As someone who has played semi pro poker out of a port town on and off since I was 18 I can say that fishing boat is a terrible idea for a gambler. Most of the people who I played against were people who came off of boats and were playing poker with their crew mates for months on end. If you want to help a gambler put them to work in a factory. Too exhausting to gamble regularly I've found
Working on a ship for a month or more is also frequent in France, and I think in the UK. It is another kind of rehab, with the same purpose: being isolated from your addiction(s), and learning to live and interact with other humans.
Fame and attention is one hell of a drug, and it’s a drug you might not even realize you’re taking. These people doing whatever they can to get peoples attention is really no different from junkies doing whatever they can to get their next hit.

the fishing boat idea is actually amazing. my uncle had terrible problems w meth and when he finally moved away to WV, he got a job on an oil rig. he’s been sober ever since and started a family out there. it sounds extreme, but people in extreme circumstances need extreme change.

But most the time he’s trying to sell you his medication and other goods of his. I actually bought a Saturday night special from him😊. @@cardzbmurkin08 I'm confused why you're insulting them? They're right, gambling addicts are unable to focus on the bigger picture of how much money they're losing and get high off the small wins even when they're draining all their money. If that wasn't the case, gambling addiction wouldn't be a thing.
@@cardzbmurkin08 It's comically easy to be a better person than a gambling addict. Sympathy is for selfish people who don't actually want to help others. If you actually cared you'd be honest with them and tell them they're being idiots. All your sympathy does is encourage terrible behavior and make you think you're a good person, when in reality you're contributing to their suffering. Sympathy has always been worthless. There's never a time in history where sympathy helped anyone. It doesn't happen. It's a way for lazy and selfish people to boast about how good of a person they are, nothing more. Empathy can inspire action. Sympathy feeds the ego of those who never act.

My cousin was an addict for over 20 years. Has had nearly 10 children, none of which he raised, been to rehab 6 times and failed after each stint and has nearly OD’d a couple times. Nothing worked to get him clean. A family member inherited a farm in the middle of nowhere and I mean like a 3 hour drive to any sort of civilization besides other farms. They sent him there and told him that if he ever comes back before he’s clean, they’re throwing him in jail. He’s been there for 2 years now and is clean, has a job as the farm manager and is getting his life back on track for the first time in 2 decades. Your idea is this guys best bet!

People who "hit" at the casino don't think of all the money they have put in. They are like "i won $84!" But they don't think of the $2000 they lost to get there.
My father had a client who, along with his wife, were “recreational” gamblers. My father lectured him repeatedly they needed to stop, but they considered it their entertainment. One year they lost $110,000 and won $105,000. You’d think ok, at least it was only $5,000, but because of how the US records winnings as income and doesn’t measure losses equally, they had to claim an additional $110,000 as income in their taxes without enough to offset it. They ended up moving into a higher tax bracket, had to pay a higher percentage in taxes, and lost their three college age children financial scholarships. It was terrible but they wouldn’t stop.

Atozy has a great point, having someone work on a fishing boat for months on end sounds like a surprisingly effective rehabilitation method. It removes them from their ability to indulge in their addiction while also humbling them and providing them with money and some life skills.
I used to watch shows and documentaries about men that work on ships for months and weeks on end. It’s not good. They are depressed and constantly scared and on guard of one bad wave ending them.
Yeah, his home set up looked really rough, the little we could see. I don’t understand how anyone can tolerate sleeping on an air mattress for more than a few days. (Of course it’s do-able, but that would just make everything else in your life harder, if it affects your sleep.)

What kind of bank lets you overdraft like that? I can't go over fifty dollars before they start charging me 20 dollars a day till the overdraft is paid.
Plenty of banks would allow me to overdraft $100 like 7 years ago. So many, even with new accounts as long as I had a job when making the account. Not sure if anything changed since then, and glad I wouldn't know. Rock bottom sucks. One time I overdrafted $1 for a cigar and went to the hospital and left with an overdraft of hundreds of dollars so they make their money back in some ways!
This total is probably reflecting overdraft fees.. my bank will tack on $50 a day to the balance so it looks like a total like that instead of a breakdown.

