Chinese EV Brands Want to Dominate Global South Auto Markets

- Enthusiasm for electric vehicles is waning in both the U.S. and China, but that is definitely not the case in other parts of the world where EV adoption rates are steadily rising. In fact, at the Bangkok Motor Show this week, Chinese EV brands are grabbing all of the attention.
Throughout the Global South, Chinese EV brands are expanding their presence in both manufacturing and sales. And unlike U.S.-made EVs that are largely expensive luxury vehicles, the Chinese brands are focusing on small, affordable cars that are within the price range of consumers in Asia, Africa and Latin America, among other places.
Lei Xing, a longtime China automotive journalist and host of the China EVs & More Podcast, joins Eric to discuss why Chinese automakers are looking to developing countries to drive EV sales.

When the US is ahead, it advocates free market...but when the US can't compete, it puts up tariffs. That's the USA!!!
The top international hypocrite, liar, thief and cheat.
I agree 100%..... like the B.S. going on about Tik Tok in the USA.....😁🤣😁
Who cares. The US is building walls to protect its domestic players. The US is losing in the global market to the Chinese.
China has always put up tariffs and forced tech transfer. Why can’t us also install tariffs in defense? In fact many people argue us reacts too late
Yes. Exactly. That is called HYPOCRISY, DOUBLE STANDARDS and HEGEMONY.
China is the only country to build affordable electric vehicles. Europe, Japan, and America don't. If Western manufacturers want to compete. They better offer the same price as the Chinese. That's the market.
Their greed for higher profit by the US regime managed western countries and their manufacturers is the reason for their uncompetitive products.
As if Germany does not subsidize their own auto industry. In China, both domestic and foreign auto get the same tax credit. Tesla alone got free land and tax-free for x amount of years. They're wholly owned and don't have to enter a Joint Venture. Most Tesla cars sold worldwide are from the Shanghai Gigafactory.
According to the data released by China Automobile Industry Association, from January to February, 2024, China exported 822,000 automobiles, up 30.5% year-on-year.
I want the low cost Chinese EV. But my government is doing everything to block it
We are a completely controlled people in US. We are kept from many things. I would also like to buy a Chinese auto.😢
Same in the UK. Chinese EV's debated in Parliament, then lo and behold, China is accused of hacking data, cue sanctions. Just another ruse to justify protectionism.
U $ always claimed that it is a FREE country with a FREE market economy. Is it? 😂
True. They restrict many things for political reasons. They are not considering the American people's benefit. @@mythbusterthe6749
Most common people don't care much about politics and considers expenses and living costs matters most. The US is just playing with fire and politics with their own people's money, savings and living costs.
WEST: "We will stop producing ICE cars by 2035."
China outsells WEST in EV.
WEST: "We will continue producing ICE cars beyond 2100!"
Its kind funny to listen to this debate and remembering how in early 80's there was an uprising in US against cars from Japan. My first Japanese car was 1987 Acura Legend and in 1992 I had to make a sales visit to GM transmission plant in Parma OH. When I pulled in to a parking lot there was a huge sign warning people driving Japanese cars to park in the last row of parking lot even though parking lot was 80% empty. There was a similar sign at Ford's casting plant in Brook Park OH while I saw Fords employees driving Jaguars. Obviusly that was ok because Ford owed Jaguar at that time. Honda has been making cars in OH for 40+ years but yet its refered to as foreign. Don't know for sure but I'll bet GM imports more cars to US from China than Honda. Protectionism comes in all types of forms and shapes.
How does that match with the double digit growth of NEV sales in China though, I wonder. I've yet to meet a Chinese NEV owner who prefers gasoline cars. Chinese EVs are just so far beyond any gasoline car
Chinese EV car sales indeed have shot up like a rocket in recent years but the data's pretty clear that the market is slowing now, which may only be temporary, but it's definitely slowing: www.caixinglobal.com/2024-01-10/growth-in-chinas-ev-market-is-set-to-slow-for-a-second-year-102154811.html
@@chinaglobalsouth the article expects 25% growth for 2024. That's still extreme growth in my book. Of course with a growing base the % growth declines. I still expect NEV replacing gasoline cars completely by 2030
Eric, you BIAS! You don’t mentioned Tesla also get subsidies and export to EU!
You also ignore that US Bailed out their auto industry- that is also kind of subsidized. US also put 25% duty also kind of subsidized by protection auto profit since import truck from Japan.
American will talk free trade when they have advantage but scream through the roof when China play better than in their own game.
Stop BS!
US talks fair play and level playing field, but in practice they prefer a monopoly in their own favour.
👉 the west going backwards while china marching forward 👍
Yes. The US and the west is still dreaming and in deep sleep. They prefer to spend more on weapons, military and wars rather than on their own people and they want to force others like china to follow them. Well, China is very wide awake and are NOT sleeping and they will NOT follow nor listen to the US and western ideology.
Seems to me all countries practice industrial policies in one form or another. In the west, they are done but with more subtleties. Airbus would not be where it is without huge government subsidies at the early stages.
