Been waiting on this one! my grandfather was in a Kempeitai unit in charge of censoring the sailors mail from Kaga, along with several other, smaller support ships.
Dear family, I am very "happy". Yesterday we did battle with the American fleet at Midway. It went incredibly "well". The ship has been "showered in glory". Many of my friends are "heroes". I have been transferred to an "party" center where we are kept "well fed". The future looks "great". I don't know "when" I will see you again. Please pray for "the emperor". Your son Hiro.
@@navyreviewer One story he can recall (still kicking at 104) is hiding the letter of a young ensign who had wrote to his father about the war being useless and how if the emperor really cared about the people. He should seek peace immediately, knowing something like this could possibly lead to him getting executed, nonetheless arrested. He didn't report, held onto it until the ensigns ship returned to Kure for repairs..took him to the side and told him to never write anything of the sort again, and that he was lucky he had recieved the letter, and not some hard liner who would've alerted their commanding officer after the first paragraph, As far as he knows, the ensign (later a full LT) eventually died on IJN Shinano
One comment; at 4:30, it is stated that the Kaga had twelve boilers, eight oil-fired and six coal-fired....that totals 14 the last time I counted! Otherwise, a great evaluation.
