It's a subtle twist on UFO mythology that often goes overlooked when talking about this movie. Here, you are given the impression that the extraterrestrials are innocently curious about humanity and human civilization, and simply aren't sure about an appropriate way to communicate or fully reveal themselves. It probably has not occurred to them that their sporadic appearances would cause disruption or make the other sentients worry they were malevolent. They just don't know what to do! The communication via tonal scale showed them that the humans had the capacity to potentially understand their way of thinking, and so they were encouraged to be brave and risk landing.
@@bluedotdinosaur I remember reading a novella about human spaceship and alien spaceship meeting each other by chance in nebula they both are studying at the same time. And the aliens seem to smile the same way we do, which is unlikely. Even our closest relatives, apes, have a different meaning when they "smile". It means that they are angry. Spielberg originally debunked it, and said that wasn't his script edit - but I remember the first time I saw the movie when I was young, I thought that was exactly what had happened to Roy. I believe Spielberg has gotten a bit softer on that theory now over time, and leaves it now to the viewer's interpretation. However, he has gotten harder on saying that he would never have had Roy leave if he re-wrote it today, as Spielberg became a father himself later on. I also think this is for the viewer's interpretation though, ironically - the closing scenes make it clear that the aliens can and do bring people back, and given the aliens abilities, it could seem like only a day has passed, even with him gone a while is perhaps possible. Plus, Barry was gone only a short time as well, after all.
It would have really clinched the scene if someone from the control tower went running up to the scientists shouting "We've just got the translation of the musical code. It's a recipe for Royburgers!"

Spielberg's love of Pinocchio and The Blue Fairy (also seen in his film A.I.) comes out in John Williams' score here. "When You Wish Upon a Star." Starting at 00:50.
I’ve sometimes wondered if they did film a sequel shortly after the original was made, and it has been kept secret to be released sometime soon. We might then see Roy returning 50 years later, but still only a day older than he was when he joined the ship! Food for thought eh?!
In recent years I've wondered, did CE3K inspire the Serpo story, or was the Serpo story circulating in the 70's and inspired Spielberg to incorporate it in his movie?
Aliens: "These creatures from that small blue and green planet all look the same and they're kinda ugly, but they're nice enough. Yo Gloogob, what did they call themselves again?" Gloogob: "Humans, Blerf. They are called humans. I kinda like 'em" Blerf: "yeah, me too"
It's interesting to know that, during the 50th Academy Awards, John Williams was nominated for Close Encounters of the Third Kind. He lost the nomination for the movie, BUT he was awarded for composing Star Wars!
Wrong! Travis Walton is on record stating that the movie, 'Fire In The Sky' was nothing like his actual experience. It was highly fictionalized. He has actually stated that he believes that he was taken so that the entities could save his life after he ran toward the craft as it was attempting to leave.
Bullseye. My favorite part of any movie that I have ever seen. In 1970, a taxi hovered 40 feet away from me, only 10 feet off of the ground for a full minute of itinerary. Plucking Linda B. was a no go. Me? Better luck next time. What do I need, a written invitation?

😅
What did he say through his hand gestures to the alien and with the alien say back to him?
This is what i hope first contact will be! Friends, peace, not any fear! I hope they visit us publicly soon!
Terrifyingly beautiful
Wish they made a sequel to this !!! Great movie
I getcha in a way, but I'm glad they didn't too. No sequel would ever be as special as the original for me.
I’ve sometimes wondered if they did film a sequel shortly after the original was made, and it has been kept secret to be released sometime soon.
We might then see Roy returning 50 years later, but still only a day older than he was when he joined the ship!
Food for thought eh?!
It's been far too many years since I watched this last.
This made me smile, I’d only heard of this like it was just pure horror but this ending is hope.
Im totally OBSESSED
In recent years I've wondered, did CE3K inspire the Serpo story, or was the Serpo story circulating in the 70's and inspired Spielberg to incorporate it in his movie?
Greatest movie ever made and Richard Dreyfuss is the alien that comes back out, watch the 1980 special edition .
Don't know if it's just a rumour but apparently they had a collision with ET. He was DUI at the time.. 4:17
The children on the UFO choose roy to be there King.
Aliens: "These creatures from that small blue and green planet all look the same and they're kinda ugly, but they're nice enough. Yo Gloogob, what did they call themselves again?"
Gloogob: "Humans, Blerf. They are called humans. I kinda like 'em"
Blerf: "yeah, me too"
Does the Alien smile to bridge the ‘emotional’ boundary between them & humanity?
Never noticed that before.
if you look up every once in a while you'll find that this isn't fiction
It's interesting to know that, during the 50th Academy Awards, John Williams was nominated for Close Encounters of the Third Kind. He lost the nomination for the movie, BUT he was awarded for composing Star Wars!
I was only 3 but I can imagine every movie theater audience in tears
You watch as the Glacier’s all melt we won’t be only discovering dead climbers and animals…..ALIENS!
Travis Walton, I guarantee, gave this movie the finger when it came out. He had his own experience in 1975, and it was nothing nearly so benign.
Wrong! Travis Walton is on record stating that the movie, 'Fire In The Sky' was nothing like his actual experience. It was highly fictionalized. He has actually stated that he believes that he was taken so that the entities could save his life after he ran toward the craft as it was attempting to leave.
You are thinking the movie, in his supposedly real account, they gave him a tram tour of some sorts
@@LMichaelL65 The whole Travis Walton farse was blown out many times and debunked. His brothers admitted it too.
They should make a sequel where he is brought back to Earth
No, no sequels please. Leave it as is, is perfect.
I was actually thinking the same. The world we're in could do with it.
Bullseye. My favorite part of any movie that I have ever seen. In 1970, a taxi hovered 40 feet away from me, only 10 feet off of the ground for a full minute of itinerary. Plucking Linda B. was a no go. Me? Better luck next time. What do I need, a written invitation?
poor guy never knew , , , , , To Serve Man , , , , , IT'S A COOK BOOK😂
I always loved this movie it in the bottom of my heart, I felt for the two sons he left behind. They will never see their father again and will be left alone. Philosophical question isn’t it? The cost of travelling into the unknown or the cost of the damage to people you loved.
They don’t make movies like this anymore
Ohhhh…this one looks meaty!
Yay, project mayflower! God, speed Roy Neary
We'll information good show 😅😊
