  • Hookworm, a disease prevalent in developing nations in the tropics, was thought to have been eradicated from the US in the earlier part of the 20th century. But according to a recent study from the Baylor College of Tropical Medicine, it's making a comeback in rural Alabama where proper human waste disposal is hard to come by. VICE News goes to Lowndes County with the authors of the prior study who are going back to expand their search and focus on affected children.

But growing up here, we were always taught to never go outside barefoot, because that's how you get worms. Some people still do it anyways. I now live in the suburbs of a city in the north. We have sewers and no sewage issues whatsoever. Turns out my dog just got hookworms and he's an indoor dog. It just goes to show you how bad a problem it is here. And it wont change anytime soon. I live in an area of Alabama exactly like this. Our community is very rural and does not have access to public utilities, such as water and sewage, because they are not available. Although our community is middle-class, other communities nearby aren't. I am now going to explain this in more detail.
    - Why we dont have public utilities: We do not have city water and sewage in rural Alabama because of the population density. Between each house in this part of Alabama, there is at least 1-2 miles of timberland. Therefor, it would not make sense for the government to provide these utilities because it would be completely uneconomical. Instead, everyone in rural Alabama uses septic tanks and water wells.
    - Wells and poor sanitation: Without a proper septic tank, sewage is going to soak into our aquifers. This will contaminant your water well and your water supply. Many people in the rural areas of Alabama live like this and this will happen to them. I can completely agree that this is common throughout rural Alabama. I also do not think that this problem can be fixed easily, as city-sponsored sewers are economically unfeasible. Electing any one certain party to office here is not going to instantly fix the problem either.
    -It’s about resources: The need for some sort of proper rural sanitation in this area is apparent. However, the resources aren’t available. The scale of these areas and the distance between homes is immense. I agree that it would take an incredible amount of funds for a rural county-wide sanitation system to be completed. I believe that it is hard for someone who has never truly experienced life here to comprehend how we live in the rural South.Homes are at least 1-2 miles away from each other and towns aren’t big enough to sustain utilities that stretch in the countryside. The funds are not available locally or statewide to invest in such large and costly projects. I think that the funds would have to come from the federal level.
    - These living conditions: These living conditions are common in certain areas of Alabama. Other areas are more wealthy. I will not get into the explanation of this though as it is beyond my point.
    -The "worms" in the water: Those worms in the water, were mosquito larvae. I know that because we have those in Alabama. Who could have guessed mosquito would be everywhere in a rural area with humid climate. The only way to prevent this, is not have standing water. It does not matter if the standing water is sewage-free or not, it will have mosquitoes. My privately-owned pond, which is miles away from any road or structure, has these larvae. Mosquito larvae are just part of the ecosystem here.
    -Parasites: Parasites are quite common here because of the climate. Today (29 December 2018), it is 75 with 80% humidity. The winters aren't cold enough to kill the parasites. This is completely natural and is comparable to places such as the Amazon Rainforest or African Savannahs.
    - Alabama as a whole: Just like any other state, there are poor areas and wealthy areas in Alabama. Just like any other state, there are third-world areas and areas that are not. This video was created in one of the poorest counties in Alabama. I do not think that Alabama can be judged as a whole based on this video and the area that they are showing.

    • @mozardthebest
      @mozardthebest 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @S C You realize that 20 percent of households in the U.S. rely on septic systems.
      "I’ve stood in towns in the Dakotas"
      And? This guy above you clearly talked about environment being ripe for these conditions, and the Dakotas are a lot less humid, and their soil is a lot less rich than Alabama.

    • @josephboone6634
      @josephboone6634 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      S C In this region, skeptics ranks are more expensive due to the soil. That extra expense also applies to other types of underground construction, such as sewers.
      Also, people live differently in places like the Dakotas. People live clustered together in towns. Those towns may be 10s of miles from each other and no one lives in the region between them. That is why the population density average is technically lower. However, here in Alabama people do not necessarily cluster around towns, making the average population density higher. This means that there are many people spread evenly over massive areas. It would simply not be economical by any means to provide public utilities to these areas.

