"The main thing about gardening is getting your hands dirty. " A good magnet/shirt idea. I'm taking your suggestion from a previous video and will be making compost tea because I don't have enough compost for my garden. However, I do have enough to make compost tea, so that's the next best thing, in my opinion.

So excited for you Jess. I’m a regenerative flower farmer using Dr. Ingham’s techniques as well as the 100% free amendments I make using the science and and recipes from Nigel Palmer’s book “The Regenerative Grower’s Guide to Garden Amendments.” Egg shells, bones, weeds, indigenous micro-organisms, and vinegar are my base ingredients. It’s literally life changing. Introducing so much biology, growing healthy soil, and all from the things either I produce or are already here.

I spent most of this past week building soil! Both my inground and container soils. The Spring chicken coop cleanouts give me plenty of the deep litter shavings&poop, the old compost and wood piles have goodies for me, and all the empty containers get dumped to add to the mix. My back and shoulders ache, I've sprained my right wrist and hand, but it is finally done. Spent the past few days laying out and planting. Feels good to finally be getting this done, with the weather cooperating for a time. My seedlings are all ready, most already planted out. Seeds freshly sown. Piles of mulch at the ready. Let the growing begin!
Edited to add: I want to reinforce the importance of using items in your compost (or when purchasing compost) that have NOT been sprayed! Last year my good friend called me to cry about her garden. When she sent me the pictures my heart sank. Twisted and deformed leaves, stunted plants. She live in the city on a small house lot. She buys her compost. She had gotten some in bags, various brands, from the local big box store. She also got some from the city-managed sanitation department. I can't say for certain which source was the culprit. The only saving grace is that she gardens exclusively in containers. I helped her bag every crumb of her container soil and set it out for garbage pickup to the landfill. By then it was almost July, so she decided to wait for Fall to replant. She was demoralized, and being a relatively new gardener, it was hard for her to move forward. But she did. Now I share compost I've made with her. I feel this year is her garden's year to shine.

Our small town has piles of just leaves that they pile up to compost, the tree limbs, and other waste is shredded like mulch and I don't bother with that stuff. We have used them several times without issue. The last load was the first time they opened after 2 years of covid shut down and they were awesome crumbly black goodness. I hate that happened to your friend. Maybe she can check and find out if her town has a separate pile of just the tree leaves.

    • @WinkTartanBelle
      @WinkTartanBelle 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@gelwood99 Good idea! I'll check for her myself. I hated to see her new-found hobby become such a struggle for her. Meantime I've got enough black gold that I can afford to share some with her. And reusable black plastic nursery pots. I think they might be breeding in my shed . . . .

What you are doing is such a big project. You are learning and teaching at the same time. This will really improve how you learn and with your following it will help so many people to learn and hopefully make a huge impact on the world as a whole. When we can take the trash and use it to grow food and improve life for everyone instead of just filling up a landfill and polluting the soil, ground water and the air is amazing. More people need to think about what they are doing and how they can change what they do to improve their lives and the world as a whole.
For me this is a worm composting bin in my kitchen and chickens that eat scraps also. I am using this to grow my garden and feeding my family. I have also started using old clothes to make into rugs.
The big thing for me is trying to get away from plastic. That is harder than you can imagine but I know I have cut down my single use plastics by 25% so far.

You can even do compost in a 5 gallon planter that takes like 6 weeks. I live in an Apt setting. I keep every veggie/fruit scrap in Mason Jars & once they are full I puree up & transfer into a big storage container. Once that's full it goes to my compost planter. I use fabric planter, about 15 gallon. I have lots of wood chips from my Dad's tree that got cut down. Every Fall I have sooo much leaves that get on my balcony. I have a trash can full right now. Actually you can make compost with leaves that decompose.

Those look like a variation on Johnson-Su bioreactors! Easier, though, no pipes and less mass. The J-S bioreactors were developed here in New Mexico. Johnson and Su are married and worked here at NMSU, an agricultural university, when they came up with the method. Sadly, fresh grass clippings and dry leaves are scarce as hen's teeth here in the desert. I'm making compost with garden waste, kitchen scraps, and shredded brown paper bags. Works great, I love seeing soldier fly larvae in my tumblers. My neighbors save their kitchen scraps for me, lol. They are repaid in produce.

