  • The WonderSwan was Gunpei Yokoi's last creation before his untimely death. After designing Nintendo's Game Boy and Game & Watch handheld consoles, he went to Bandai were his work competed against the Game Boy Color. Released in 1999 and 2000, initially the WonderSwan and WonderSwan Color saw considerable success against the Nintendo Game Boy and Game Boy Color in Japan, but the release of the Game Boy Advance in 2001 did not do Bandai any favors.
Despite being discontinued in 2003, the Bandai WonderSwan was a fascinating handheld console, and one which is still worth owning today. It ended up getting 103 games, and had incredible third party support resulting in it getting games from series like Final Fantasy, Digimon, and even Mega Man! The console was also a haven for games based off of anime series, including One Piece, Inuyasha, and Gundam.
In this video we are unboxing a special edition WonderSwan Color console bundle which included Final Fantasy II. We also take a quick look at the black and white version of the console before beginning the unboxing. My hope is a great introduction to the console even for those who have no prior knowledge of the console!

FF II is very underated. Unique battle system.

FFII has defenders, but the general opinion of the game in the West is that it's a mess, a disaster. This isn't fair at all, FFII's character progression system is actually really ahead of its time and has a lot going for it. For example, there is no need to grind in FFII at all, the progression system is quite cleverly "self-balancing", whereas in FFI you'll probably need to grind to get through the game unless you *really* know what you're doing.
Akitoshi Kawazu designed FFII's battle system, and he later perfected it in "Romancing SaGa". He deserves more credit as a designer, he was always willing to experiment with unusual ideas.

I took knowledge of WonderSwan (B/W and Color) existence recently this year. If the console had a backlight maybe it would be more successful given the fact that GBA didn't have until the SP release. Cool review!

I had a chance to buy a Wonder Swan Color when I was in 4th grade, but I eventually chose to go with a GBA. While I liked it, I have to say the marketing strategies of Wonder Swan were disastrous. First, coming up with a black and white console when the handheld market was already making its transition to color; Gameboy color had been on the market for quite some time then. Second, they realized their console was obsolete upon release, so they quickly ditched the original customer base that supported them a year ago and released the Color. I can only imagine how pissed off the customers would have been. Third, released the Crystal 2 years after the Color but quickly pulled out of the market. Bet all those people who supported this company back in the day will never wanna come back.
But, if this console had a backlight, it may have been a different story. I don't know what the design team was thinking, adding a backlight would greatly increase its competitiveness in the market. Gunpei Yokoi must have been too content with the glory from the Gameboy days...
PS: someone actually said Gunpei Yokoi correctly, it bugs me when people don't make an effort to say people's name right when introducing them. Subscribed!

Thank you so much for watching, commenting, and subscribing! That's some very excellent insight into what went on back in the day, and you make a lot of really fantastic points! It reminds me a lot of how the TurboGrafx-16 did in North America, arriving just a little too late to really capture the attention of people. Had things gone differently, it would have been cool to see what the Wonder Swan could have been!
Thank you very much once again! I hope that you enjoy my content. :)

Seems like a really cool handheld from Japan. I wish these had a usa release cause i would of loved to have one. I got into final fantasy a few years back, so having that on the go be cool. Luckily switch has a few and i still own a vita where i can play the ps1 ff games. Thanks for showing off this little gem. I actually had heard of this from RGT85 who showed it off too. Either way, good video as always.

Thank you for watching and commenting! There really were some interesting handheld consoles back in the day. Sega, Atari, SNK, Bandai...the number of companies attempting to take away attention from the Game Boy was huge! I think that competition in that area was definitely a good thing. It's a shame that this one never came to North America though!

@@TheGameDisplay Companies definitely wanted to rival the gameboy, Nintendo has always been the king of handheld systems. There still doing it to this day with the Switch.

@@alexanderoglesby1985 Absolutely! Only now, Nintendo's main portable competitors are phones rather than other gaming companies. I really miss the earlier days of portable gaming.
