I just love this channel. My great aunts always had us over and they always had a relish tray, a small one. With home made pickles and sometimes something else with the pickles. That was back when a salad for the course consisted of iceberg lettuce with a pineapple ring topped with mayonnaise. Which was excellent. I wish I’d known when I was having that salad that the 21st century would be a place that was far less interesting.
Thank you, John! Salads were a part of many meals at one time and it was always iceberg for us at home, too! Relish trays are always a nice touch on the table before the main course! Thanks!
Love it! No family get-together was complete without a relish tray: carrots, celery, green onions in spring, broccoli, red pepper, cauliflower all cut up with a dip in the middle and a few trays of beets, pickled eggs, olives, and pickles. My Polish grandma used to make chow-chow containing cauliflower from her garden and that was always featured in the relish tray. In the 1800's they had a smallish crystal glass vase for celery or spring onions that would be placed on the table. Thank you for sharing your love of old stuff!
Memories of my mom and my grandmothers, pickles, black olives, radishes when in season. Seems the veggie trays brought out today are usually prepackaged from Sam's Club or Costco. Convenience is wonderful, but a certain kind of style is missing today. Love the orange slices by the way!!
Hi Greg! Glad to meet another fan of the orange slices!! So good! I know, the veggie trays on the plastic platter just isn't the same somehow. Having the nibbles on these beautiful trays really make it special. Stay well!
My daughter in law and I love relish dishes too! I have many that belonged to my mom and grandma. My mom often gave a relish dish from Hudson’s for a wedding present. Love this topic!
Love the relish tray varieties! I still make relish trays for holidays. Always large black olives, small Gerkins, cucumbers, carrots sticks, and cherry tomatoes. Those are the only relishes my family will eat. I laughed when Ralph said something about putting the black olives on fingers! My kids did that and now the grandkids are sporting olive fingers. :)
You brought up a great memory when you mentioned Kresge's, my favorite. My grandma took me every Saturday and we ate in the kresge's cafeteria. My wife has a ton of these relish trays, and we use them alot. I really enjoy it when you do the special episodes about specific items like the toaster and blender, thanks for the great video's and memories.
Hi antcsoaw! Funny you share the story about going to Kresge's with your grandma. I used to go with my mom all the time and we would often go to the lunch counter and get a little snack or an ice cream sundae! I really miss those days! Thanks for watching!
My husband's uncle invented the blue light special! We have pictures fom the 60's & 70's of Uncle Bert & Aunt Bertha at a new K Mart store ribbon cutting!
I love this video. It took me back. When my mom used to have Tupperware parties and Sarah Coventry and she would serve a relish tray in one of these. It was an awesome time in my life. You bring back awesome memories from my childhood.
Hi Southern Cooking made simple! So glad you enjoyed the video and it brought back good memories! I remember my mom hosting a Tupperware party when I was a kid and it was really something! That would have been an occasion to break out the relish tray for sure! Thanks so much for watching!
Kevin, I have never been so happy to find a channel on TH-cam like yours. My partner and I just started watching you and he and I absolutely love your channel… Your collection is absolutely amazing and your recipes are fantastic… I cannot wait to try the lemon custard dessert… Also I am from a Polish background and I am looking forward to trying your kapusta recipe as well! The polka on in the background sounds like my home on a weekend listening to the polka shows!! I have been binge watching all your episodes and I feel like we have been friends for years!! 🥰🥰🥰 Warmly, Jeffrey 🙂
Hi Jeffrey - I'm glad you found the channel! Let me know how you like the kapusta recipe. It is just how my mom and grandma made it and I'm already looking forward to making a big batch in the fall when the weather cools down a little. Thanks so much for watching and I hope you enjoy the episodes!
I surely will tell you how it comes out! I’m prolly gonna wait til the fall too cause it’s so hot lately! I’m out in West Massachusetts here... I’m currently watching your episode of the Westinghouse Terrace top range! And that exact stove was what my mom had in her kitchen when I was growing up! Hers was a dark brown color and had everything yours has except no Florescent light in the back and no storage below she opted to have it more built in looking and had a piece of our cabinets in the kitchen set just below it as decoration and it was so sharp! I was so happy to see that you have one!!!! 🥰🥰🥰🥰
I have a beautiful 4 section, round relish tray in milk glass. Around the perimeter (edge) are gold pearl like balls. It was my Grandmothers from about 1963 or so when she first immigrated to Canada. It got passed down to my mother and then to me. When I moved to Malta it was one of my prized possessions I took with me.
