    Wow I had absolutely no idea you needed to come to the test having read one of these books! Thankfully I've already read and watched About a Boy so I can just skim through the pages to freshen up my memories. Thanks for the tip!

      You don't have to read one of the books, it's optional. But, as you've already read About a Boy, it's probably a good idea to keep that option open.

    Hi, thanks for the tips in this video, especially the timing of the prep and the writing itself. I followed it to the minute and it really paid off. I found out that the less time I spend preparing, the messier the text becomes and the more corrections it requires. Again, great advice! It helped me pass my exam with good results.

    I wish I'd known about those super rigid marking criteria before sitting the exam. I produced what must have been the best texts of my life: impeccable, elegant, high-flying, but got only 60%. Very very very very very frustrating.

    Hello, are you certain that it's necessary to write about the books/films listed on the Cambridge website? As it states there:
    Candidates should not attempt the optional set text question in Part 2 unless they have the necessary understanding of the text to answer the task. If you read one of the set books and want to write about it, you may decide to try Question 5. You have a choice of two tasks, 5(a) or 5(b) for this question. You may have to write an article, essay, letter, report or a review.
    It seems as it's entirely optional as of now. I have the CPE Exam on Saturday, and I haven't really prepared for it prior, so having to consume literature on top of that seems like an impossible task.

    • @tothepointenglishwithben.
      @tothepointenglishwithben.  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, it's not compulsory. In part 2 of the writing paper you'll have 4 options. So, 3 other options apart from the set texts.

  • @messinround4810

    May be a stupid question, but how did yall keep track of word counts for your answers?
    Should you individually count words once you're done and slightly alter your answer if you're above/below the threshold? I can't imagine having the time to do that....
    Does the computer automatically keep track of word count for you, if you're taking the computer based exam?
    Thanks

    • @randommarble
      @randommarble ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A bit late but you might want to keep track of how many words you've written so far as you write your text. I read on the Cambridge website that actually the word limit isn't compulsory, it's just a recommendation. You can exceed the 280 words but remember that if you do, it is possible that you might be including off-topic ideas and that does lead to a penalisation. Likewise, if your text is under 200 words, you might not have included some essential ideas that are actually required. So the length itself isn't what will affect your score

    • @miriamllamas224
      @miriamllamas224 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      A late answer but it might help another viewer: You could have an average of words per line, and then keep track of the number of lines you write.

    So, just to make sure I do not make any mistake. The set text questions are just a "plus", so if I haven't read the text, I don't need to answer them and still not being in trouble with my final grade? Thank you a lot for all the content related to the exam.

    • @tothepointenglishwithben.
      @tothepointenglishwithben.  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Options 5a and 5b in part 2 of the writing paper will be on the set texts (books). You don't have to choose this option as you will have three other options (2, 3 and 4) in part 2.

    • @tothepointenglishwithben.
      @tothepointenglishwithben.  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They used to change every 2 years but there won't be any more after the current ones, which will be options until the end of 2023, because Cambridge have decided not to offer the set text options in the future.
