grooves it sticks. I thought about trying to file it. Or heat

Thanks Oskar. It seems like there are a lot of us having fun with the retro surge in cars and motorcycles. A longing for a simpler time.
Thanks for all you're doing to help us newbies get a better handle on our projects.
I agree 1uptospeed, you are such a great teacher, you make people go out and try it. I wish I had teachers like you when I was in school.
Great wrap up. I learned a lot from this series... Still not ready to do my own headwork, but I know more today than I did two weeks ago.
👍 Great video series.
Thank you. It's people like you that keep me in the game.
Nice video set.

I have a question if you're willing. What is the best way to seal the two case halves together. I must have missed that part. Thanks
thanks for all the info, my question is what about the studs for the sound system? Always seem to strip or break off. any tricks there? thanks Tim.

Don't heat. Use a small flat mill file and take the bur off the keeper grooves. It should slide right out. I'm glad your paying attention to detail.
Thanks I used a file and it came right out. Will creating a gap in the keepers keep it from happening? If so how much of a gap?