Japan and Korea would not be industrial powerhouses without industrial policies, support and subsidies from their government.
So China’s story is no different. For developing countries to successfully move up the value chain, it cannot be done without effective industrial policies and support from their governments. That’s just the way it is.
This is well understood by the developed countries. That’s why they made “rules” to outlaw developing countries from applying industrial policies and government subsidies. That way the west can preserve their dominant position indefinitely.
I think its great that consumers around the world are able to enjoy innovative and high quality NEVs made in China at affordable prices. What is there not to like. Legacy auto makers will just have to move off the dime, be creative, innovative, cut cost and work harder to compete and stay in business. If necessary, get assistance from their governments as well.
Very well said and very factual.
The global south markets seem like a natural fit for the PRC EV makers. like China, these markets generally have faster rates of economic growth & lower income consumers (relative to developed markets such as the EU & US), so Chinese companies are used to competing in such environments. Moreover, the lack of electrical infrastructure & electrical generation capacity is yet another opportunity to drive demand for China's BRI projects. The relative lack of low-end competition from more established US/EU/Japanese car brands is yet another plus. Finally, from a geopolitical perspective, many of these global south countries do not have much of an auto industry to speak of, so they're importing cars either way. For the most part, global south countries also do not have geopolitical ambitions of establishing or maintaining hegemony. Therefore, importing lower cost Chinese cars just means they get more bang for their buck, not to mention making their markets more competitive & driving down prices for all vehicles.
The problem that the US-led west has is that it can't compete with china. When they developed there industries there was no WTO or other rules to play by. They then created those institutions and rules without consulting the majority of the countries around the globe. They made the rules in such a way that heavily favored their at the time current state of affairs in regards to industry. China goes and says that they are not planning along with this. Where was the environmental protection worries when the west developed their industries? The government of China is responsible for its own population and they are doing what they think is best for their country. So does the US and somehow the US-led west gets all upset when china does the same? When it comes to subsidies they have the gall to complain about china subsidizing its industry? What about the subsidies that the US companies have profited from? The gains get privatized and the losses socialized in the US. Aren't those subsidies resulting in a trickle up economy enhancing the inequality in the states? Bailouts and co come to mind. What about the German Automakers? They have enjoyed subsidies over the years. Worst of all they have even used of forced labour during the Hitler years. Either POW's or the jews. BMW had no problem with that. Now that they had all of these supports they now somehow have a problem with the chinese government supporting its industry? What does the EU and the States want? They want china to use slaves? Are they then ok with it? Ridiculous. Engage with china and the global south and redo the rules if you want the rest of the world to live by them.
The subsidies whine is ridic. All industrial nations built infrastructure and promoted their industry.
Talking about subsidies, it doesn't work in the US or Europe because it will end up in the pockets of corrupt politicians, and the consumers will pay the same price.
The biggest issue the USA has is Chinas influence and trade in Africa the resources needed to power the Chinese Ev and other systems come directly from Africa. Europe is failing to compete.
since when you will get mad of something selling cheaper? what happened?
I want a Chinese EV in Canada, love BYD
I don't...I want our data to stay in the west just like China's doesn't allow their data to go outside China....
Very informative and well balanced. What got me started s that the Western governments, US, EU, in general are such a convenient free marketer, arguing for open market when they have a competitive edge and closing their own markets when they don’t accusing the competitors of subsidies while doing the same themselves. The Economist had an article a couple of issues ago arguing that the West should welcome the more affordable and better EVs from China. If the Chinese government wants to subsidize the western buyers it’s good for the buyers.
Western subsidies to their chip industry by the western countries, "The Japanese figure of 3.9 trillion yen ($25.7 billion) over three years equals 0.71% of gross domestic product. The U.S. is spending more in value terms -- the equivalent of 7.1 trillion yen over five years -- but its share of GDP is 0.21%, less than a third of Japan's."
Trump is right about the EVs it's going to be the least thing to worry about if he's not elected.. And I'm not a MAGA Trumpeter🎉!!
Market dominance is a function of product price. If China EVs dominate any market, it is incidental because China pricing policy ensures the products are affordable to the masses for their enjoyment. Consequently they are sold at a deep discount to equivalent products offered by the West. China marketing strategy is to induce volume sales to make up for much smaller profit margins. High prices attract copycats and encourage new entrants to market.
China does not have enough oil, of course solar is the way to go, just a bit quicker for China, but solar is the future for all
The Chinese can sell Mexican car production to South America, Europe and Africa.
How fickle-minded are the US leaders, they change at every turn of events!
Tesla in Chinà sales get the subsidy as well😂
The guy with the best price, best service, best over all product gets the market. Bad luck hypocritical America, the Chinese Seal appears equal to or better than Tesla equivalent but the Seal is seven thousand or so dollars cheaper.
Build in Mexico and cheap as 2nd hand top-line imports in S America. Building the electric grid is local will.
Eric should not be allowed to vilify the success of the China NEV industry.