I think it depends on how earnestly one approaches the work: If you're going to start deep-sea fishing because you want positive change, you'll find what you're looking for in one form or another. If you're just running away from your problems, those problems will be there to meet you on-shore.

12:48 I fished in Alaska for a few years. There were, indeed, plenty of folks escaping their substance and/or gambling problems for a time, but you always have to return to shore eventually. In my observation it’s just fuel for an even bigger blowout. So, addicts will save up $15k to $30k US during a fishing season, get back to society, and blow the whole wad in a couple weeks or less on (rhyme with me now) rugs, cookers, and shambling.

He's always one bad day away from trashing anything that's within arm's reach because he's an overgrown toddler...
I mean, not really? For one thing, recording artists don't live at the studio or get to be alone in it so there's only so much damage you can do to one. But more importantly, record deals are about whether the artist is able to sell records/get streams, which usually comes from real artistry and a real fanbase but it can also come from being the talk of the moment and having listeners in the short term because of the hype. Viral sensations have been known to get them just for being viral sensations and that's probably what this guy was going for, but it didn't pan out because it wasn't interesting or viral enough.

Here's some advice for those of you who grew up with parents like mine. They were in perpetual debt and never saved anything. You MUST have an emergency fund and be able to at least pay your bills and have some left over cor wither play or saving. Start small, but saving is addictive. In just a few years I've packed away nearly 30k (a one year emergency fund for my family and I) and once you get to that point, as long as you don't get yourself into stupid debt just save up and buy whatever your little heart desires. Stress and guilt free!

But yeah, you REALLY ARE going to need it one day, so it IS best to have it for that day! If it never comes, hey at least you were prepared! It's one of those "better to have it and not need it, then to need it, but not have it" affairs!

It was nice and all, but trust me, I paid for all those items, it might have been COMPed, but the amount of money me and boys dropped at these casinos, we PAID for all those fine dining and suites. There is a reason why these casinos are sooo rich, and the odds are always in their favor. This is why the casino wants you to stay if you are winning because they know eventually you will give it back.

