Death - Defensive Personalities (Full Cover)

So, anyone who has heard the Demisery - Hive of Mutation album should already know that I'm a huge fan of Death, as we recorded a cover of Flattening of Emotions on that album.
I was jamming on this killer song recently, and decided on a whim to record a full cover of it, just for fun. Not trying to tone-match anything, just did it all quickly over a couple of nights.
This track originally appeared on Death's "Spiritual Healing" album from 1990, and very well might be my favorite Death album! It was the only Death album to feature James Murphy on lead guitar alongside Chuck, and this album was a massive influence for me vocally, as well as for my guitar playing. At one point I could sit and play along with the entire album front to back, and James' lead playing was especially influential to me, and is still to this day!
Note: I originally tried to do the "Deny who they are" and Existing in a world" lines in one take, but decided after to split them up after, for the proper effect (and I didn't video myself doing that.)

Tyler Braun Thanks! Absolutely LOVE the Apocalypse set! One of my favorite pickups ever. Lundgren Black Heaven are the only other set that compares. Just the right amount of output, along with incredible clarity. Love them.

I learned to play this at 15 but never could nail that solo. Excellent work, man. Such a good job. I had to move on to hardcore punk. I took after Drew Speziale (CTTS) after those years. That's about as technical as I could get.

Your vocals remind me more of the guy from Obituary. You two have the same timbre in your voices.
Yeah, I can do his style pretty well too. Several of those old-school DM vocalists all used essentially the same technique. Schuldiner, Van Drunen, Mameli, Tardy, Lemay, Hoffmann, Karki, Otero, they all put some "voice" into their vocals. I love that sound!

Eric Labrek Mostly just laziness lol. This whole recording happened pretty quickly, my 8100 isn't readily available atm, and the 6505 was already set up, and was sounding good so I just went with it. Plus, Chuck wasn't using the 8100 yet at that point, I figured no biggie. I'll do some recording with it one of these days!

I have done almost everything to my larynx but still wasn't successful in performing the sound that you've unleashed in the given duration, I'm begging you, please teach me in detail about how should i do it.
So far, I only know that it's a multi-layered vocal technique, but i cannot discover them separately, can you please provide us a few seconds instructional video on how to do it ?
Thanks for the kind words! To be honest, I'm not entirely sure what's going on in those spots on the original recording! To me it sounds like there might be an effect on the voice, and I've never heard Chuck make that sound anywhere else, so I think that might be what they did. For me, I was able to recreate it with just a single voice by tightening my throat a lot and singing with kind of a higher tone, almost a black metal type of voice, and afterwards I added a flanger effect with a slow speed, and 100% mix just on those words "deny" and "existing", to give it that 'sweeping' effect, and the end result sounds quite similar, I think.

@@GordOlson How do you find them in comparison to tracking vocals with a PG58 (with a pop filter, obviously)?
I've not used a PG58, but I've used SM58 mics a lot (and I guess they sound very similar). And although I would say that the SM7B is definitely a cleaner sounding mic, it's not drastically different sounding than the SM58. Totally possible to get great vocal tracks with an SM58, lots of great albums were recorded that way. The SM7B also requires a ton of clean gain, like 60dB minimum, and some interfaces won't provide enough headroom for it, whereas you'll definitely be fine with the SM (or PG) 58

Thanks! That's actually untrue about the vocals though. It just takes a while for your ear to get used to it. The more you listen to death metal, the more you will start to hear the differences between singers. I can instantly identify all of my favorite DM vocalists by different nuances that they exhibit.
