Excellent value for the money. All of the detail features you expect from a Genesis car, and they run great. Thanks for watching!

These cars have grown on me. Initially I was put off a bit by the orange peel in the paint finish and the paint seems a bit thick. But they run great and have nice detail and I've had them out on the layout for 5 or 6 hours all total and I've had no issues with them. The SP patched cars you have would be from after UP took over SP and all the Golden West cars were patched back into SP and SSW reporting marks. I'm glad you like your cars; I'm a fan of Athearn Genesis. Thanks for watching!

Crazy number isn't! With SP's money woes there where hundreds and hundreds of cars out of service needing significant maintenance and no money to do it. So, SP sold the cars to Greenbrier, Gunderson rebuilt the cars and leased them back to SP in rebuilt condition. I guess it was a short-term fix for SP to get like-new freight cars back into service. SP-DRGW didn't have enough time to fully get back on their feet before the UP take over so it's hard to say how it would have worked out long term. Yes, I expect the GWS cars will run out their service life in blue paint. Thanks for watching!

These cars are quite nice. Now that I'm modeling present day I have a few of the recently announced patched and striped versions on pre-order.

They're cool and they have an interesting story. The SP/SSW patched cars would be great on a modern layout. Enjoy your cars, mine are great runners. Thanks for watching!

If I remember correctly, the SP Golden West didn't debut until around 1993, which is way past my cutoff date. They are nice looking and had a few before I decided I just had to have caboose trains, so I back dated to end of caboose era for my cutoff, which is about 1985 for the Rio Grande. For me it was a compromise I couldn't make so I decided to sell mine off. I am not a super tight prototype modeler, but the trains to me have to look right for the 1970's and 1980's time frame I am sticking with because of cabooses.

I totally get it. I based my decision to use the cars on them being built in the late 60's, and my source says cars entered into the GWS program in 1989 and started appearing in 1991. Regardless I've chosen to use them, but I understand your decision not to. I try to keep my equipment in a 1960-1980 time frame but I go outside those dates if it makes sense to me. I need to get a Rio Grande caboose. Thanks for watching!

In my opinion, for the price you paid it’s a no brainer. My layout is predominantly 1970-1980’s Soo Line but like you I also have a dozen CN and CP locomotives. In Illinois CN took over the line where I grew up. In the 1990’s I started seeing CP locomotives then a year or two later CN loco’s. Great video.

I grew up in Iowa and the Illinois Central and Milwaukee Road ran in my part of the state. Coming back to visit years later and it was all CN. Here in AZ where I live it was SP, then SP and Rio Grande, and then it all turned yellow. Can't say I'm happy with those changes, but no one asked my opinion. Yes, for the money it's an easy decision buying Genesis rolling stock. I appreciate you watching!

I totally agree. When I see some Genesis cars go on sale, and they're a fit for my layout, I'm going to get a couple. The cars run great, and they do look good running on the layout. I appreciate you watching!

Nice Review Of Some Beautiful Cars. I Really Like The Genesis Cars. You Got A Great Deal Too. I Have Three Of The Golden West Cars. Two Are With The DRGW & The SSW Patched Out
Reporting Marks And One Is A Prime For Grime With The SP Reporting Marks. I Think The Quality Is Very Good. In Would Definitely Purchase More. I Enjoyed Your Review And Run By.

Thanks Roger! I'm also a fan of the Genesis line, including the locomotives. The Golden West cars fill an interesting niche for guys modeling the SP, DRGW and later the UP with the patched cars. These cars could be found all over the country, so anyone with a North America railroad could justify having a few on their layout. I think we get a lot for the money with these Genesis cars, especially when they're on sale! I appreciate you watching!

@SP Steve, Those Golden West cars look pretty nice really. I love Athearn Genesis myself, a decent product at a decent price; something I'm not afraid to weather up like my Moloco's or even the Tangent's. You and I seem to share a common malady, it's called ECS. ECS stands for Era Creep Syndrome, and its when one 'fudges' the start or end dates of their stated ideal time period. Fortunately it's not painful or fatal and most modelers are unaware of it. It's like those SSW GP30's, they appear in the pre 1965 paint scheme, which was why I did not get any; hopefully they will do a run in the 5000 series for my era. I love GP30's. I thought about renumbering one and painting the yellow railings SP gray, but figure I'm in no rush, so will wait to see what's in the future. Keep up the great videos, I'm a fan.

Thanks John! I definitely have ECS, if it looks good to me and I think it fits my overall view of what I want to do, then I'll buy it and run it. I'm a big Genesis fan as well. I think they offer high detail at a reasonable price. Not as nice as a Moloco or Tangent, but better than most.
I hear you on the GP30's. I like the 5000 numbers better and I like the locomotives where they blend in better with the SP locomotives, but I do like the as delivered light packages. As you say, a renumber and handrail repaint would put the SSW GP30's right where they need to be. If I wasn't concerned with damaging the paint getting off the 700 numbers, I'd renumber the GP30's. The handrails are no big deal. Thanks for watching, I appreciate you!
