Absolutely. I'm a waitress and am always washing my hands. It's good to be able to feel your hands and anything that may get on them, opposed to possibly not washing your hands as often whilst wearing gloves because you can't feel if something is on them. I believe gloves gives people a false sense of security/cleanliness.
i loved it when one of my friends got a job at local chippy i would go in to see him and egt free chips and all scraps that was left before they shut for free 🤣😂
An important point that I see so many people get wrong... PUT the vinegar on FIRST, followed by salt (they often do the salt first!). The vinegar moistens the chips, then then the salt sticks... (otherwise mostnof the salt falls onto the plate!). Lemon on the fish. BOTH lemon and vinegar are ACIDIC and 'cut through the grease/oil fats' to make food easier to digest...
I have my fish and chips, with salt and vinegar on the chips, and salt and lemon on the fish. I'm so hungry now 😂. I would also recommend going to a traditional independent fish and chip shop, like Poppies, not a pub, or a chain fish and chip shop like Smarts.
fish and chips are loved across all 4 country's England , Scotland . wales . Northern Ireland best fish caught from Scotland's sea waters and fish farms , Scotland has very good sea food from Haddock cod scottish Salmond muscles crabs sea bass Oysters ect
Traditional fish and chips are NOT cooked in oil, we use Beef dripping. ANY chip shop will have a line of customers outside every day. Most eaten take away food in UK.
There are more fish and chip shops than McDonalds (probably kfc combined) in the uk. It’s not a tourist thing, but every region does it slightly different but we all love it, mushy peas, gravy or curry sauce depending on where you are in the country but definitely salt and vinegar all over
In Edinburgh they do Salt and sauce rather than vinegar. The sauce is a cross between vinegar and HP sauce and to be honest I wasn't impressed with it when i tried it
If the first thing you’re going to do in England is eat fish and chips DO NOT get them at a pub. Find an old established Fish and Chip shop and preferably at the seaside, my all time favourite is The Neptune Fish & Chip shop in Hastings, East Sussex or if you visit Kent try Ossie’s in Faversham, perfection👌
Nice traditional take away here in the UK and Chips are thicker than fries and more filling, adding salt and vinegar to them extracts the flavour, as for the fish its getting very expensive in the UK now with many places charging around $15 for cod , pre covid it was closer to $8 so no longer a take away everyone can afford, Poppies is located in tourist parts of London not all over UK but Fish and Chip shops can be found all over the country some good some not so good, so always check out google reviews etc before buying
Love how open you are to UK food, can't wait for you to get here, with your amazing positive attitude and great personality, we'll be happy to have you. Grap that plane ticket.
There would usually be some grease proof paper n a sheet of white paper before the newspaper so that’s not touching the food…loved the newspaper because you could make a hole in it and eat with yr fingers from so the rest would stay hot..chefs kiss for a good chippy
Salt and vinegar ( if wanted) goes over EVERYTHING. Personally I don't like vinegar, so I only sprinkle salt. Not all fish and chip shops are equal. To find a good one, try to locate the busiest "chippy" on a Friday evening (between 17.00 and 19.30). The locals in that area will ALWAYS know where the best fish and chips are served 😉❤️
I havent tried every chippy obviously but I have tried many in different parts of England. I could only recommend Whitby. Its also a massive tourist attraction anyway relating to Dracula and the town itself is eerie yet beautiful. But the fish and chips there really are second to none Oh and where possible, get them cooked in dripping rather than vegetable oil as the batter holds the vegetable oil and can make it soggy whereas the dripping always guarantees crispy batter - Yum
There can obviously be some variations in quality for different fish shops but a good piece of cod or haddock with crispy batter and nice chips (salt and vinegar to taste, naturally) is a fantastic meal.
Strac Mate, if you're coming to the UK and want to try fish & chips, or anything really, avoid the tourist spots near landmarks or attractions, as you'll pay over the odds and will not have as good an experience. You need to eat where the locals eat, as that will taste better and probably be half as much, if not cheaper.
Truth is the British absolutely love fish & chips, ❤️ the only reason we restrict it to once a week, fortnight or month is because fast food is too expensive to live of all the time
If you went for fish & chips you would have to join the queue (of locals) to place your order. There will be tourists in tourist hot spots as well. Enjoy! When you make it overc🙋♀️🇬🇧👍
Don’t ever call then French Fries. I worked in a chipper - potatoes in the peeling machine, then in the chipping machine. We then fried for a few minutes, ready for the final customer fry. All chippers in Dublin were run by Italians. Same on Scotland. Also they cook in beef fat, not oil. ❤️👍🏽👍☘️
If u get burnt by hot oil, pour vinegar or soy sauce on it,it stings like hell but it prevents ur skin fm blistering. My sis worked in a chip shop & was burnt down her arm,the owner poured vinegar on it. She didn't blister or scar.
Worked in a popular chip-shop in Portsmouth (Ben's fish bar) for years in the 90's .. Sooooo busy .. We had a good reputation ... Yes, we British do eat fish n chips .. some people/families at least once a week (especially in seaside towns) .. Some less frequently obviously. When you do come to Britain .. I hope the chippy you fist visit has fresh, good quality produce, as (like every other industry) some do not meet the standard that we would be proud of.
6:10 why? What is the fixation with gloves? If their hands are clean theres no need for gloves mate. The gloves are not necessary at that point so why add to plastics waste? Also, plastic gloves & hot fryer oil? Latex flavored oil.. yummy... 🤢
1.25 shows a newspaper article about two of great britains most dangerous gangsters, Ronnie and Reggie Kray (the Kray twins) i recommend looking into them as well as Charles Bronson, great britains most violent prisoner. Tom hardy spoke with him at length to get some inspiration on how to portray Bronson in film unfortunately the Krays died before they could see Tom bring their characters to life on the big screen and i can say he did them justice, also if you want to learn more about the UK and some of our darker history look up the peaky blinders. Much love from across the pond