You're grandmother's relish tray sounds beautiful! No doubt it's extra special because it belonged to her! It wonderful that you have it to remember her. Thanks!
We use relish trays every time we have a holiday dinner or company over. It’s a great way to bring out family dishes and have some munchies for all to enjoy.
WOW. Talk about a blast from the past. I wish I could come. I would bring a relish tray. Love your style! Love it when you say who wouldn’t like this !
Hi Kevin & Ralph - Beautiful collection of relish trays! We always had it out for company & holidays, & it was a staple at the Supper Club with a drink! I agree about the carrots & also include beets. TFS! 💕
Hi Kathy! Oh, I remember the supper clubs and the fancy relish trays they brought out! A bygone era! We had a place in Detroit that had chrome relish trays and it always had green onions, olives, marinated artichoke hearts and three bean salad on it! Stay well and strong!
I have a few of my grandmothers trays and I love knowing she used them to entertain! She was an INCREDIBLE hostess! She won many canning &preserving blue ribbons. She also won a culinary scholarship. She couldn't attend because she & my grandfather married, and he would enlisted & fought in WWII. So I love this! Thanks for confirming how to use them! Hopefully we'll see a resurgence in our entertaining! Thank you! 🤗🙌🏾
Maybe this is where the charcuterie board idea came from. Although these were mainly for veggies instead of meats cheeses. I have mine from back in the 50's and I still use them.
I really enjoyed seeing these relish trays and hearing about them. I have a handful of them myself and have a hard time passing them up in thrift stores. I love them! ❤ I recognized some of these you showed us. My grandmother set out relish trays all the time with meals even with sandwiches on Saturdays. My mom did frequently too. They just add a special touch to meals.
Hi Ms Texas! Thanks for watching! The relish tray really does add a special element to the meal and there are so many fun ways to use them. Glad you have some to enjoy!
Omgosh i just saw that green relish tray/deviled egg server at a barn sale today! We all commented on how nifty it is. AND- relish trays encourage the serving of healthy foods! Yum!
OMG!! I received one of those green ones with the devilled egg slots in it for a wedding gift in 1971 and just a few months ago sent it to a thrift shop in a kitchen purge!! That darn thing weighed A TON!!
Hi Heather! Yes, that big green relish tray is heavy! The glass is very thick. From the color I thought it might date from the late 60's or early 70's, so if you got one in 1971 that helps me date it for sure! Thanks!
As someone who is almost 41 I know of these these plates, but to have that moment of understanding of why they used then…transportation was difficult, fresh was expensive and preserved or long lasting fresh was important…it finally clicked. Plus, many of the moms and grandmothers then were still in the food is difficult to come by mode as opposed to the “just head on down for anything you could imagine” mindset of today.
Loved this! Thanks... My family still does a big relish tray for Thanksgiving and Christmas using moms large divided tray from "Occupied Japan" complete with bamboo bale handle. The folks are both gone now so every time it comes out it's like seeing an old friend. Olives - black and green, Pickles - dill, sweet & bread and butter, Radishes, Green onions, Celery with pimento cheese stuffing and Pickled jalapeno pepper halves stuffed with shrimp my fav!
Hi Adrian! So glad to hear that you are still using your mom's relish tray - what a beautiful way to be connected with her at the holidays! And I love the things you put on it! Those pickled jalapeno peppers and shrimp would have my name on them! The stuffed celery, too! Thanks!
Thanks for this fun memory! 1970s and 1980s South Dakota relish tray had veggies of course and also had to have pickled Herring, or at least some sardines or those tiny pickled onions 😀. Thanks again - Ken
Hi Ken! It's interesting how there were regional variations on what would be considered standard relish tray items. The herring or sardines is something we would not have seen here in Michigan, although they were available, but used differently. Thanks!
