How to Repair a Broken or Leaky Melnor Hose Nozzle

- I really like my Melnor Rear-Trigger 7-Pattern Hose Nozzle, so in this video I show you how I fix it when the trigger fails (handle doesn't work) or the nozzle leaks. If you have your receipt, most Melnor products come with a 3-7 year warranty and they'll ship you a new one; however, if you've lost the receipt or have already received a replacement (mine lasted one season), try this repair. While a new hose nozzle is $5-10 and the replacement parts for multiple repairs cost ~$5, your repaired nozzle will likely outlast a new one if you use stainless steel springs (available at your local hardware store).
In this video I repair a Melnor model # 471-173, but the setup is similar for most multi-pattern nozzles - ie, Melnor models 151-10, 301-416, T131-10, XT201, T201 and similar models by Viking, Gardenite, Gilmour, Prudance, and Acqua-Gun. - บันเทิง

One of the best real time videos I've come across. I particularly appreciated the fact that you didn't edit out any small glitches like screws or clicker button falling out, the effort needed to replace the spray head, and the leak requiring adjustment of the back screw knob. It's so reassuring when the same thing happens as I try the job for myself. All is not lost! Thank you very much for your efforts, Bruce.

Thank you so much. By following the video, I was able to repair my nozzle (which I think is this exact model), and it now works perfectly. I couldn't find a stainless steel spring, so I just bought a zinc one plus a spare, which I'll no doubt have to use sooner than I'd otherwise have to do.
Glad the video was helpful. A zinc spring will definitely rust, but you should get a season out of it.
Thanks mate, I was trying to make 1 good out of 2 old broken sprayers, used a spring from a pump shampoo bottle, but it was leaking out the back , not until I saw your vid and realised I had to put the rubber seal and washer on after fitting the spring, now have one sprayer working perfectly here in Thailand, Thanks again Bruce

That is true. which is why I try to get nozzles that I can fix or rebuild. Unfortunately with these Melnor nozzles, you can fix them for a few years to extend the life, but then other parts start to fail.

I'm actually in the market to BUY a nozzle not repair one. However, I liked and saved this video for future use. Based on comments here and on Amazon, I've decided NOT to buy a Melnor nozzle. The problem is which garden nozzle do I buy that's durable for years of daily home use. Any suggestions anyone?
Thank you for the kind words! I've had so many nozzles over the years... I've purchased the inexpensive ones from Harbor Freight as well as the expensive ones from the local nursery. I wish I could say you always "get what you pay for, " but unfortunately no nozzle I've owned has lasted more than a few seasons. Seems no matter how well I take care of them, the gaskets or springs wear out. That's why I only get nozzles that look that they are serviceable. Thanks again!
I bought a Melnor about three years ago. It leaks and will not be removed from the hose. I bought a new sprayer but as I said, I can't remove the Melnor. So, I found this video and I might have to do the repair instead of replacing. I am glad it's possible AND that you posted this. Thanks!
Glad it was helpful. The repair is easy although I’ve never tried doing it with the nozzle still on the hose. Have you tried putting opposing channel lock pliers on the hose and coupling? That might get take it off. Good luck!
@@BruceAlanR I have and it seems utterly stuck. Doing it alone makes it even more difficult. I'll try it again and if it doesn't come off I'm trying your repair method.

Yikes! Ironically I just bought some new springs today for another nozzle that lasted two seasons.
Just fixed mine, which looks identical to the version in the video. The original spring was about 1.5" long, and the plunger shaft is .25" diameter. I found the Prime-Line SP-9724 springs, $4 for a 4 pack from Ace Hardware, to work perfectly. They aren't stainless, and I can't comment on the longevity yet. But they are cheap and now my sprayer works correctly again.

Glad the video was helpful. I made this video because no nozzle seems to last more than two years anymore. Whether I purchased a cheap nozzle from Hatbor Freight (not recommended) or an expensive one from the local garden shop, I couldn’t get more than 2 seasons out of them. That’s why I only choose nozzles that I can service now.

Glad it helped! I've repaired the Melnors and other brands of nozzle the same way. Recently, I fixed my neighbor's Harbor Freight nozzle (put in a new spring, greased the gaskets, etc.) and he says it works better than it did when it was new. Ha!

