Its the negative smart ass comments that are really disheartening. Atleast hes down in the stall trying to teach something to someone, not piled up in a recliner watching reruns of Emergency. Its alot of what's wrong with today's fire service, negative criticism...pointing fingers tearing each other down when we should be building each other up...sharing whatever knowledge we may think we have. Ive had so many rookies come out of school with little to no confidence in there ability to do the job because they are too worried about the repercussions of messing up and looking stupid. I personally know this guy...young yes...but a Great Dude..Great Fireman....Keep up the good work.
Good tips, but I think the most important point you made was understated.... What ever you do, do it the same every time! That is how you become professional. I personally have a long leather chinstrap that has a custom button to a set length so I don't have a "Tardtail" lol. and when I mask up I us my left hand to drape the chin strap over so the helmet is like a purse (yeah I know, insert comment here) and mask up and the left hand holds the chin strap in place to it clears my mask etc. That way is very common in my department, a major advantage is we can mask up while walking up the line or to the point of entry. Multi tasking helps us be very aggressive interior attack. Again, pick what you like and perfect it!

I've always left mine connected and pull the strap over my mask by holding the helmet strap at the bottom and pulling it under the mask then placing the helmet on top of my head. Its simple, it works and you never have the hassle of trying to make that connection while under duress.
I leave mine connected and after masking up and putting my helmet on I pull the strap over my mask and pull the tab down and velcro. IU've never had an issue finding the tab with my glove.
I keep mine around the back because I am used to grabbing back there when masking up. I know they say don’t keep it behind the crown but I do cause it is just easy for me

I used an old leather New Yorker with a Bourke eyeshield without a chinstrap for almost twenty-five years. Never had a problem with it falling off my noggin, probably because of my fat head (heh!). I knew it wasn't compliant and all, but I got away with it. But I also had to use one of those newer polycarbonate helmets for a time too when we got new bunker gear.
Well thankfully I dont have to worry about a chin strap since my helmet has an adjustable hard hat like " strap system " in it so all I have to do is turn the knob in the back of the helmet to tighten it or loosen it and if you would like to know what station I am in , its Little Creek Volunteer Fire Company .
I always tilt the helmet forward when putting the helmet on, then pull it back. You're adding an extra step with this strap deal. anytime you're working hard, wearing an scba or not, you should be wearing a chinstrap so you don't drop that heavy ass east coast style helmet on someone else, or just look like john wayne or indiana jones. - Look good, don't be a bitch, and don't get lost. Stay safe boys.
Because in a fire with a pack on and a tool in hand in the dark it’s always easy to get a wedge out of your pocket...with a gloved hand....oh absolutely...it never becomes a shit show at all.

It is a good one off guide for firefighter interview tips without the headache. Ive heard some pretty good things about it and my cousin after a lifetime of fighting got astronomical results with it.
Probably asked for the saltiest helmet the dept had so he looks like a seasoned veteran. Kid probably hasn't worked a legit working fire. Get some experience. Also you can tell he's only worked one fire he only references the porch 😂🤣.

I don't unbuckle my chin strap.. Leave it lose and set it on your pack, mask up bring it back onto your head and tighten it

it's a Sam Houston helmet made by Cairns and brother. it's leather. a metro style helmet is more round. it's called traditional not metro.