People grossly misunderstand those with addiction problems as people who don't know better. That is very wrong. It's a matter of brain chemistry, not knowledge. Understanding it makes no difference. It's a desiese. Knowing you have cancer does not make the cancer go away. At best, it can give a fighting chance for those with proper support.
My dad had a minor gambling addiction and managed to stop himself after he took a step back and looked at the finances. The first step was to stop gambling with friends he or just start observing how people do it like the roulette. He needs friends who will hold him accountable for his own actions or rope him into charity work where he can learn a skill like habitat for humanity and become a day laborer.
You should NEVER gamble hoping to gain money, its just gonna lead to disaster, if you walk into a casino with 100 then think of it as paying 100 for the casino experience, the minute you start to think "I can make some money from this" or you lose abit and think "Ok got to break even tho, so I'll remake what I lost and then dip" the seed is planted, you should walk out a casino either having gotten lucky and made a bit and made the smart decision to dip right away or decided to go all in on the experience and walk out having lost what you decided to take with you thinking "Ah that was fun" preferably with a few friends since that increases the odds of enjoying the experience for the experience and not for the money.
I had a roommate back in the day, 30 years ago. She never paid the rent and was always broke. 6 months later...One day she invited me to go with her to the casino and i saw her spending 200 euros in the slot machines, then 500 more 😮. I couldn't believe it. After the 700 she asked me 100 to recover what she lost. Nope girl, stop it please.. After losing 1000 in total I LOST IT ! I was angry, disappointed and told her : So that's what you're doing with your money !? I'm not your mother. I'm done, get out of my house by the end of the month" She found a man to live with about a week later.
I don't understand the allure of gambling. The whole experience is anxiety inducing, knowing that you're probably going to lose money. I gambled once in my life with my ex husband, bet $20 on blackjack and broke even. That was all I could take and I never did it again, never wanted to either.
I have known a few poker players who can regularly turn a profit. But these are edge cases like people who can make a career out of playing basketball.
@Mereologist poker playing requires skills, intelligence. The saddest is thinking the games of luck/chance will be profitable. The machine decides for them but the faith in their good luck is over the top.
If you are truly smart you will know all casinos are rigged to make money, and if you make too much money, you get arrested for cheating. I have an old casino grade slot machine and i learned how it was rigged to pay out x-money after x-money was spent. Many people were murdered for casino debts in the bad days of Las Vegas. I have gambled before knowing full well gambling is rigged. I put a cash card with $200 on it. NOT!!! my bank card. If the cash card cashed out, it was over. No risk to bank balance. I stuck to just the penny slots. I got up a couple hundred each week I played, played them for a month just once a week. Won anywhere from $150 to about $220. per week just mindlessly clicking a button. Couple of old geezers taught me a strategy that would get you to win, and it worked. I made about a grand. For someone like me that works minimum wage and struggles just to see a grand that was a huge boost. I never spent the entire $200 i initially loaded on the card, and the winnings would go directly to my bank account and not the card, that way i wasnt infinitely spending my winnings. i never touched the skill based games, the roulette, none of that. people will shit down 60k in poker just to think they are a better card player than the rest of the players. you can 100% go to a casino and win money, but its not like the movies. if you know how to beat the risk of losing money, and not spend your winnings immediately, you can make a good amount of money just by nickel and diming $50-$100 wins over several months time.
10:55 So the first thing we'd need to confront is the gambling. Gambling games use what are known as a variable ratio of reinforcement in order to make you more likely to engage in the desired behavior in order to obtain said reinforcement. You can try using several forms of therapy, but you want to understand the cause of it. Once you determine the cause, we can create an intervention to subvert the behavior. This could be by using incompatible behaviors, an alternative behavior, or other behaviors entirely. The goal is to reduce the gambling first, then gradually fade in more life changes.
If we're counting scratch offs as gambling, I do it pretty regularly. Only difference is I regulate it. I don't play until all my bills are paid and I have over $100 to mess around with, and I only buy the amount of tickets based on what it'll round me towards. If I got $124 on me, I'm only buying 4 tickets and I'll buy more tickets based on what I win within those 4 tickets. If If I hit $10 or more, I don't continue. That's just me though.
My dad was a compulsive gambler & things were pretty rough growing up. This is upsetting to see someone in this state, and I hope he finds peace in his life.
Even if he managed to get a rap career going, the second the studio realises he's a cash sink hole, they'll drop him. People don't realise when you get signed by a studio to rap/sing etc, you're in debt to them till you earn enough to pay them back and excess cash made is yours, then you start to earn money once out of debt, if your first album doesn't do well you go into debt and stay there, the debt is for advertising, studio time, audio editing, beats to use, cd production, music video production and potential merchandise to sell you. You become a product till you're out of debt, and if you're bad product you won't earn a cent.

I think it depends on how earnestly one approaches the work: If you're going to start deep-sea fishing because you want positive change, you'll find what you're looking for in one form or another. If you're just running away from your problems, those problems will be there to meet you on-shore.