This repair will get you a few extra seasons out of the nozzle. Eventually parts that can’t be replaced (gaskets, plastics) will wear out, but then keep the nozzle for parts. 😃

Agreed... I was looking for tips on a front-triggered nozzle; those seem to be more difficult, possibly outright unrepairable.
You make a great point! Knowing that nozzles will eventually fail,(not a matter of if, but when) we should all succumb to purchasing nozzles that can be easily repaired. 😃
I used two of the smallest springs and succeeded at the beginning. It failed to stop the water a couple months later. I realized that the springs are not strong enough. Now I have upgraded to bigger ones and the spring action is much better. I am pretty sure it will do it.
My local Home Depot has a decent spring collection and yes, you want strong springs. 👍

2 more tips on this procedure:
- if you don’t loosen the plunger screw cap until after you remove the front nozzle selector and the two smaller retaining screws, then you can use the trigger & plunger to assist with removing the front assembly (without needing the flathead screwdriver)... just squeeze the trigger to pop off the front assy.; mind the smaller parts.
- Similarly, after you put the plunger’s screw cap back on, you can then squeeze the trigger to assist with replacing the front selector assembly, which makes it easier to start those two small retaining screws... a magnetic driver tip helps here as well, since one hand will be squeezing the trigger, while the other starts the two retaining screws.
Also, if there’s a lot of rust or corrosion inside a metal nozzle, then I’ll use my rotary tool with a wire brush attachment to knock off the deposits [small wire brush hand tools work, too], while everything is pulled apart.
Additionally, I sometimes apply some Vaseline or pool/spa valve lube around the large gasket at the base of the selector assembly (plus the back seal of the plunger), which also helps to re-insert the assembly back into the handle, while also helping to seal up potential minor leaking.

If you do not have a magnetic screwdriver, here is what works. Take painters tape and put the screwdriver into the screw. Lightly take painter tape (blue) and wrap around. Once in, take off tape. I use this for everything.

What you have shown is why you should NEVER buy a Melnor nozzle. Using screws and springs that are ALL subject to rust is either massive stupidity on Melnor's part, or their engineers are totally incompetent. Either one is a really bad sign, and means you should pick some competitors nozzle instead of a Melnor. Sorry to have to say this, but EVERYTHING in the nozzle should be made from plastic or stainless steel, including all the screws and CERTAINLY ALL THE SPRINGS!

I completely agree with your quality assessment of Melnor’s hose nozzle. I’ve had many cheap nozzles over the years and they’re all designed for failure in an effort to get folks to keep buying.
your hose is leaking at where the nozzle is connected to the hose as seen at around 10.13. how do u fix that?
If there's a leak at where the nozzle connects to the hose, change the rubber gasket in the bottom of the hose nozzle.

Thanks! I broke out the hoses a few weeks ago and repaired my hose nozzles... and the neighbors (ha!)... which I haven't had to do since I made the video. They all work like new again! The neighbor was impressed! 😃
what is the diameter of the spring
My Nelnor is a different model, the back side of the handle doesn't seem to come off, its not screw on like yours. So yeah I got the front off, but cant get the pin out.
Ugh! I'm sorry to hear that. After wasting lots of money on cheap (Harbor Freight) and expensive (local garden center) nozzles every season, I decided I'd only invest in nozzles that can be serviced. Now I get 2-3+ seasons out of a nozzle at which point rubber gaskets dry out, handles break, screws strip, etc.
My Melnor model has a plastic lever at the back that's part of a ball valve to turn on and off the water. It leaks at the joint. It's unfixable. I think the plastic ball valve wears down with use and can't be replaced.
Ugh. Sorry. Seems like Melnor’s engineers design with planned obsolescence in mind. If only they could design something that’s easier to fix and lasts. I’d pay more for it. I’m sure others would too.

Try Harbor Freight. They seem to have these type of supplies. While you are there, pick up a package of various sized o-rings. You will need these as well.
Seat the yellow plastic assembly's 1-inch O-ring with a coat of liquid detergent to slip it on easier, it doesn't like dry installations.

i have a similar model, but there is a metal screen in front of the screw. How do i remove that?

@@BruceAlanR that's ok i figured it out. There's a red and black screwie-type piece of plastic in the center that i ended up loosening and I could get to the screw underneath

Great question! I haven’t needed to replace the o-rings, but my local Home Depot carries a 200-piece assorted o-ring set which may have a size that works. I’ll pick one up once I’m no longer quarantined.
@@BruceAlanR I opened my leaking nozzle and discovered my small interior o-ring is missing, so I can't measure it to replace it. I just bought the 200 o-ring assortment at Home Depot, and the Danco #7 is close on outside diameter (1/2"), but is too thin to fill the gap ((1/16"). I have been searching for anyone who knows the correct o-ring size for days. I now know more about o-rings than I want to know. Could you (or someone) measure their o-ring with a caliper and tell me the outside diameter (OD), inside diameter (ID) and thickness of the interior o-ring? Much appreciated.
So many O-rings... so little time. 🤪 there are 2 rubber O-rings on the stem of the plunger. If those are what you’re looking for, I measured OD = 0.420” (10.66 mm); ID = 0.231” (5.87 mm - tough to measure, but opening would just need to be smaller than shaft width for tight fit); thickness of rubber = .097”(2.46 mm). Although the math doesn’t make sense to me... I may need a refresher on 5th grade geometry or I should get calipers that don’t say on the box, “As seen on TV”. 🙄
I have a relax grip nozzle and when i let go of the trigger it still sprays