    I have lived in Alabama now under one year and I continue to be astounded at how poorly developed and sadly behind this Red conservative state is.
    Among the things I’m shocked by is how poor education is (a 24 year person in 2018 should have had plenty of opportunities in an education system to learn basic computer skills such as typing); how conservative lawmakers concentrate on uber conservative (and utterly pointless) measures on by adding useless amendments on ballots (such as amending the state constitution to require the post of the Christian Ten Commandments in classrooms); don’t even get me started on how deficient their health care is.
    This state needs major reforms and needs higher federal oversight. It’s no mystery why it’s easy to sell lowly educated folks the idea of “less/smaller government” and why they want it this way-to divert money to conservative efforts and their own paychecks and keep the population impoverished.

    • @mozardthebest
      @mozardthebest 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I don't really know why you should be surprised. Alabama hasn't been developed until relatively recently, and is catching up to the rest of the country.
      The problem with comments like these is
      1. It equates Alabama/southern states to third world (factually untrue)
      2. It assumes that these problems started yesterday
      3. It never stops to think that conditions are consistently improving all around the country and in Alabama as well

    • @nicawi46

      mozardthebest mozardthebest
      - I lived in a third world country for 11 years. I have lived and worked in rural Alabama. I observe many similarities though I acknowledge it is not totally the same. One example is that people who are starving in third world countries can’t count on much help; where as in Alabama many people used an EBT program-unfortunately, it’s one of those programs that many conservative Alabama politicians would like to cut funding for even though many of their constituents benefit from it.
      - I don’t assume the problem started yesterday. I’m just astounded at how different it is compared to other states. I guess it’s a slower-progressing state. As an outsider now on the inside, it is very blatant how repressive policies have contributed to it’s slow development.

    • @mozardthebest
      @mozardthebest 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@nicawi46 Well, I don't agree that Alabama is "different", compared to the rest of the country. What is so different about it? What makes Alabama sepcial? Is poverty only in Alabama? Obviously not. Does Alabama have the worst poverty in the country? This county has it bad, but I've seen areas in California that are arguably worst. And of course the Indian reservations are no paradise either.
      I'm also an outsider, born and raised in the City of New York, which has its own problems with poverty, don't get me wrong. But things are often never as simple as "repressive policies", whatever you mean by that. I'm simply trying to keep things more nuanced in the discussion, and avoid being hyperbolic. I live in Venice Florida and looking to build a house , the Health Department is making put an Aerobic Treatment Unit "ATU" , it's similar to a septic system , they are used when the septic system is too close to the wells and doesnt meet the 75ft septic to well rule or the soil conditions arent good for drainage like in this video. The cost can be fro $10k to $20k . If i want to build a house i have to pay for this myself, not the county not the taxpayers but me . Sewer and city water is available 100 feet away but it's on me to hook up to it and get an easement at a cost of $25,000 again on me since the residents of South Venice dont want to have to pay $10,000 each to collectively connect to a central sewer and county water . This is the problem they have in Alabama , for them to connect to a Central Sewer it means billions in infrastrcuture into this rural areas, the only solution is an "ATU" system that needs lifetime maintenance and cost $15,000 which can be paid longterm to the county if they provide the service to the landowners but then you have the problem of maintenance which stuff will break like pumps etc .

    Holy shit, I'm from Laos, we don't live in our own sewage like this. I feel bad for these folks, but I'm not sure being poor is an excuse for this level of lack of hygiene. Dig a deep hole far enough from where you live, and shit in that. I grew up with no running water, or any plumbing of any kind, and my mom wouldn't even let me pee near the house, if I took a shit in the yard I don't even know what she would do.

      If you only own a small patch of land, and have no liquid capital to acquire more I'm not sure a local farmer or business owner in AL is gonna take kindly to digging holes and shitting on their land, or on state-run land such as roadways. I imagine the situation in Laos is a little more freewheeling, and notions of "rural" don't translate.

    I knew two people who had sewage running in their yards. A church campgrounds had all its bathrooms piped to creeks and the lake. I used to play in it! Its illegal but contractors in the middle of no where don't care.

    how is it NOT the home owners' responsibility to ensure they are hooked to some form of waste catchment, either municipal or their own septic system that they are responsible for? It shouldn't be any different now than it was 75-80 years ago. dig a hole put an outhouse on top. when it's full, move it or have it emptied. How is this even happening in the United States of America?! It's beyond shameful. Just going to have a yard full of shit because i don't want to do anything about it? the town/county/state needs to step up and fix this literal shit.

  • @Ramdodge582

    it's your septic system, fix it! all the county can do is shut the place down and approve septic designs/installations.

      If you can afford to move from Seattle, you most likely wouldn't settle in a mudhole trailer park. It's cool though. Probably wouldn't fit in, anyway.