Fish and chips is also a take away food in South Africa should also watch our foods we have lots of take away shops here we called them fisheries . Ya and vinegar and salt always on the the chips and fish 🇿🇦 I'm from Cape town , Atlantis
"look at all these french fries" god help the yanks 🤦♂😅. you sound so concerned about cleanliness that it's clear you have no idea about food hygiene lol. if kitchens were run with your idea of cleanliness and good hygiene, the place would be contaminated lad.
FISH AND CHIPS IS NOT SPECIFICALLY FOR TOURISTS. I don't have them more than three or four times a year but many people have them as often as once a week. People often buy them on cold winter evenings as a comfort food. We used to eat fish and chips wrapped in white paper but with newspaper wrapping around it to keep it hot until we got it home. Fish and chip shops have not existed since 1730 (the premises where the one shown were that old but it would not have sold fish and chips all that time) they began appearing in the Victorian era. A good fish and chip shop gives a choice of the kind of fish. A savaloy is only something sold in SE England, fish and chip shops in other parts of the UK don't sell them. All food outlets in the UK are inspected regularly and are given ratings. Food hygiene is rated from 0 to 5. Look for one with five stars*. (*In Scotland the ratings are just a pass or a requirement to improve,) Most fish and chip shops handle the fish with tongs and the chips are taken out of the boiling fat with a metal scoop. There are literally thousands of fish and chip shops in the UK, but seaside resorts have them everywhere. You need to put malt vinegar and salt on them, not non-brewed condiment. They are also nice with tomato ketchup on them. Strange they didn't mention mushy peas which some people, not me, like. The reason for the lemon and the vinegar is to couter-act the fat from the deep fried fish and chips. It helps with digesting it.
Saveloy sausages are prevalent here in the West Country. It's basically a hot dog. My childhood chippy, ( over 50 years) still going, sells, saveloy, chips and scrump as it's best selling menu option. Although a village chippy, people come from 60 miles away regularly to visit 👌🏻
It's weird to see someone eat fish and chips with a knife and fork. We generally eat them with our fingers. Don't get fish and chips in London, get them in a village or town by the sea.
PS Many of us don't deep fry fish and chips at home any more because of the risks of being scalded, we can buy oven chips and cook them in the oven. They don't need to go in hot oil because they have been coated in a frying medium.
I'm sorry to say i'm from the era of wrapping it up in news paper , no ink on my food at all lol .Wearing gloves makes the customer feel better , gloves are not that good for hygiene , washing your hands is best . Skip the lemon unless your in a fancy restaurant , loads of MALT vinagar and salt
If you venture outside the tourist areas, you'll not only get better fish and chips, they'll be a hell of a lot cheaper too. They love ripping off tourists in London.
You notice how they aren't using Fry baskets? That's why they aren't wearing gloves when putting things in the fryer. Imagine slipping into that oil with gloves on. No gloves is bad enough, but now add in plastic/rubber onto your sizzling skin....no thanks.
Salt and vinegar on your chips, vinegar and lemon on the fish, an accompanying serving of mushy peas, and a nice thick fresh slice of bread and butter...... food of the gods........ a pickled onion perhaps, and if you really feel extravagant, how about a pickled egg as well?? and if truth be told, everything really DID taste better if you ate it out of a newspaper while strolling down the street..............oh yes and NO ketchup...ever!
We had a family cheese making business for decades and never wore gloves. Washed regularly, hands are far better than gloves. Sadly you are bringing perceived American ideas to a situation about which you dont know. You are forgiven though because you couldn’t understand how he’d been there three years without trying them 👍. Don’t overdo the condiments though when you try it!
Poppies is overrated tourist trap do not go there. Tried them and the chips where nothing special and the portion size was not good, it was definitely smaller than the amount that was given to the guy on the vid, and the saveloy I had was way overcooked with the outside being too "crispy". Added with London's pricing which was considering the location not as bad as I expected but still to high and that was a quite a few years ago (before covid lockdown) dreading their prices today.
Always eaten with curry sauce these days mate, or gravy sauce if youre up north. Theres literally a chippy on every street corner btw, next to the indian, kebab shop and chinese.
In my opinion, always go a fish and chip shop, not a dine in. Takeaway portions are typically more generous by far. Salt and vinegar on everything (don't bother with the the lemon). Newspaper was replaced many years ago was banned in the 80s, but still remained using an unprinted paper with a similar texture (more recently they used less eco-friendly polystyrene/plastic containers).
I work in food preparation. We do not wear gloves. Gloves get dirty. We wash our hands a lot.
agreed, clean hands are far better than dirty gloves. You’re protecting the food, not your hands.
Absolutely. I'm a waitress and am always washing my hands. It's good to be able to feel your hands and anything that may get on them, opposed to possibly not washing your hands as often whilst wearing gloves because you can't feel if something is on them.
I believe gloves gives people a false sense of security/cleanliness.
Also if you wear gloves and you get splashed with oil it wouldn’t be pretty
Plus the majority of the gloves are not sterile
It's been proven people wearing gloves don't wash there hands as much as people who don't wear them.
Vinegar ALWAYS goes on your chips and when you get to England, if they ask you if you want scraps, the answer is yes
i loved it when one of my friends got a job at local chippy i would go in to see him and egt free chips and all scraps that was left before they shut for free 🤣😂
The dude in the video makes my teeth itch he’s so annoying