Still do a relish tray at holiday meals, like mom did - celery, pickles, radishes, black olives. I use a bigger one for burger fixings - lettuce, tomato, onions, pickles, hot peppers. Great idea for presenting sweets at end of meal!
I've been doing "Supper Club Dining at Home" nights a couple of times per month and a relish tray is a key component of this. Carrot and celery sticks, cucumber slices, cherry tomatoes, broccoli and cauliflower florets, crackers, braunschweiger and cheese spreads or cheese slices and summer sausage/pepperoni and a home made dip.
Hi Tom - your idea of "Supper Club Dining at Home" is a wonderful one! And what supper club meal would be complete without a well-stocked relish tray! Yours sound perfect! Thanks!
My mothers egg tray was like the white relish tray with the gold trim. I have no idea who got it. But I have a lot of relish trays I inherited in the early 80s. Used them a lot when younger.
It use to be when one bought dinnerware many companies made Relish trays to match the dinnerware service some also had tiered tray like one would see for high tea luncheon
That's interesting and makes a lot of sense. I wonder if some of the relish trays in my collection came from a dinnerware purchase? Thanks for sharing that information!
Cavalcade of Food I am most definitely sure your dinner had that options under accessories options if you have the brochure pamphlet it would list it. Dinnerware was a big thing back in the days of fine dining or entertainment guests. If you take a look over to eBay or replacements.com look up your dinner service pattern you’ll definitely find it. My Franciscan dinnerware I inherited from my grandmother has one that was sold as an option.
Hi Lenawee Railfan! I'm not surprised that Tupperware had a relish tray - a good idea for when you wanted to take something to a party, picnic, etc. Thanks so much for watching!
I have made it my mission to bring a relish tray to every church function. Childhood memories are my mom had to buy 2 cans of black olives because one would be eaten before she could make the tray.
Id love to be next-door neighbors with this guy. Stop by from time to time and he'd put out a great spread and allow me to indulge myself. I wonder ....
I thought I was the only one who thought those baby carrots were.... meh. :) We prepare a Mexican soup that is served with sides such as finely chopped onions, cilantro, oregano and limes. I use my old relish trays for the condiments and it sure makes the presentation extra special. What a great idea for a video! Jane
Hello my food friends, Kevin and Ralph! I've enjoyed tonight's video so much! Brought back good memories of my Mother's deviled egg/relish trays. While watching this video, I paused it to go into the kitchen and made myself some celery sticks and ranch dressing to snack on. LOL As I've said so many times-Kevin always make his food look so good and tonight I gave in! Love you guys and every video you make for us. Stay well and safe, and happy up there in Croswell, Michigan. PS: Well maybe I had some Lay's potato chips with my Crou de te' also. Now I'm craving some homemade pimento cheese! Blessings to you both! Sending yall lots of virtual hugs and kisses from Georgia. :-)
Hi Princess Skate! We love hearing from you and glad to know that the video got you into the kitchen to make yourself a snack :-) I think potato chips go great with the veggies! Hope all is well with you and yours - sending love to you!!
I am all about the relish tray. My mother had those at every holiday. We even had one that was five compartment that was a Lazy Susan, and the center compartment had a cover. I remember that so well. I still do it now albeit with small individual dishes of pickles and olives etc.. Thanks and I join you in your quest to bring back the relish tray!
Hi John! Thanks for helping to restore the relish tray!! I will do another episode in the future that features the Lazy Susan, another great piece of American tableware. Thanks for watching!
I'm so happy I found your channel. I have a few relish trays. But mine are small or medium size. Now that I see yours that you've added veggies I will be on the look for more!
Lovely, thankyou for the mix YT Happy to just zone - out and watch. Love all that you post, love the variety of kitchens, love the social history and specialised knowledge Kevin, with Ralph, or sister Marianne * sorry if i spelled your name wrong *
Love, love, love these beautiful serving dishes. I have Mother's beauriful deviled egg tray and treasure it. Thank you for sharing your wonderful collection with us. Stay safe, stay mighty!
Thanks, Patsy! It's great that you have your mom's deviled egg tray to cherish - these are things that keep us connected with loved ones. Hope you are safe and well!
