The greatest ass kicking in all of film is not in a martial arts movie or a superhero movie, it's completely verbal and it's at the end of There Will Be Blood.

I think I ended up just starting over completely fresh the next day and it's just a fantastic movie. And, as a soundtrack nerd, Jonny Greenwood got screwed by the Academy with their rules that deemed his score ineligible. Absolutely would have won that year.

The reason Plainview is sympathetic is that he has admirable attributes in addition to the fucked up ones. The entire opening sequence (like 25 minutes) is dedicated to showing his ingenuity, drive, work ethic, strength, competitive/industrious nature etc. Its like how people love Steve Jobs even though he was an "asshole" and some people are like "why do people like this jerk?!". The Jobs/Plainview critics are naive and dont understand biology (that there are attributes that are rare and necessary for civilization, and that people in these roles need to be ruthless jerks). People like Plainview have other attributes that the average person doesnt have, and it makes them admirable in a different way.

My favorite Daniel Day-Lewis performance is 'In the Name of the Father' (1993), also one of my favorite movies of all time. Paul Dano is an incredible actor, still have to watch one of his movies 'L.I.E.' (2001) with another amazing actor Brian Cox. Years later they made together another movie, 'The Good Heart' (2009). Paul Thomas Anderson is (of course) one of my favorite directors, 'Hard Eight' (a.k.a. 'Sydney'), 'Boogie Nights' (also in my top 10), 'Magnolia', 'Punch-Drunk Love', ' The Master', 'Inherent Vice' (needs multiple viewings before you're really gonna dig it, well, I did), and his last one I haven't watch it yet (got it in my collection tho) 'Phantom Thread' are all recommended, especially 'Boogie Nights' (about the 1970s and early 80s porn movie industry) and 'The Master' (obviously based on the origin of the Scientology Church), 'Magnolia' is also (although they're all) amazing!

The novel this was based on, "Oil!", is by Upton Sinclair, a famous American socialist best known for his other novel, "The Jungle", which caused so much public outcry at its depiction of conditions in meatpacking plants-based on (effectively) investigative journalism on Sinclair's part-that it inspired the passage of the Food and Drug Act and the creation of the FDA to enforce it. It's been said that he aimed at America's heart and hit its stomach.
The film is amazing, and Daniel Day-Lewis and Paul Dano are both incredible; I've rarely seen such a realistic and believable depiction of psychopathy/narcissism in film. The political subtext of the capitalist robber baron being an irredeemable monster isn't bad, either.
For what it's worth, I think the intended target was John D. Rockefeller more than anyone else, but astute comparisons nevertheless.

You should watch DDL sag awards acceptance speech for this movie. He pays tribute to Heath Ledger and dedicates award to him.

This is a complex film, with complex characters in it. It is no surprise that Daniel Day Lewis decided to work in this film, despite the fact that it was very different from the types of roles he had portrayed in the past. It was a real acting challenge for him to work on this film, and I get the impression that he enjoyed the challenging work.

Daniel Day-Lewis always wins because he’s absolutely amazing. The only time I didn’t think it was deserved was when his role as Lincoln beat Joaquin Phoenix in The Master(another Paul Thomas Anderson movie). Personal opinion. Phoenix is AMAZING in that movie. You should watch it. Philip Seymour Hoffman
Is also unreal. If you liked the music here the same composer did the soundtrack for The Master.

I watched it recently. Both PSH and Phoenix were amazing.

Watch ''My Left Foot''(1989) for Daniel Day Lewis's acting masterclass.

Which performance you think is better. I was absolutely amazed by My left foot, yet I think ddl as daniel plainview is the best I have ever seen.

Saying that you love watching Daniel but absolutely hate him.. good way of describing it. A thoroughly unlikable person, but he is mesmerizing.

What a delightful surprise. There Will Be Blood is a great movie. Daniel Plainview is a terrible person but, as you mentioned, Jimmy, he is also fascinating to watch.

lol that Owen Hart reference, but yeah, Vince is nuts - at the very least he helped Snuka cover up a murder
Anyways I fucking love this movie and was shocked to see a reaction to it, one of my favourite performances ever by DDL, my friends and I have quoted this movie to each other since it came out, happy you liked it as much as I did
