There should be a Dune game with the theme of "whatever your faction and management style, sooner or later you will always fall as a leader and the only win condition is to at least ensure the long term survival of humanity before your inevitable demise."
While I don't love the design of the new Galaxy Trucker (and I own the old anniversary edition), that achievement mechanic alone makes it rather tempting.
Not sure how I feel about that revised Dune, it feels like it shaves a lot of the actual diplomacy stuff out, without meaningfully simplifying the rules (I honestly think the complexity of the actual rules of Dune are highly exaggerated. There's a lot of depth, yes, but the rules are pretty easy to follow and largely intuitive especially if you have even a bit of a notion of the lore), and with fewer factions, meaning it doesn't support as many variations in player count. I'm not sure who this version is for, exactly. Like, i might've been tempted to sell on my copy of the earlier printing if this was the same game with the more diverse character art based on the film cast. But this won't replace that, but nor is it different enough to make you want to buy both.
My issue with the new Dune is that looks like the trimmed it down to about 1/2 to 2/3 of the original game in the hopes of attracting more causal fans whilst getting old fans to still identify it as The Dune game. The problem is that 99% of humanity doesn’t want to play either version of the Dune boardgame and the remaining one percent would probably rather just have the full experience. I think the fact that a third of the factions are gone, but the dotted storm lines dividing territories remain perfectly encapsulates my issues with the new dune.

If I want to show the original Dune to some people, might as well do the 30 min explanation and have a total blast, instead of doing a 20-25 min rules explanation for a quicker but maybe less satisfying game. As you point out, they seem to have kept some parts that are close to the identity of the original, but that are also weird and unintuitive. The only upside I can see to this is that it could maybe be a good introduction to the original Dune, as a "gateway Dune" and it will probably be easier to get to the table with max player count. In the end I don't see myself playing this over the original Dune.
This isn't meant to replace Classic Dune, but sit alongside it on the shelf, for days you want to conquer Arrakis, but don't have 6 people and several hours commitment. It's also a gateway for friends who are outfaced by the original. Many gaming groups love Dune, but can't get it to the table as often as they'd like.
I have played it a lot with my friends over TTS, and while the original game is the greatest board game ever made. This simplified version is a pretty fun dudes on a map game played in an hour. One of my friends who I could never get interested in joining my big board game sessions with the original suddenly asked to join our next session after playing this version. So as a die-hard original fan, I definitely see its value. It is probably the easiest assymetric strategy game I have to teach, and it is a pretty good gate-way drug for my board game friends who can get intimidated when I want to bring up the "big boxes"
Having bought the Gale Force Nine reedition of the old Dune game last February, which was supposed to be a movie tie-in (complete with a Legendary logo), I'm a little salty that a new version, more movie tie-in, got out the same years (and with weird rules simplification on top of that)

Watching all the previews and when I saw In Too Deep, I was excited because I backed it on Kickstarter and still waiting for it. But hearing the preview and its tone… I am not sure it sounds at all a positive one. Looking at it now, it seems to be a messy, unfair and rather complicated game which I am not entirely sure they are on board with and it has actually put me off having the game. I am not sure if it is just me or not but it has made me less excited to play it. Will still give it a go, but I get the feeling it will be a game I might regret.
I've played 4 games of the preview version up on TTS, it doesn't feel at all messy or unfair to me. What I dislike about it most is that the player interaction is mostly opaque: whatever you do will influence other players' goals, but you can't really tell in what way. But that aside, I'm very excited to play the full game!

So, that giant pyramid is cool and all, but it is not terrably well justified, is it? I mean it's basically just another track, no need at all to be a massive 3D structure. Seems a bit like a thing that is just there to draw in interest.

I'm an experienced gamer but the people I play with are very VERY casual. Sadly, as much as I adore Galaxy Trucker, the others just can't get their heads around the cards and iconography (they just confuse themselves when they try to view the cards in the rush). So while I see fun in the events that happen in the second phase, they only see frustration. It's a shame because it means it never gets played.
I'm not a casual player by far, and gosh... I hate this game with the bottom of my heart. I don't see the point in watching the game playing by itself in the second part. And like your friends, I feel only frustration.
I think we occupy different space, but if you’re looking for a solid sandbox style strategy game that plays 1-6 players right out the standard box then Quests & Cannons is where it’s at. $60 gets you the full game $100 for deluxe (no gameplay adds)
Yucatan is one of those games thats so visually busy it puts me off even trying it. i lost track of the what anythign was supposed to do while watching that bit haha. Ugh Sea of Legends, games with apps are a no haha. The last game sound slike a better version of Talisman (which is just boring fantasy monopoly) so that look salright but th ehumour/reference to pop culture are tiring.

However good that Dune game is I legit don't want it based solely on the not-even-very-pretty screenshots of the actors. Like A) those hero tokens look like ass, but B) there is sooooo much exceptional Dune art - why would I want a surprisingly-lazily-photoshopped version of some random actor who played a role in a movie I may or may not like, and may or may not have even been cast well? Especially when the cast and movie completely sand-blasted (ha) the very very important Islamic basis of so much of the books away. Like, without Islam, the books wouldn't exist as they do. It's hugely important to nearly everything about the world-building of Arrakis, the plot of Paul's martyrdom, and basically everything the Fremen do.

Why would anyone Why would anyone want to sit down for likely hours on end, get into all those rules and to engage with something that tries to continuously does all it can to portray itself as something that doesn't even like itself? And who was the poor sod who had to have their honestly great art misused for this nonsense?
Oh man I hated that new Dune movie... and this instant remake of the amazing original board game feels like a terrible betrayal! Which... I guess is kind of in keeping with the theme, hmmmm

@@thonktank1239 The character dialogue was pretty horrible, he tried to shoehorn in alot of the context by making characters say a bunch of stuff out loud that made them sound dumb and robotic. There really wasn't much to care about, because he tried to do too much in too little time we never got a chance to actually feel any emotional connection to any part of the story. He didn't take the time to really flesh out any of the more interesting themes (like racism), there were hardly any people in the city and we didn't get to care about them at all... All the flashforwards looked like perfume commercials. The voice over was extremely cringy and unnecessary, treating us like toddlers. Villeneuve apparantly never learned to tell by showing. And the one thing he was supposed to be a master at, the cinematography, was extremely bland and boring.. just a chain of sci-fi tropes with no character or originality to speak of.

Often I've heard the redeeming argument that the book is unadaptable, that's not really an argument because in that case just making the movie was a bad choice (which might be so). Otherwise, my humble suggestion (as not a film director) would have been to focus on a much smaller part of the story. However, I think it wouldn't even be that hard to atleast do it a little better.. For instance, instead of making Arrakeen one ridiculous mess of brutalist architecture, make it into an actual living city with people in it.. Wouldn't have taken more time in the movie.

I think that was a theme with the series as a whole. They always had those unnecessarily big, flashy showpieces.

We were having a good time with it until the app crashed. We got a good way into our second game though, before the app crashed again.

I'm a bit confused, what's actually different about the new Dune? It sounds identical to the other GF9 edition, aside from the art.
It's a streamlined, 4 player version, plays in a 90-120 minutes.