Disagree about vinegar. Scraps great
You get asked if you want the scraps?! Never have, that's not fair 😂
I have my fish and chips, with salt and vinegar on the chips, and salt and lemon on the fish. I'm so hungry now 😂. I would also recommend going to a traditional independent fish and chip shop, like Poppies, not a pub, or a chain fish and chip shop like Smarts.

Traditional fish and chips are NOT cooked in oil, we use Beef dripping. ANY chip shop will have a line of customers outside every day. Most eaten take away food in UK.
The American chap and his knife and fork as he was chatting to the camera? lol did anyone else want to shout "you'll have someones eye out!".
We use malt vinegar in UK
I can understand why you didn't get your burns treated because of the cost of getting it treated but then again that's why uk is a great country 😊
There are more fish and chip shops than McDonalds (probably kfc combined) in the uk. It’s not a tourist thing, but every region does it slightly different but we all love it, mushy peas, gravy or curry sauce depending on where you are in the country but definitely salt and vinegar all over

i pretty much drown my chips in vinegar salt and pepper.
Fish and chip shops are all over the UK besides England btw
Thin cut = fries
Thick cut = chips that's how we differentiate between the two types. 😊

A proper fish and chip shop - wonderful .
Cod and chips. Subime..
Poppies - legendary
@artemisfowl66
They never appeared in last year's Fish and Chip shop awards!
😂😂😂😂😂

Watching this while eating a chippy tea (i have sausage and chips and curry sauce). Yes we love fish and chips.
Oh yeah we have them all over the place here in South Africa... Back in the day they were normally run by your town's local Portuguese family.
word of advice: we call fish n' chip shops; chippies. remember that for your visit.
Just love your salute at the end of your videos😊
there's something satisfying about watching a yank try our food.
Where's the mushy peas 😂
That's a northern thing
Northern
What's wrong with the north 🤷 it was only a tongue in cheek comment 🤦 jeezaloo 😂
I'm from London born and bred and i always have mushy peas with cod and chips.
Mushy peas are ‘sold’ to tourists as a National thing but they’re not. Never heard of them growing up in London.
Three years where’s he been 😂😂
On a limb i'd say KFC and Maccies ^^

There can obviously be some variations in quality for different fish shops but a good piece of cod or haddock with crispy batter and nice chips (salt and vinegar to taste, naturally) is a fantastic meal.

Curry sauce is nice with fish and chips

It has to be malt vinegar. There should be mushy peas with it!
Wright’s Fish and Chips - Georgia, USA

Fish and chips is my favourite take out by a mile
Its personal preference, im a 55 year old English man and I only have salt on mine.
Hi Strachey, you would love our fish and chips with salt and vinegar I prefer pickled vinegar. Also tar tar sauce just beautiful ❤😊
Yes salt and vinegar on chips and lemon on fish yum
You can get sausage and chips pie and chips fritter and chips. Chicken and chips. And if it’s a Chinese chippy, a wide range of Chinese meals
And the uk have had fish wars which was called cod wars with Iceland you should check that out

Those are shockingly small pieces of fish. My local chippy gives us fish at least three times that size.
London, enough said
Vinegar 1st so the salt can soak in 😂

salt on chips also
For me - salt on chips and eat them with hellmans mayo. nothing on the fish, maybe a touch of salt
The magpie fish and chippy in Whitby beats poppies hands down. It’s far superior

That fish doesn't look great. Almost certainly cooked in vegetable oil - an offence unto God.
Everyone will know you are American.
The proper way of eating it is with your fingers…
Always eaten with curry sauce these days mate, or gravy sauce if youre up north. Theres literally a chippy on every street corner btw, next to the indian, kebab shop and chinese.
Salt and vinegar on the chips and a squeeze of lemon balances the heavy deep fried taste in the fish
