2015 KIA Sedona Review: The Unminivan for those who need but don't want a Minivan

  • ( www.TFLcar.com ) The 2015 KIA Sedona is a Minivan. Let's be clear about this fact but of course since minivans are so uncool today KIA has decided to keep this fact on the down low. But as Emme recently found out the 2015 KIA Sedona is a pretty useful and affordable car for those who definitely don't want but in fact need a minivan.

    My 2007 Kia Sedona has the same "manual" shift ability and it really comes in use when driving down some mountains (we went to Colorado and Wyoming in it).

      My thoughts exactly!!! The same here! I can't live without the manual shifting option in any of my cars. The place I live has a lot of inclines and slopes. I hate to wait for the transmission to downshift every time I need to go up or down a hill, mostly when my vehicle is fully loaded.

    The main reason you would want to shift our hills. Yes it helps to shift down when going down hills to slow down and to save your brakes. Passing , down shift to to go up hills at times can be a nice feature as well.

    I happened to have driven this mini van with my cousin last month!! In order for this "MPV's auto tail gate function to work, it needs to be programmed/turned on from the dash display controls; the manual shift option helps the van to lock into a lower gear for more power when going up a steeper hill and/or while towing something uphill...Emme needs to tow the vehicle well enough to comment on it !! A fun review, but it wasn't really a helpful one.

    The manual mode is kind of nice to have in snow or in the mountains. It probably only has it because the transmission is used elsewhere. There is no reason to write special code or design a special shifter to remove the manual shift feature (which seems to be standard fare on most cars these days anyway).

    No rear seat DVD player? boo hoo. I think it's pretty sad that nowadays we can't even go to the toilet without being connected to the internet and updating our status on Facebook. So, your kids are on their phones, computers, game consoles, and then when you need to go for a short drive with you (and let's face it, we rarely drive for longer than 30 minutes), the kids can't stand still for 30 mins and talk with their parents, or just admire the outside world?
    I agree it'd be fun for long interstate trips, but on a regular basis? Big deal!?

    I took 2015 Sedona EX for a test drive right after I test drove Odyssey EX-L. Here's what I noticed:
    Odyssey is roomier and has more space in the 3r row and trunk. Includes moon/sun roof, nice electronics come standard in this trim. Drives smooth, quick gear shifts, very pleasant to be in - loved it.
    Sedona EX - the seats felt stiff, not so much space as in Odyssey, center screen and controls look dated. But once we started it up and drove it - wow! The thing is very smooth, quiet and fun to drive. Sedona is a fun van to drive. The seats turned out to be perfect with heating. The sound system in EX trim sounded muffled compared to Odyssey EX-L.
    I'd have to go with Sedona SX-L to get the moon and sunroof, better stereo and bigger screen. It ends up more expensive $43.000 than Odyssey EX-L - $36,500. Odyssey wins for my needs. Loved driving both

    Re: Manumatic
    I'll give you 2 reasons:
    1) Long (mountain) downhill engine braking. Much better than burning the brakes !
    2) Building revs in anticipation of acceleration burst
    Disclaimer : I recently bought a 2016 SXL. All my previous cars were manual.

    • @gregsolovieff6711
      @gregsolovieff6711 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      David Harris She asked “Why?”, I ask “Why not” have a manumatic trans.? It gives you more options for ways to drive the car, & if you really wanna dust the competition in a stop lite derby, use the manual option. I find the 2017 Sedona SXL to be plenty fast, even in eco mode using full automatic shifting.0-60 time is 7.4 seconds per Car & Driver. “Slow” my ass! (Top end is 122 & it’ll cruise effortlessly at 100. )

    Other reviewers have addressed most of the factual errors/omissions in this review, but to summarize:
    - Automatic tailgate needs to be activated in the settings menu, which is probably why it didn't work for her;
    - Second row captain's chairs slide backwards, opening up enough legroom to use the footrests;
    - She was folding the third row seats wrong - no need to reach around to the strap in front. You can actually do it easily one-handed from behind (no sniggering in the back!)
    Additionally:
    - You don't need to fit an aftermarket DVD system since Kia offers one as an option - it's just not included in any of the standard trims. And DVD systems are so 1990s anyway!
    - She said it was cramped in the third row, but she looked hunched forward, so that's to be expected. The third row seats actually recline, making it feel much more spacious but since she doesn't know how to operate the third row seats (see third bullet point above), her assumption is no surprise!

    Fitting cars with personal gadgets is silly:
    - those things age like crazy, they're outdated when the car is brand spanking new,
    - automakers let you pay crazy money for otherwise cheap devices,
    - you attract people to break in and rip that thing off.

