    I have been fishing for lings out of Santa Cruz since 1985 ( yes I am old 62) I met a guy in our fishing club that was always the number one ling killer. He showed us all his way to fish live bait and our catch ratio went up by 50 % 1. His hook size was 2 times the size you are using - lings are not hook shy. The only place I could find hooks that big was fisherman warehouse (now closed in San Jose). The other thing he taught us was never set the hook - just wind the real in a slow steady pace ( do not pump the rod) - this is very hard to do the first couple of times - you are just pulling the bait out of their mouth. The 3rd thing he taught us was to never let the ling get close to the top of the water. We gaff the ling a foot below the surface. You will be shocked how many lings are not hooked but are just holding on to the bait When you gaff the ling they open their mouths and the bait just fall out with no hooks in the ling at all. The 10 boats in our club all caught more and bigger lings after that great lesson from a real pro ling killer. This only works for big liver bait - we do not do this with jigs or squid. You can call me if you want more info Jeff 831 466 6390

      From a man that catches these fish in Santa Cruz for money...I can attest that the information from Jef Smith is 100% accurate. This is exactly the correct method for lingcod with live bait. The only thing i would add is not only do you not set the hook when you are getting a bite, we let them chew on it for a little bit...often 10 seconds or more. Then an initial steady lift to get them off the rocks (not a hookset) and wind them up, if they realize they're hooked they will almost always make an initial run and another one at the boat.

    I caught my PB lingcod last week in santa Cruz on your sliding Snell rig. Thank you brother. It was 9lbs 29 inches.

    Og fishermen here, in 1982 my brother in law got some bicycle chrome handle bars, cut them 9 inch smashed the ends poured lead inside drill holes on the ends to add fishhook and line, we went to the farallon islands in a 22" Boston whaler, he caught a 41 pound lingcod, the head was as big as a basketball, fish of 30 pound and up were common in those days

      Y'all need to come up here and fish Sonoma coast, lings for days! Check out my first ever fishing video from Timber a few weeks ago.
      One little tip I've discovered: when fishing for ling with live bait, don't tug to set the hook. You could lose a hitchhiker that way. If the hook is in good position, it'll sink in during the fight. 2/3 of the lings I catch with live bait aren't even hooked. Also, small black or blue rockfish are preferable. They can't say no to that bait!

My hat's off to you brother!! Every time you say your going to bleed you're fish I cringe!! Just seen a big article about a kayak fisherman in shelter cove got attacked by a 18-footer great white.. bit a hole through the guys kayak.. he was very lucky.. but I'm sure you know the risks.. love your videos!! why don't you let them eat longer? are you using braid? and your pole almost looks like it's under powered aka not stiff enough just my opinion on that last one. do you run a stinger hook?

    • @TimLPINE
      @TimLPINE 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      He is running a stinger hook but often a ling will grab the bait in the middle and miss both hooks. They'll actually hold the bait all the way to the surface and then let go. The trick I've always used is to not embed the stinger too deeply in the bait, especially if it's larger like a kingfish or jack smelt. That way when you set the hook it released from the bait and gets the ling in the jaw. I don't miss too many lings; just sayin'.
