  • The muscle is 15 mm in diameter and generates 700 kgf contraction force.
The hydraulic high-power muscle has been developed by Suzumori Endo Robotics Laboratory at Tokyo Institute of Technology and Bridgestone Corporation as part of the Impulsing PAradigm Change through disruptive Technologies program (ImPACT) Tough Robotics Challenge which is an initiative of the Cabinet Office Council for Science, Technology and Innovation.

@@gamerfortynine I think the new thing would be the technology that can control the pressure, and combine several of these phallic tubes to produce almost natural range of motion and control.
Honestly, I'm sure in many environments the limited range of motion of prior robotics would be better, but balloons seems interesting.
I wonder how long until we can have mechanical donkeys to ride through the streets, or mechanical waifus to lower the birth rate to 0 and cause societal collapse.

This is basically a precursor to the kind of technology shown in the movie iRobot. The new model of robots in the movie had "muscles" tethers to a metal skeleton that mimicked the shape of human muscles. If we mimic the shape and placement of major human muscles with the ones shown in this video, would it produce natural, humanlike movement?

The compressor on that thing must weigh a ton and take up a lot of power, I think it's the thing behind the blue tarp in the last clip, not fitting on a bipedal robot anytime soon, at least not one that can fit through a door.

What if you used it in a hexapod with the shape of the OSU adaptative suspension vehicle ?

@@ulforcemegamon3094 If you mean to carry the power supply and compressor, I have thought of similar concepts and agree with your general approach. I think it would be difficult to get such a large accompaniment up and down stairs, but if you only need to get up short stairs and otherwise operate within tether range of accessible floor space than a wheeled tether makes a lot of sense. As cool as hexapods are, the weight and size of the tether just seems a bit much for indoor mobility.

Okay, "force controllable up to high values", like what? You put kg, which is a unit of mass. Like, is that a weight scale?

What materials are being used? As noted by another commenter, this appears to be a McKibben muscle; I assume it's the materials (particularly the bladder) that make this exceptionally strong. What's the minimum hydraulic pressure required before unloaded contraction occurs?

      whats unloaded contraction?

Air muscles require a certain amount of air pressure before they begin to contract (without any load to them; basically the minimum pressure needed for the bladder to begin to expand, and push against the containment mesh.)
