My tiny permaculture garden is on my 1/8 acre lot (including my house) in Zone 10 (adjusted for climate change) near downtown Orlando, FL. I don't really have space for more than permaculture zones 1 and 2, but I have organized my growing space as a series of large raised beds connected and bound by paved walking paths. I have created a comfortable hang out space in the center where I take my breakfast and morning coffee. This encourages me to check on my fruit trees and veggies every morning, which is very important in times like peak mango season (now) when several fruits a day are ripening. The frequent presence of humans in the garden is also a deterrent to other animals that would like to eat the fruits. I also organize my beds into "zones" by planting veggie crops within easy reach of the walking paths while in situ compost piles which seldom require any care, are located further from the walkways out of easy reach but still within view.

Thought is the key to efficient design. Planning is the key to efficient use.

My zone 1 includes my compost pile, greenhouse, and kitchen garden. It also has pretty flowers so I can watch bees and butterflies. I have some strawberries in my zone 1, and some in my zone 2 (and a few even out in zone 3, but those are more for wildlife). My other berries are all in zone 2 and 3, though. That’s where they make the most sense for me.

Our unripe green strawberries disappeared suddenly. I had grown them in a half barrel on the patio and had a fire screen dome ready for when they began to ripen. But the birds and chipmunks still beat me to it! Next year the firescreen goes on early.

I just hired someone to help reorganize my zones. I'm going to put another herb spiral, the first was an experiment, outside the back door. I'm moving the banana stool to a wetter lower part of the yard. I'm definitely going to shift stuff. I can't physically do the stting up work, but I'm having so much fun planning and designing. Thanks for all your teaching Angela.

My zone 1 is the patch of yard I use to play with my dog. It looks kinda funny because it's some patchy grass/low weeds, but it works for us because she wants to play all the time. My little nursery area with seedlings and cuttings is also in my zone 1, right next to my dog's water bowl.

You have made me think I like zone one. Much to contemplate now eat those delicious strawberries.

Is that a meadow checkermallow at 2:05? Those are the best 🦋🌸. Do you have a video on depaving? I also want to swap some driveway for more garden but I don't where to start -- did you need to rent a jackhammer or something?

WRT how much I spend time I spend there, zones 1,2, and 3 blend together. If I had the physical humph, I'd spend my entire day in the garden.
But the herbs have to come to the back door for culinary purposes.

Your house and garden are so charming, Angela. Love the owl next to the front door. I have a lot of pest pressure from wee rabbits and a neighborhood woodchuck. How do you ensure that critters don’t get to crops like strawberries?

If you have a very small yard, is the whole thing zone 1 or maybe 1 and 2?

I definitely have 3 zones but absolutely yes, folks with small yards may only have zones 1-2 on their property and the rest are community spaces.

I found the hose access can also make something essentially a Zone 3/4 for a small yard.
There is one spot in my yard that is much harder to get a hose to. So that area is going to be a native garden that I won't have to water very frequently.

@@lwjenson We have almost everything on drip. If we didn't, we just wouldn't get around to watering frequently enough.