That candy tray always came out at Christmas. It was almost like decoration that was out for the whole season. We ate the same candies. don't forget the caramel coconut mounds, bonbons, and nuts. I love the Cavalcade. if I ever get to Michigan i want to see your wonderful collection.
Great subject-the relish tray. Would you like to know more about some of yours? The green Depression Glass one is Cameo pattern. The one next to it with "ears" is Fostoria American pattern. The one with the jardiniere and beets is Imperial Candlewick pattern. American and Candlewick are jewelry store crystal and not from the dime store. Also, Tupperware made a huge tan plastic one with about 8 sections and a covered bowl in the middle for dip and a cover over the entire thing. It's almost too big to fit in the fridge!
Thanks for the information, Jonathan! We just used some of these relish trays for Easter - great for jelly beans and other Easter candy! I've seen that large Tupperware tray a few times at thrift stores but always pass on it because it is so large. Good for veggies/dip, though! Thanks again!
It's been awhile since I've had company over for dinner, and I do have relish trays stored in my 1960's Swedish teak sideboard. Oh I have one of those exact same milk glass trays and it came with a large leaf milk glass that I guess is a candy dish.
I hope you are thinking about doing an episode featuring fresh garden tomatoes since it's getting to the peak of tomato season. Maybe an episode about making and canning homemade spaghetti sauce or maybe even just plain tomato sauce? Just a suggestion... take care!!
Hi Greg! Great idea! The tomatoes are just starting to come in here in Michigan. I've put up pickles of all kind, but have never canned pasta sauce or tomatoes. Will have to see what is involved. And there are many wonderful dishes to make with fresh tomatoes - nothing like the flavor of the home grown stuff! Thanks!
Another great video Kevin!! Thank you. I really like relish trays and and I have about 4 or 5. I don't use them nearly enough... thanks for the reminder. Have a great weekend. ~kendra
Hey, relished your show, as always! But, a little surprised that a dishware -- the olive boat -- was not included in your presentation? Maybe they aren't from the time-period you're representing? I've only become aware of them late in life, but find them to be a fun form of service. Thanks!
Hi tveyeonyou! Glad you enjoyed looking at the relish trays, but there wasn't an olive boat as I don't have one in my collection! I've seen plenty of new ones, but haven't yet run across any vintage examples. Hope to add one to the collection some day. Thanks!
Please write a cook book. You have to give a wounderful book to remind us of you and your book so we can remind us of you. I d love to sit down to and talk you have and help.I i know your knowledge.
You're right the carrots you peel and cut yourself ARE better tasting! The "baby" carrots are just carrots that have been shaved down shaped into a smaller shape. They aren't actually baby(young)carrots at all. Love your channel.
Wish I had my mother’s tray from the 60’s. When people offered to bring something, she’d just say “relish tray” and she placed the dish on the dinner table
I just love this channel. My great aunts always had us over and they always had a relish tray, a small one. With home made pickles and sometimes something else with the pickles. That was back when a salad for the course consisted of iceberg lettuce with a pineapple ring topped with mayonnaise. Which was excellent. I have a few and love them and use them!
Growing up relish trays were used for special occasions. If they came out you got excited
Hi Cindy! You knew it was a party if there was a relish tray! Thanks for watching!
Love it! No family get-together was complete without a relish tray: carrots, celery, green onions in spring, broccoli, red pepper, cauliflower all cut up with a dip in the middle and a few trays of beets, pickled eggs, olives, and pickles. You're welcome! I'll be your grandma's chow-chow was great! I haven't had that in many years!
I won't set a holiday table without a wonderful relish tray.
Hi Julie! I agree - the relish tray is a must!
Stay well!
You are absolutely charming says this Detroit-born Pacific Northwest transplant of over 40 years. You remind of home. Thank you.
@@CC-.-.-.-. Thanks! I have that cookbook! Many great recipes in there! I'll look for the Gum Drop squares recipe. Thanks so much!
My daughter in law and I love relish dishes too! I have many that belonged to my mom and grandma. My mom often gave a relish dish from Hudson’s for a wedding present. Love this topic!
