I wouldn't quite consider myself a frost tender flower. I'm more like lettuce. I can tolerate colder temperatures, am happiest in moderate weather, and get extremely bitter when it's too hot outside.

The swale is the ditch, the mound is a berm. You are going to make berms which will then result in swales beside them.

    • @sharonknorr1106
      @sharonknorr1106 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

Still a little confused, though. Just piling up a bunch of wood chips does not a swale make. There needs to be some digging out of the soil to direct the water where you want it to go. Then putting wood chips at the bottom of the swale or on top of the berm would be a fine idea and would eventually build up fertility. But I know that Jess said she is in a permaculture course, so I would trust that they would know what they are doing. It's just a bit muddled in the vlog.

Loooving the greenhouse! I did want to drop a little info. Plexiglass is quirky, it can haze over easily. Do not use windex on it or any chemical cleaners, or it will have a haze. We normally use a soap and water in spray bottle. And clean soft cloth. I just wanted to share that. You probably already know it but incase you didn't want to help you preserve that lovely space.

I am so very glad you changed your plans to include the raised bed gardens around the greenhouse. It will reflect the romance you had in Arkansas and you will feed your soul. Sitting inside the greenhouse with the views of the garden around you is your sacred zone and I am glad you will have that again. Being practical is not a bad thing but doing it the way you love should be the first thing. Thank you, Matthew, for being the factor in helping Jess come to that decision! I will add this small bit of advice, take the woven weed blocking mat and put it under your new raised beds. I will not prevent Bermuda grass from coming up in the beds but it will slow it down and greatly reduce the amount that does making it easier to remove as it shows itself! Having help in the garden will be a wonderful thing for sure. What a lucky girl to have access to knowledgeable people willing to work and share that knowledge!

Around here, Spring is until it hits 90 degrees more than 2 days in a row, becoming early Summer. Then it stops raining more than once a month and the temps hover around 100, becoming Summer. Then around December we get early Winter, because Fall sometimes forgets to visit us.

So glad you are making a sanctuary garden outside the greenhouse. I seem to sing or hum hymns like I walk in the Garden and Then Sings My Soul whenever I'm contemplating life in the garden. Eventually you could have soft, piped in music and everyone could relax and understand the importance of your garden. I truly think God loves a garden as so many lessons in the Bible are based on understanding how plants grow and of course, Eden. Your old garden was what got me to grow flowers in mine - for the plants/pollinators and for me to just plain enjoy beauty. I also must have a sitt'n stump to look over my kingdom. Can't wait to get ideas from yours.

Merch, stickers, books, plant sales, online classes, in person classes, coffee house, farm-to-table restaurant, TV show. Does anyone else feel like we are watching the birth of an empire? A gardening/food sustainability empire. Can't you see Jess designing aprons and coveralls, and Miah inventing useful tools and gadgets? I know the word "empire" can have a negative feel to it, but it is the word, phrase really, that floated into my mind as I was watching this video "birth of an empire."

I so understand being a frost tender flower! My son was (we lost him at 49 this past October 20,2021) and my grandson is a very warm blooded person. My son has been known to shovel snow in shorts, boots, a warm jacket, and knit hat!! With the drafts along the floor in my little rental house during the winter, it feels like my toes and feet are ALWAYS freezing cold along with my hands. Sometimes it feels like my toes are frozen and finally thaw in the spring. Our winters can get into single degree temps F⁰ +/-, and up to 110 ⁰F in the summer. Since I rent I can't dig in the yard so am trying container gardening for fruits n veggies this summer. Thank you for the inspiration! God bless!!

Instead of a desk what about mounting a swing chair or a hammock and using a camera mount on the wall😉

That garden she talks about - orderly areas, wilder areas, paths throughout...that's what I want to turn my 2 acres into. I want a space where little delights and discoveries are around each twist and turn of the path, and I don't see any reason why I shouldn't have it now that the person who stood in my way is gone from my life. Life is too short to mow grass.

Your friend was right about having benches by the fountain. It would be nice to have a rose arch above each for shade. So when taking a break for some water, you can become mesmerized by the sight & sound of the water while you take 5 in the shade. You better be there when Miah sets it up. The speed of the water in the fountain will have different sounds, just like an instrument. It can be maddening if it's not set right, LOL.

Jess, I dont know if you saw Lukes last MIGardener video on intensive lettuce gardening? To me, that is even MORE lovely than any flower you can grow. I get as much satisfaction from growing a vast beauty of nourishing food than flowers any time, knowing it will sustain my family.

I love your plans for your garden around the greenhouse. The greenhouse just keeps getting better and better. I can't wait to see all the gardens you'll set-up along the driveway to the house and the barn. The swales made from the woodchips sounds like an excellent idea. I'm so glad you have help from Will for the garden and his idea for the woodchip swales is brilliant! I think it is Spring! Have a great trip this weekend. Thanks for this Jess.

I'd do raised beds all the way. Your back will thank you for it in later years. I love your fountain. I could see some concrete walking paths going around it with stepping stones custom made by all of your family, with crushed stone filling in the blank areas, with alot of clay potted flowers and antique iron gardens things. Love the fence idea and the benches to sit on. Tell Miah he's a champ! Love the greenhouse, it's beautiful! God bless!

Your videos give me so much joy and hope. I love seeing you DO your dream! You are doing it! Even with kids and a husband and all the responsibility and crazy that comes with that. You are really doing it! I had big dreams really similar to this since junior high school, and getting married and having kids has kinda derailed that dream for me. But your videos encourage me to not give up on that dream! I am so proud of you for all the hard work and stewardship that you have put into building this dream of yours and so happy that you ARE living THE dream as far as I’m concerned! Thank you for blazing the trail for many of us!

So I've recently become pretty addicted to your channel, lol. I love watching how you're building this new space. It helps me think of ways that I can build up my 1/3 acre space.
I would love to see another overhead view with some of your ideas for the garden belt area now that you've gotten it a bit more planned.

Personally, I'd say put in some low shelves along that front wall ( right below those vent windows). Just little 6 inch wooden shelves to put beautiful things there. Little potted plants or some of those quartz rocks. Just something to make it even more lovely. I have a little table out with a wicker bench in front of my garden and throughout the season it collects pretty little found things that are nice to look at❤️

    I LOVE the heat!
As I get older, though, I can tolerate colder temperatures more easily and I wear tank tops and flip flops in 60 and 70 degree weather as long as the wind isn't blowing 🙃