I feel that way for the millions of America who use The Affordable Care Act and love it but they voted for Trump cause they were anti-"Obamacare" which they, 'hate'. Well done Maga! Now good look finding insurance if you have a pre existing condition.
or ....they actually believed that other countries pay our Trump imposed tariffs.... now they just realized they'd been lied to, corporations will increase their prices the 25% and pass along the tariff costs to us.
Then Trump said in interviews, "Yeah, No, no, we're not bringing down prices, it's impossible to do that" because the Prez doesn't control the prices of eggs, as democrats told them repeatedly.
Then most importantly Trump's going to raise retirement age to 69 and cut benefits to people who paid into the system all their adult lives so they can cut taxes even more for corporations and the top 1% It's impossible to argue with uneducated, racist, greedy and ignorant.
yeah it is wild... i have heard that gambling addiction is darker than even substance addiction and didn't know exactly what that meant... but he sleeps on an air mattress, when he showed himself making cereal, the cereal, milk, and bowl he used, were all Dollar Tree stuff. I got decades of opiate addiction behind me and I've, let me see, never been that low. Always had a bed. Always paid my bills first. Always had food. And at least I was guaranteed the high I was looking for, every time. Also never did any antisocial nonsense like wrecking stores..... why is he even worrying about braces when he doesn't have a real bed though?
12:48 I fished in Alaska for a few years. There were, indeed, plenty of folks escaping their substance and/or gambling problems for a time, but you always have to return to shore eventually. In my observation it’s just fuel for an even bigger blowout. So, addicts will save up $15k to $30k US during a fishing season, get back to society, and blow the whole wad in a couple weeks or less on (rhyme with me now) rugs, cookers, and shambling.
Alaskan here, and you are 100% correct. Seen all too many go in this exact way
Seriously, I hate it when people act like "hard work" is how you deal with addiction. My brother was a milwright, my dad is a milwright. All hard work did was give them access fo more money when they had an off day
Ah yes, the subway incident where he trashes his work place thinking it'll get him a record deal... No studio on the planet would let this guy within 100 miles of their millions of dollars worth of recording equipment after seeing how much he disrespects his employers work spaces... He's always one bad day away from trashing anything that's within arm's reach because he's an overgrown toddler...
He would likely break in and sell all the equipment for $500 to cash out at the casino. Liability risk.
Merry Christmas, Atozy!!!
While it is an employee's job to keep the store cleaned up, it is also the job of the customer to not make the employee's job harder by being an asshole.
This guy and people like him are part of the reason why retail workers get so stressed out. The sheer lack of respect to the store and the employee's who work there.
I think he was employed by the stores he caused messes in.
He worked at that CVS….
Hes an employee.
This is why I don’t believe in eVrYoNe sHoUld wOrK rEtAiL to “learn respect”.

Wrong. People being dicks doesn’t justify employees destroying property.
The thing is, this guy is garbage on both sides. He started out as the employee and from how he acted whatever any customer might have told him he definitely had coming.
I feel more sorry for the workers and managers who had to deal with the property damage he caused. He acknowledges the gambling addiction but not the wrongs he caused chasing “clout”.
11:48 I agree with the boats. I live here in Alaska. There aren’t any casinos here and a bunch of jobs that will have you in remote areas with the only thing to focus on is work.
I agree, my parents never saved. I’ve saved £600 a month for the past 10 years and am more than happy I’ve don’t that. Saving is addictive.
Yeah, me and my mother made this type of mistake and thanks to my shithead of a little brother last year, she and I almost went bankrupt (SHE almost went bankrupt from HIS action, I almost went so saving HER from it) we're slowly building ourselves back up with me mostly taking the advice you just illustrated as I realize how STUPID I was to not have this for myself! But yeah, you REALLY ARE going to need it one day, so it IS best to have it for that day! If it never comes, hey at least you were prepared! It's one of those "better to have it and not need it, then to need it, but not have it" affairs!
i invest 250 in a roth ira and save another 250 in a e-fund

I used to go to the casino couple times a week(mostly Biloxi, but some times Vegas), and we used to get treated to all the best restaurants, VIP at clubs, finest rooms.
Thanks for your Service 😂😂😂

People grossly misunderstand those with addiction problems as people who don't know better. That is very wrong. It's a matter of brain chemistry, not knowledge. Understanding it makes no difference. It's a desiese. Knowing you have cancer does not make the cancer go away. At best, it can give a fighting chance for those with proper support.

I'm done, get out of my house by the end of the month"
She found a man to live with about a week later.
I love how you were saying he’s going to be alright then after trying to think of ideas you busted out with “Idk he’s cooked” I’m dead 🤣😂
6:59 I legit didnt even know you could be overdrafted by almost a G. At that point, isnt it a credit card😅
I have an over draft of 5k if I want I can use it I have before and reported it stolen only done that once lol
I don't think he over drafted a "checkings (sic)" account that much.
You can if you use your bank account / routing number instead of your debit card.
I’ve never understood the appeal of gambling the chance of winning is so low and it’s not even fun imo
You just didn't gamble enough. 99% of gamblers quit right before they win the big prize.
Same. I don’t gamble. Fiance does but with the expectation that he’ll lose.
It’s better to not understand it. It’s a really bad addiction. I don’t understand it either, so it’s best to avoid doing it.
That's why it's called the "idiot tax."
