For the Namek Saga "I'm sorry that's a new one." is my absolute favorite call back. Freeza hearing a Line he didn't have a count for stopping him dead in his tracks and making him drop Vegeta (with a bonus, quiet 'oww...' from Vegeta as he smacks the ground).
I love how "that's a new one" is a call back to the speech count and "I'mma deck you in the schnoz" has never been uttered to him, but "F*** your face" has.
I like to think Vegeta was just so desprate to think of a name he just looked at Dendes most prominent features... Being small and Green and the name being what Krillen called him was a total coincidence lol

A strict reading of toriyama's interviews at the time of the Cell Games are that the numbers were created explicitely to mock the people who cared too much about who was stronger than who, then they got away from him a bit.

I think the issue is that Toriyama is fundamentally a comedy writer, but during DBZ he was pressured more and more to be serious. Maybe that's part of what makes DBZA so good: its more like what DBZ should have been.
I love Freiza going, "I'm sorry that's a new one" Because earlier he had a count for all the generic hero lines "You'll never get away with this," or "We've come to stop you" or any of the other cliched lines and yet nobody has ever gone "I'm gonna deck you in the schnozz" to someone so evil. Hell that's the whole point of the Kaioken at that point. "Oh your power level is dreadful! way you just doubled it, how?" Power levels work best when they exist to subvert the villain's expectations. I think the problem most people have is that for some reason the audience got really attached to them in the whole playground discussions of "who would win in a fight, x or y?" and then just started playing them "seriously" by the time Broly shows up. I definitely think Dragon Ball as a whole works best when you remember that Toriyama is a gag writer and that a significant portion of choices being made are for comedy.
It did not become an audience problem after the Vegeta fight, because every opponent on Namek WAS beaten by "oh no, we have to make our number bigger than their number!" Like, power levels DID matter in the story, the only way to beat Zarbon, the Ginyus, and Freeza was to best their numbers with the heroes' numbers, the audience didn't do that.
I think it's more the fact that, as gokinyu said, "haha, you don't know anything about my techniques". put it this way: if a scouter read a 50,000,000W L.A.S.E.R.'s lightbulb, it would read 25,000W...

"Power levels are bullshit" is the universal phrase that has gotten me through MANY Dragonball Z conversations. As someone who ONLY knows DBZA, I've found a way to figure out how to SOUND like I know what I'm talking about, while really only knowing a fraction of the facts

Yeah, *THAT* is the bullshit part. So is Goku getting 10 times stronger AND getting to 100 times gravity in basically that same span of time. But the system of Power Levels itself? Nah, it's not actually that bad at all.

3:12 Actually it's kinda the opposite. Toriyama didn't decide Super Saiyan 2 was different from super saiyan 1 for a while, or at least he didn't say it. It wasn't a named form for a long while and it used to be called something like "super saiyan final form". It only got named when Goku goes super saiyan 3 for the first time. When he goes "this is super saiyan 1, and this is super saiyan 2". This is the first ever time it's named super saiyan 2 and it's probably only to make super saiyan 3 more clear. Before that point though, super saiyan 2 was never named and thus might actually have been just a mastered form of the super saiyan in Toriyama's mind Edit: As it turns out, I didn't get the right reference on what Taka was saying, my bad
No, he's talking about relatively recently. He actually forgot about Super Sayain 2, WELL after Z ended. The man forgets a lot about DragonBall. There's a famous interview with Toriyama and Oda. At one point, Oda mentioned he practiced drawing Taopaipai's hands, Toriyama mentioned forgetting "such a minor character." He unironically forgot who he was.
I think the quote they are referencing is when Toriyama couldn't remember if in a certain scene a character was supposed to be Super Saiyan 1 or Super Saiyan 2 because the hair style was too similar. In the anime it's pretty hard to tell on Vegeta, for example, unless the whole electricity aura is involved.