  • @jamesgjt
    @jamesgjt 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    well they have manual mode not only more fun because it is a safety and economical feature. it is useful when you need the power such as uphill or towing. when you go uphill, normal auto will bounce between gears so that the speed will not be constant and result less fuel economy. lets say ur foot is on 60km uphill. the auto will tends to upshift for u, but the next gear will not enough power to get u upto 60, instead it will go back down to 50. then you will step harder to adjust the deficit and the auto will downshift 2 gears inorder to reach back to 60. that will waste gas as u upshift and downshift repeatedly. manual mode prevent this to hold the gear for you. Also, some manual mode can let u start with second gear. if we start the car in 1st in wet, sometimes tires will slip. if you start on sec, u can mostly preventing this from happening. It is safer this way because once the wheel lose traction, it loses control and takes time to get it back.

    Completely un-educated review. She couldn't even fold the third row seats properly (just pull the string first...) The smart lift gate works always and perfectly as designed (you just have to be away from the vehicle for a while - imagine that you are going to the grocery store and come back with your hands full.) The manual shifter is God sent in the snow and in the mountains, I use it EVERY day here... I get on average 23-25 MPG in my 2015 Kia Sedona SX in the mixed driving in WV. Maybe, you have a led foot... And my kids and my mother in law can easily fit between the seats and the Slide 'n Stow 2nd row seats are truly THE BEST feature of this fabulous looking, incredibly comfortable, quite fuel efficient Multi Purpose Vehicle. I have NO affiliation with Kia and this is my second Kia (1st one is 2011 Sorento - LOVE IT!!!) I would have no troubles recommending it HIGHLY! BTW, I only paid $32500 for the new SX, so it is definitely more cost efficient then Odyssey or Sienna and absolutely more feature rich (who cares about dvds anymore in the age of media streaming and tablets - dvd player in the car is a completely overpriced and old fashioned feature in my opinion...) BTW, there are 3 USBs, Wi-Fi Hot Spot feature and even a 120W power outlet - what other van has this kind of connectivity heaven for 32K? Please do your homework better before posting videos...

      +Anton Shelepov Its a minivan review, they probably only did it for the heck of it. Likewise, I only watched because it is a minivan review. It really isn't anything special, it is a boring people hauler and if you are talking about the snow this is nothing compared to the AWD Sienna and while the DVD player feature is useless being able to plug in a HDMI device and watching movies or playing games on it is extremely nice to have. Also the fuel economy on the KIA is pretty terrible compared to the Sienna and the Odyssey which both get better fuel economy. Also all the features you talk about the other vans also have those at similar trim levels with the exception of Wi-Fi hotspot though, why have another data plan on your vehicle when you already have one on your phone which can also act as Wi-Fi hotspot. The only cool feature that this car has is the second row seats which I do admit is very neat.

    • @Shelant
      @Shelant 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Himmel Weint How do you know about real life MPG? Do you own all these vans you are talking about? I on the other hand was a happy owner of this vehicle and I have several friends who own Siennas and Odysseys and the mileage is comparable to say the least. On the most interstate travels, driving between 60-80 I was getting between 25-27 MPG. At the end of the day, I could care less what some random stranger or car reviewer says, if it fits my needs and drives my family safely, comfortably, stylishly...

      @HimmelWeint 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Anton Shelepov My occupation allows me to pretty much drive any car under the sun and with the tools I have on hand I can actually see fuel consumption averaged and this particular van does on average eat more fuel than it's competitors not to mention the competitor's offerings are a whole lot more reliable. This car is not a bad car, it is as this video concludes it is a car that should be leased.

    As an owner of a 2016 Sedona SXL 8 seater with tech pkg... This review lacks proper reasearch.
    The fact that she actually recommends a Dodge Caravan as an alternative blows my mind. The Dodge Caravan and Chrysler T&C have horrible crash test ratings. You can watch the videos here on TH-cam.

    • @AG-Consulting
      @AG-Consulting 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wouldn't put my wife on a Dodge Caravan even if it was free, the think only "barely" passed the ntsa partial front test and the only reason it did was because Dodge modified the software on airbag deployment to add a delay so that the driver's head doesn't hit the A pillar, yet the rest of the body will still be crushed. While the reviewer seems nice, the review itself is a joke, she needs to get 4 kids put inside a minivan drive it cross country and than comeback and talk with me about it. I have only rented this van before but it seemed quite nice, much better than our 2010 Honda Odyssey. It seems that it will be our next van.

      +André Garcia Personally I am very happy with my Sedona SXL... so far. I would never pay full price because I dont think they're worth it, but it seems to be a great value as far as I can tell. Dodge & Chrysler are complete garbage and reliability & safety are fatal. I've have heard Dodge/Chrysler people talk smack about KIA... which astounds me. Dodge Chrysler = crap... notoriously.