I give her my bags of egg shells, coffee grounds, & banana peels to bury in the dirt. Worms love it, and they help aerate our soil!! Tom Pemberton is a dairy farmer who is on TH-cam and they were talking about how fertilizer has gone up but because they have built up a system that collects and aerates their cows' manure into a slury, they are able to dress their field with what is typically waste and their grass looks amazing

This is what we'd like to do. We don't believe our property had round up on it but it had just been used for the family's camping spot for 50 or more years. So we have lots of compaction leaf litter buildup. However I'm loving our roughly 50% dirt 50% sand soil, besides of course more soil food, compaction issues and of some needed amending, I think we got pretty lucky.

It's such an important thing to be teaching especially in the current climate. In the UK they're beginning to offer subsidies to farmers using green fertilising methods as the prices have shot up so much for synthetic ones. Unfortunately, they're not doing it so much for sustainable purpose as a cost cutting and panic about food shortage purpose but it's definitely a step in the right direction if they can get it right.
I have a teeny garden but compost everything, mainly with multiple worm farms which work so well for small scale gardening (the 'worm juice' that drains out and can be watered down is an amazing feed while waiting for the castings) and slow composting piles as I've not got the room for hot ones. Nothing gets wasted though, even just using chop and drop it all goes back to feeding the garden. It doesn't need to be as complicated and intimidating as you think.

I have a suburban homestead and I live in an area that is not zoned for livestock animals so there is a local rancher that supplies me, or anyone who wants it, a mixture of cow, horse, llama, goat, sheep, rabbit and chicken manure that I lovingly call “super poop” and now other people from our local gardening group are also calling it super poop now😂 I did make sure that he wasn’t feeding his animals hay or feed treated with herbicides because I realize the damage herbicides can cause to a garden 🥰

Yes!! Been learning about compost teas using rain water with all the stuff from the yard and garden left overs. Several ppl use Comfrey and Moringa (hi in nitrogen). Really excited about the Moringa (spelling??) after reading about it 🙂

Just a thought. So the pallets covered with hardware cloth might prevent the worms and other life that is in the soil from migrating up into the piles. What do you think?

OH! How I LOVE to make dirt! We did a similar project two years ago and it works well! Then COVID hit and we got very...distracted. It is fun to watch the process as it works! The hard part is keeping them moist throughout the season. we called 'em bio-digesters! They shrank by about a third to a half as they went through the season.

I use dry leaves and food scraps. I do cold compost so it takes 6 months here to 1 year. Literally the first thing i learned to do is compost, then i learned how to seed, then i got a few raised beds.

I have done something similar in the past, but I put it at the end of a building we had and I think that blocked the air flow to much. It eventually broke down, but didn’t work as well as I wanted. I had to watch this video twice to get the details on the measurements for the wire. I’m gonna try again! I have several static piles because we have about 75 rabbits and 50 chickens.....lots of poop from both! Neighbors have cows that we get manure from so it’s time to make a new pile!

Aren't you afraid to grow food on your Round-up sprayed ground until enough time has passed so it won't impact food you plant in it? Also, I wonder how much time that might be? Maybe you could just plant a living mulch by planting peas and oats or red clover or something and cut it when it grows and compost that in place and after a year maybe it would clean it up or somehow rejuvenate it.
On second thought, Comfrey is good for healing bones and tissue in mammals and also a great companion for some plants. Maybe covering your growing area with compost tea with a LOT of Comfrey in it would help neutralize the Round-up. It is just a thought.

You need bunnies! And the boys can take care of them. :) And you get all the good bunny poops! And (I know you already know) they produce dry manure and can be added straight into your garden beds without composting first like you do with hot manure.

Here in the south east, it’s pretty common to get a nice early spring and everything turn green, then get a hard freeze that resets everything back to the beginning of spring. 🙄