Hi Peggy! Getting a relish tray that came from J.L.Hudson's was a special gift! Glad you're a relish tray fan, too! Thanks!
that green glass with the deviled egg spaces is BEAUTIFUL!
Thanks! That green relish tray weighs about 5 lbs!
Great memories glad it's making a comeback
Thanks, Earl - hope all is well!
Hi Jody! So glad you're still making up relish trays! They add so much to the holiday table! The olive fingers are always fun for the kids!
You brought up a great memory when you mentioned Kresge's, my favorite. My grandma took me every Saturday and we ate in the kresge's cafeteria. Definitely brings back many holiday memories...always a staple on our family’s tables...loved those sweet little gherkins 😁
Hi Lady Thyme! I'm with you on the sweet gherkins! So good! Thanks for watching!
This post is a beautiful thing
Thanks, JD Stencel! Glad you enjoyed it!
And I relish this new video! Thank You ,Kevin & Ralph!

Kevin, I have never been so happy to find a channel on TH-cam like yours.

I'm really enjoying your presentations. I would enjoy seeing vintage cheeseball dishes 😋
Hi Corrinna - I will have to make a cheeseball for the holidays. Thanks!
@@cavalcadeoffood Please do!! Thanks in advance!🙂
I still make relish trays & everyone loves them! My Mom always made a relish tray too! 1980's too!
Hi Lucy! So glad you are keeping the relish tray tradition alive and well!!
The relish tray is a beautiful delicious thing...💯✔️
I agree - thanks for watching!

Hi Merideth Lynn! So glad to hear you use and enjoy your relish dishes! They are wonderful for entertaining!
Classic. It was mandatory in the 70s for entertaining at home. I haven't seen them since though
Thanks, Thomas!
I love relish trays. You just don't see much of that anymore. I always put one out during a nice big dinner party or for a big summer bbq.
Hi Daniel! Glad to meet another fan of the relish tray! Thanks!
WOW. Talk about a blast from the past. I wish I could come. I would bring a relish tray. Love your style! Love it when you say who wouldn’t like this !

I love your videos! First one in awhile huh? I love to look back at lovely traditions. I love love your vintage housewares!!

I remember going to Rose's 5&10 cent stores. They were similar to Woolworths, just lots of fun.
I agree, full size carrots. I can eat and enjoy all your choices.
Hi Sky TV - the full size carrots taste more like carrots, don't they? Thanks for watching!

LOVVV this show, pretty food! Lov relish trays before the meal!! Thanks for this. YES Bring Fancy Back!
Hi Ms Howell! Thanks so much - relish trays are great!

Id love to be next-door neighbors with this guy. Stop by from time to time and he'd put out a great spread and allow me to indulge myself. I wonder ....
I still do relish tray with holiday and special family meals. My trays are glass, picked up along the years.
Hi Evelyn! Doesn't the relish tray help make the meal special? So glad you are using yours! Thanks!
Jane
Hi Jane! Love how you use your relish tray - a great idea and I know it must look wonderful! Thanks!
Love your show especially how you start each episode
Thank you so much!
My relish tray is oblong with no divider... so I use it to serve sliced tomatoes. It's perfect.
I love, love, love this video!!!! I love relish dishes to my heart!
Nice to meet another relish tray fan, Mama Louise!! Thanks!
Hello my food friends, Kevin and Ralph! I've enjoyed tonight's video so much! Brought back good memories of my
Mother's deviled egg/relish trays.
I have one like that! Chrome lazy susan and lid for the round center dish. Pressed glass containers. Party time!
Hi John! Thanks for helping to restore the relish tray!! I will do another episode in the future that features the Lazy Susan, another great piece of American tableware. Thanks for watching!
Those chrome ones are beautiful!
wmalden with my mother’s, the lazy Susan was chrome but the dishes on it were pressed clear glass. The cover was also chrome.
I'm so happy I found your channel. I have a few relish trays. But mine are small or medium size. Now that I see yours that you've added veggies I will be on the look for more!
Hi Sandra - I'm glad you found us, too! Hope you find some relish trays - there's lots of them out there!
Finally a new episode you should have add the lazy susan with this video
Hi RugbyFootballer! I'm going to do an episode in the future that is just about Lazy Susans. Thanks for watching!
