I believe the 'patches' at 28:12 are actually medal ribbons - probably the family still has the actual medals that go with them, but each specific ribbon design has a particular medal to match. Also, grosgrain ribbon for medals is increasingly hard to come by as the factories that make them close.

Excellent taste on the glittery pieces, so often pickers go for gaudy bling, rather than classy. That butterfly might be a hair clip. I have been led to believe that milk glass pieces are actually valuable. The button in that grab bag doesn't have to be military at all, I had a dress that had buttons like that on it in the 60's.