The best part of Goku vs Frieza is that we've spent all this time building up Frieza's menace and witty insults. So when Goku comes and completely throws him off it's all the more satisfying.
I still think Piccolo vs 3rd form Freeza would've been a great point for Piccolo to reveal he had Kaioken too. ....Just for it to come up short, but do just well enough for Freeza to say "screw it" and go into his final form. Then Vegeta could still have his antics with getting a hole blown in him and then healed to face final form Freeza. Nothing really changes in the Freeza saga, but long-term, Piccolo has a tool to help him keep up more with the Saiyans and he doesn't end up nearly as powercrept out later on.
It also would have allowed Piccolo to get that hit in on Frieza's fourth form with the combination of rest, Gohan and Krillins energy, and a Kaoken x5-10. In fact, I think he's better suited for the Kaoken, Namekians have appear to have a talent for drawing in excessive energy. He was always better at ki manipulation than Goku.
@@saphcal Yeah, I forgot how short a time he was on King Kai's planet, so no Kaioken on Namek. He still should've had it by the time the Androids showed up. 3 years training with the only canon mortal in the universe that knows the technique and he doesn't learn it, it's a pretty big oversight from Toriyama.

Even Kaio-sama himself can't use it. Goku isn't the only mortal who can use it, he's the only being in existence period who can.
To me the intro to the Cell arc shows Toriyama's disposition the best, you have Trunks' arrival, arguably one of the best moments in shonen manga history, not only in the cool factor department, but because of how well it worked narratively, creating tension and expectation in a bombastic manner. Then, that moment is IMMEDIATELY followed by some of the worst writing I've ever seen in my life. And that's how Toriyama always works, it's hit or miss, the highs are astronomical but the lows are abysmal, and there's no balance anywhere.

Toriyama latet comes along and due to V/B japanese shenanigans thinks its a pun on Beer and then created Whis to go along with said name pun and then the alcohol name puns carried over to the rests of the Gods of Destructions and Angels

A strict reading of toriyama's interviews at the time of the Cell Games are that the numbers were created explicitely to mock the people who cared too much about who was stronger than who, then they got away from him a bit.

I think the issue is that Toriyama is fundamentally a comedy writer, but during DBZ he was pressured more and more to be serious. Maybe that's part of what makes DBZA so good: its more like what DBZ should have been.

I thnk the scouters work for people who can't manipulate energy, but they are immediately pointed out as unreliable when radits gets to earth and scans goku while he's making a kamehameha, because goku still has pleanty of energy after unleashing "all of his energy concentrated to a single point"
Hell that's the whole point of the Kaioken at that point. "Oh your power level is dreadful! way you just doubled it, how?" Power levels work best when they exist to subvert the villain's expectations.
I think the problem most people have is that for some reason the audience got really attached to them in the whole playground discussions of "who would win in a fight, x or y?" and then just started playing them "seriously" by the time Broly shows up.
I definitely think Dragon Ball as a whole works best when you remember that Toriyama is a gag writer and that a significant portion of choices being made are for comedy.
It did not become an audience problem after the Vegeta fight, because every opponent on Namek WAS beaten by "oh no, we have to make our number bigger than their number!"
Like, power levels DID matter in the story, the only way to beat Zarbon, the Ginyus, and Freeza was to best their numbers with the heroes' numbers, the audience didn't do that.
I think it's more the fact that, as gokinyu said, "haha, you don't know anything about my techniques". put it this way: if a scouter read a 50,000,000W L.A.S.E.R.'s lightbulb, it would read 25,000W...
Vegeta also points out to Nappa that their scans of the earth warriors are inaccurate because they can suppress their power levels. Yet the fans always carry on "bUt tHE sCoUtEr SAiD kRiLLiN iS oNLy 600"

I absolutely adore TFS’s reasons for the heroes letting the villains power up. From Piccolo being distracted by Nail to Goku saying “I want an actual challenge” against Android 13, to Vegeta fighting Trunks so Cell can eat 18. It’s so good.

There's nothing wrong with the power levels themselves it's how strong Piccolo got in Vegeta's perspective

But dialogue seems to imply that Piccolo actually got *at least* somewhere close to if not stronger than Nail's level through training with King Kai for like. . . . a week at best? Yeah, *THAT* is the bullshit part.
So is Goku getting 10 times stronger AND getting to 100 times gravity in basically that same span of time.
But the system of Power Levels itself? Nah, it's not actually that bad at all.