I’ve never opened up a relaxed grip nozzle but if you take it apart, there’s likely a plunger with a rubber gasket on the tip that plugs the hole when turned off. You may be able to get parts for it or contact the manufacturer for a replacement. If not, I recommend investing in a nozzle that can be serviced. I got tired of throwing away cheap and expensive nozzles, which is why I decided to only get nozzles that could be serviced. Good luck!
I have a differnt model; it'w new and it leaks so I think it may not have been assembled properly. what does the gasket fit into?
Happy to try and help. There are multiple gaskets. Are you referring to the one on the plunger?
@@BruceAlanR The brass bit with wide guidepiece has an o-ring in front of it. What does this meet to form a seal - as this is not working on my spray gun. The makers have been useless; they don't have a diagram or spares, so I am trying to deduce why it isn't forming a seal and water is till getting through.
Perhaps send me the model number so I can get an idea of what your nozzle looks like?

Got it. Looks similar to a nozzle I got at the local nursery years ago. When you release the handle does the handle retract and then water continues to come out of the front of the nozzle?
I got as far as the gasket, but the adjustment ring just wouldn't budge out of the hose housing. If I try getting a chisel in between the ring and the housing it will probably break. Oh well.
Quite possible. I snapped the plastic rim on one of my older nozzles. The plastic gets brittle over time with exposure to the elements.
My problem is - It doesn't shut off completely. Mine is only like 2 months old (we do have hard water). The house is on a water softener, but NOT the outside faucet. I've taken it apart twice, and put it back together, it still leaks, just out the front.
Sounds like the spring is too weak to fully engage the plunger. If there’s plenty of spring in the spring, the gasket on the front of the plunger may be cracked or dried out.

I've owned this same type of Melnor hose nozzle I bought at my local Home Depot; I yesterday went to use this nozzle and found the black cap lying on the ground near my hose. The end twistable black cap had fallen off the nozzle and it appeared that there was a yellow stub of the center pin remaining so I realize that the yellow pin had broken off. I'll have to see if I save the receipt for this nozzle; if I can't locate it I might take a photo of it and send it to Melnor.

Already done; I believe that I purchased this a Walmart and it likely cost less than $10. I took a photo of this nozzle and included a receipt for a Mlnor hose reel that I'd purchased from Lowes Hardware about the same time. I believe that this hose nozzle had a lifetime warranty and yes they'll likely send me another one. Not a big deal but at least I've showed them that the design of the nozzle was not too good.
What is your time worth? Just order another one and have it delivered to your door? Thanks for your time in any case.

America (and most of the world) has become too much of a disposable society... many people place no value on repairs! Works out well for me though... I get lots of super cheap or free stuff that I can fix!
The more things you learn how to fix, the easier and faster it gets. Over the long run you'll save money and time fixing things yourself.
This is not some throw away household item - how wasteful! Most things require a bit of maintenance to keep them working like new. And some folks like tinkering and helping others.

Excellent video but terrible product. I disassembled the nozzle using the tips in the vid, the spring looked in good shape and I manually stretched it out as perhaps the seal wasn't quite reaching it's counterpart but this did nothing. The nozzle was spraying but the handle control had spring action but did nothing to stop or control the spray. It was most likely the gasket at the end of the pin which was failing and with no "parts kit" available I will result to purchasing something to turn on and off the water at the end of hose before connecting to the nozzle. Again, a terrible product from my experience, we had it just 2 years, warranty only one month.
I completely agree! At the end of the season every year I’ve started to take my nozzles apart and apply plumbers grease to keep the gaskets going. I won’t be buying another Melnor once mine fail. I’m now down to two and my third has been saved for parts.
2021 - Melnor has redesigned this hose nozzle so one cannot remove the spring. The first part of your video will not apply as one cannot unscrew the part holding the end of the spring. Once inside, following your directions, there is an unmovable plastic cap on the spring so the nozzle becomes irreparable thus useless. Great for Melnor, they want you to buy another. This is the only brand Home Depot carries. Melnor is based in Virginia, a deep Red state. HD donates to Red candidates. Melnor's products are made in China. DO NOT SUPPORT THIS BRAND OR HOME DEPOT.