Just curious, how exactly did I “vilify the success of the China NEV industry?” - Eric
They have the tech, they can build their own EVs.
The American and European have been subsidising their industries through out these years and until today. Just study all the recent acts of the American congress, they are pure subsidies.
We are hiring American you just need to cross Mexico border and live there
USA AND ALL WESTERN COUNTRIES GOVERMENT SHOULD FOR FOLLOW CHINA 🇨🇳 ! CHINA CARES FOR ITS MANUFACTURERS AND PEOPLES ! CHINA ✌️ 🇨🇳
American cars Ford...GM...Tesla...their spare part are expensive😂
Byd is also building hybrids !
The US also subsidizing EVs, tax credits etc. the stupidity of rollout here is terrible charging infrastructure. That’s democrats for you. Government is useless, wasteful, corrupt. At least china’s government makes progress without the beauracracy. Maybe the US should move away from democracy if their complaining.
US just has one more political party than the China.
Don't blame China, blame the politicians and American CEOs that outsourced all the middle class jobs away for greater profits. Now it's coming back to haunt you.
US does not electrify their cars, that's debatable. But not electrify motorcycles, bicycles or scooters at all?!
The Chinese EVs're technologically more advanced and they're really really cheap in price! Ask every American twice, do they really hate such a good deal?!
Sure. They love a deal. Who doesn't love a good deal, right? But they're also concerned that the same thing Wal Mart did to small communities when it comes to town and decimates local competitors and leaves very little behind, is going to happen to the auto industry that provides some of the best blue collar jobs in the country. American workers were told by governing elites during the Clinton years that NAFTA was going to be great for them, it wasn't. They were told that shifting manufacturing to China was going to be great for them. It wasn't. So, now the public and politicians are understandably a bit skeptical about the arrival of Chinese-made cars that would probably hit the US auto industry very hard. And that doesn't make the US unique at all. A lot of countries, including China, shelter critical industries from foreign competition. Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to defend the US here (they can do that themselves), I'm just trying to say there's more to the story than just low priced cars. -- Eric
@@chinaglobalsouth Let not only the EVs come, but also the factories. Use them to build our own industry from ground up again!
@@garyevergreen5035 That's a great point. Just the same way that Kia, BMW and Hyundai all set up shop in the USA. That could be an interesting requirement: "sure, you can sell your cars in the US, they just have to be made here." That was basically the deal that the Chinese made with US automakers if they wanted to access the China market back in the day. -- Eric
I want a Chinese EV!
a soldier who doesn't want to be a general is not a good soldier
So no matter who is in office the outcome will be the same.
Cross the board , not only EVs , almost all products from China is much much inexpensive then others , that's why my house full of Chinese made products instead of the expensive products from other countries such as Japan , Korea & etc .
Crazy....
Sales of millions of vehicles into China. All major manufacturing in America and Germany of vehicles might be reduced with the same tariffs on those imports. Watch and loose billions of dollars of sales into China.
China imports over 10 million vehicles a year.
Shalom
Sure. But most of the foreign vehicles in China are made domestically through joint ventures with state owned enterprises so any move to crush foreign auto brands in China would have a significant impact on domestic players as well. - Eric
@@chinaglobalsouth where do Cadillac, Ford, BMW, Mercedes, VW, Stepvan etc come from in China. Suppliers are from the USA and EU with over US$200 Billion a year of imports into China.
@@DenisDeCharmoy-fl3ht Those brands do import some of their stock to China but it's only a small fraction of what they sell in China. The overwhelming majority of foreign auto brands in China manufacture the bulk of their product with local joint venture partners. This is common knowledge that's listed in detail even on Wikipedia: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automotive_industry_in_China
Thats means American have to buy more more expensive EVs in order to save the inefficient and credibly expensive EVs ?!! If so , good luck America . coz local EVs will lose competitiveness if they want to sell oversea and there will collapse eventually .
Good bye America bye bye
I think build quality will also affect the decision to buy or not to buy a product. Particularly, something made in China, which have a reputation for poor build quality, untested fair service or warranty agreement, and a government that snoops on the user. EV are heavily software driven system; perfect for snooping or even deliberate sabotage while driving (can you survive a sudden, unexplained brake failure because you're critical of the CCP)? If you buy a Chinese EV, definitely buy at your own risk. Not your kids as well.

🤣🤣🤣🤣like the Baltimore bridge?🤣🤣🤣🤣
You're a paranoid sucker ... of US fear-mongering propaganda!!! 😂😂😂
Don't buy then,who cares,just another China hater😂
Even if it's free, I would not want to own a Chinese EV car. I lived in China for 30 years. Everything they build is unethical. I have friends in China who own BYD cars. Sometimes, the company uses theirs cars to do real-world scenarios for testing. i.g. remotely inject a piece of software to play the CCP songs, and/or lock the car from starting.
You really expect to be believed? Is the sun rising from the west?
@KayyHong Well, any lie is possibly with the CCP. Just like the South China Sea.
Lived in China for 30 year my foot!! LOL