3:12 Actually it's kinda the opposite. Toriyama didn't decide Super Saiyan 2 was different from super saiyan 1 for a while, or at least he didn't say it. It wasn't a named form for a long while and it used to be called something like "super saiyan final form". It only got named when Goku goes super saiyan 3 for the first time. When he goes "this is super saiyan 1, and this is super saiyan 2". This is the first ever time it's named super saiyan 2 and it's probably only to make super saiyan 3 more clear. Before that point though, super saiyan 2 was never named and thus might actually have been just a mastered form of the super saiyan in Toriyama's mind

No, he's talking about relatively recently. He actually forgot about Super Sayain 2, WELL after Z ended. The man forgets a lot about DragonBall. There's a famous interview with Toriyama and Oda. At one point, Oda mentioned he practiced drawing Taopaipai's hands, Toriyama mentioned forgetting "such a minor character." He unironically forgot who he was.

I think the quote they are referencing is when Toriyama couldn't remember if in a certain scene a character was supposed to be Super Saiyan 1 or Super Saiyan 2 because the hair style was too similar. In the anime it's pretty hard to tell on Vegeta, for example, unless the whole electricity aura is involved.

I love that Frieza, who has a game where he counts the number of times he's heard certain phrases from heroes, is immediately surprised by Goku who hits him with the never-before-heard "Imma deck ya in the schnoz!" Really sets up how Goku is unlike anything Frieza had encountered before

The best part of Goku vs Frieza is that we've spent all this time building up Frieza's menace and witty insults. So when Goku comes and completely throws him off it's all the more satisfying.

Sometimes leaving such things unknown is better than anything anyone could ever create.
The jockstrap incident is best left unexplained. The mystery is much better than whatever they could possibly come up with.
I still think Piccolo vs 3rd form Freeza would've been a great point for Piccolo to reveal he had Kaioken too. ....Just for it to come up short, but do just well enough for Freeza to say "screw it" and go into his final form. Then Vegeta could still have his antics with getting a hole blown in him and then healed to face final form Freeza.
Nothing really changes in the Freeza saga, but long-term, Piccolo has a tool to help him keep up more with the Saiyans and he doesn't end up nearly as powercrept out later on.
It also would have allowed Piccolo to get that hit in on Frieza's fourth form with the combination of rest, Gohan and Krillins energy, and a Kaoken x5-10. In fact, I think he's better suited for the Kaoken, Namekians have appear to have a talent for drawing in excessive energy. He was always better at ki manipulation than Goku.
he didnt train with King Kai at all and wasn't even on King Kai's planet for very long at all. There's no way he could have learned it.
@@saphcal Yeah, I forgot how short a time he was on King Kai's planet, so no Kaioken on Namek. He still should've had it by the time the Androids showed up. 3 years training with the only canon mortal in the universe that knows the technique and he doesn't learn it, it's a pretty big oversight from Toriyama.
@@BreitheNua its really not an oversight at all. him (toriyama) deciding no one else will get it isnt an oversight. Goku being unable to teach it is totally a plausible explanation. Even Kaio-sama himself can't use it. Goku isn't the only mortal who can use it, he's the only being in existence period who can.

To me the intro to the Cell arc shows Toriyama's disposition the best, you have Trunks' arrival, arguably one of the best moments in shonen manga history, not only in the cool factor department, but because of how well it worked narratively, creating tension and expectation in a bombastic manner. Then, that moment is IMMEDIATELY followed by some of the worst writing I've ever seen in my life. And that's how Toriyama always works, it's hit or miss, the highs are astronomical but the lows are abysmal, and there's no balance anywhere.

Tbh, I've always loved how free-form Toriyama's writing is, it's what got me into the series. I think his writing style is perfectly okay to have, and even quite fun to watch play out, we just need to stop taking it so fucking seriously. If you're a fan of Dragonball be more like Toriyama.