Lovely, thankyou for the mix YT
Happy to just zone - out and watch.
Love all that you post, love the variety of kitchens, love the social history and specialised knowledge Kevin, with Ralph, or sister Marianne * sorry if i spelled your name wrong *
Thanks so much, Lauren! And yes, you spelled Marianne's name correctly!
Watch all your videos! Really enjoy you and Ralph so much. 🤗
Thank you so much, Janet! Glad you enjoy the videos!
I have all three colors of the green deviled egg one. Plus many others!
Hi Stacey! How cool - that is a beautiful relish tray (and heavy!)
Hi Fred! That old time candy is so good and perfect to put out during the holidays! Thanks so much!
I'm absolutely loving the new videos!!!
Thanks, Dale! Glad you're enjoying the videos!
I love this channel. Love love love.
Thank you, Lillian! Appreciate you watching!
I have the milk glass one you showed. 😊
Great video!!
Thanks for watching, Robert!
I love this video
Thanks Miss Katz! Glad you enjoyed the episode!
It's been awhile since I've had company over for dinner, and I do have relish trays stored in my 1960's Swedish teak sideboard. Oh I have one of those exact same milk glass trays and it came with a large leaf milk glass that I guess is a candy dish.
Hi ShalimarPerfume! Hopefully you can break out one of your relish trays and use them again. Thanks for watching!
@@cavalcadeoffood Maybe I'll reinvent one or two for taco/movie night. LOL. BTW I also have an old cut glass Rose relish jar.
You're both awesome! Great idea about the candy.
Hi John! Thanks so much - glad you liked the video!
@@cavalcadeoffood My pleasure. Is there a collection of deviled egg plates too?
@@johnfennelly325 Actually, I have a few egg plates! Not as many as relish trays, but I might haul them out when we do a Deviled Egg video. Thanks!
I still make a relish tray every Thanksgiving
Glad you're keeping the relish tray tradition going!! Thanks!
~kendra
Hi mdeporres19! Sounds like you have a nice collection of relish trays! Thanks for watching!
Love using the relish tray for candy!!! 🤗
Hi Janet! It's always a hit at dessert time! Thanks!
If it's available in your area try the blue cheese stuffed olives
Hi Earl - I've seen them in the stores and will have to give them a try because I love blue cheese and olives! Thanks!
I grew up outside Buffalo, NY and remember a restaurant that always brought a relish tray to your table! I love your kitchen, is that your home?
Hi Alison! Thanks so much for watching! This isn't my home, it's a kitchen studio I built in my appliance museum.
Thanks, Peggie!
Wish I had my mother’s tray from the 60’s. When people offered to bring something, she’d just say “relish tray” and she placed the dish on the dinner table
Thanks, gmlyla - a relish tray was always a nice addition to the table!
your whole layout looks just like the holidays
Thanks so much!
Goodwill :)
Hi wickster! I always see relish trays at the Goodwill stores!
Yes, nor only are they still made tons of them, Walmart, Target, go to any Goodwill. They practically giethem away
Yes, I see them often. Thanks!
Something is funky with either the camera or upload file. Odd artifacts on Kevin’s face and head towards the end.
Hi wmalden. I see what you mean - not sure what happened to the file - I'll see if I can replace and try again. Thanks for watching.
Made a comment on your relish tray video, but it ended up on your electric skillet video,
Hi Janice! Not sure how that happened, but I see it! Hope all is well with you!
Team “real carrot” 🥕
Thanks, Anthony! Keeping it real is best!
Please my mom and I still put them out when we entertain.
Glad to know you enjoy using your relish trays - thanks!
Just wondering if you guys take donations ?
Hi MrDirtrider777. I don't have room for much more, so it depends on the item. Thanks so much for watching!
❤️👍
Thanks, Janie!
Like regular carrots better too
Hi Bambi! Don't the regular carrots taste better? Thanks for watching!
@@cavalcadeoffood Yes they do. I think the minis are made from imperfect large carrots.
Welcome to Taiwan when the epidemic is over
This would be great but by God you talk
Yes, I do talk - this is what being a teacher for 25+ years will have you doing :-)