    • @AG-Consulting
      @AG-Consulting 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good to know. We just purchased a new 2016 EX yesterday, I like the SXL, just couldn't justify the extra $10K for the added features. So far it seems to be a great vehicle, I like the toyota sienna as well, but for what I paid for my new EX I could only get an used 2015 or 2014 Sienna with over 30,000 miles on it and a 36K warranty. Not worth it.
      And i'm with you, Chrysler and Dodge are garbage, they have the stow-and-go sets, but they only work because their seats are like cardboard, ultra thin, they bend when you install a car seat on it. Interior quality is horrible full of hard plastics and the crash test ratings were VERY poor, I would never put any of my family in one of them.

    • @DavidHarris74
      @DavidHarris74 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      We were also cross-shopping the 2016 Seinna vs. Sedona. The Sedona with the same options was $5 less than the Sienna. Not only is the Sedona cheaper, it has a much better dash.
      And, Android Auto is awesome. Toyota does not have AA, i.e. is not part of AA. If you're an Apple person, this of course doesn't apply. Luckily, my wife and I are both Android people.

    • @DavidHarris74
      @DavidHarris74 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yup. And, all Kias - including the Sedona - come with 10/100,000 powertrain warranty.
      Fun fact : they use Kia and Hyudais as taxis in Seoul, a brutal city for cars. Since Kia and Hyundai have their HQs there, it's effectively a live, continuous proving/torture grounds. That's partly why, IMHO, why Hyundai/Kia have such high reliability ratings.

    Manual mode for a minivan. So you can keep it the gear you want, maybe for passing or ascending a long grade to keep the transmission from hunting for a gear. Or going downhill for compression braking. Toyota offers it, as does KIA apparently. Honda doesn't and neither does Chrysler in the Pacifica probably for transmission longevity.

      It means they are ahead of the others----kids now all have I-Pads and other devices. They have no interest in screens that hang from the ceiling in a minivan. They have charging cords, so her comment about batteries running out is ridiculous.

      +Jacob TJ Why do you have to be so bitter. And seriously? Driving dynamics in a minivan? lmao WTF?

    • @AG-Consulting
      @AG-Consulting 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Driving dynamics in a minivan is VERY important, considering it's a box on wheels, the better the dynamics the safer it is. Besides many people have minivans because they have kids and need a large practical vehicle that doesn't mean they don't enjoy driving.

  • @therealboofighter

    For blasting kids around you don't need fancy, you need cheap and durable. The dodge is the way to go, better seats, as in easy to fold, better fuel economy and a great infotainment system.

      This is the last model year of the cheap caravan. FCA is only going to sell the town and country

    • @water892
      @water892 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's not really the case. Most of the vans sold are the higher end trims. Minivans now aren't just for hauling kids, they are for big family and people want luxurious features over a basic one. Who wants to drive a minivan that has no features? By the way, the Grand Caravans seat are terrible compared to the Kia's and also compared to the Sienna and Odyssey. I know that because I've experienced all. Maybe you should consider more factors before posting a comment.

    I want I in a minivan, I want one with Hybrid drivetrain with 360 torque and regen braking. Or I would get a 3.3 Lamada and tune it too 381 HP and AWD. I would tune the suspension make it Sports Minivan. If only I had the money to make a Tuning Company for Performance.

    Why put a manual mode in? Because you'd be complaining if it wasn't there. What I don't understand is why you re so confused about why KIA added it. So it can be a feature other mini vans don't offer. Its not rocket science.

    It's a $1,000 option. Way overpriced.
    IMHO, not needed these days. Kids have tablets. And, this minivan has tons of charging options, i.e. plenty of ways to keep tablets and phones powered.

    Just wondering how long all your Head gaskets lasted, seems is a known issue that the head bolts come loose because the threads strip out causing the head to leak and overheat the engine. Ours was 1 month over warranty and were quoted 12000 to get a replacement engine. Still owing 12000 on the Van. Kia does now have a recall on the engines on the 2016 and newer 3.3L engines. Too Bad was a nice van and allways cared for. Now driving a Dodge.....Kia wouldnt even offer to take it in on a trade in for a new kia. Mazda did. Got the Mazda and traded it in for a dodge caravan. Kia no longer uses the 3.3L. Our Kia had 132000 km and was now garbage didnt even make it to be paid off before it factory flaw destructed.

    The constant wanna-be-cool giggle is just as annoying as the lack of basic knowledge. Why Shiftronic (manual) gear? Because when you tow you might want to use the same gear especially downhill to hold the caravan or whatever you are towing back and not pushing you off the road. This minivan is fantastic but a more objective less winging person. And the fact that there is no entertainment unit at the back is a plus. Unless you want your kids act like a bimbo... Advice: do your homework before a test video.
