A Trail of Hope does stay for as long as you need it to. None of the main quests "time out." You will eventually hit a point though where you will run out of side quests that can be done (i.e. they will go "on hold" waiting for you to advance the main quest). These "on hold" notices will occur for side quests that are intended to thread through the entire game, but they won't time out either with a couple of exceptions, that do lock out if you enter the endgamee without doing them. These, of course, do impact the ending; that it, the ending changes depending on whether or not they are completed. BTW, initially, both Havarl and Voeld are listed as priority missions, but after you do the mission on one of those planets, the mission on the other becomes a side quest. This is the only instance of a priority op reverting to a side quest that I can think of.
