- Chemistry professor Andreas Fath swims the length of the Danube to raise awareness about plastic waste. Four tonnes of microplastics end up in the Black Sea via the Danube every day - with consequences for people and the environment.
But the campaign is more than just PR: every day, his team takes water samples and analyses them for the microplastic particles, tire fragments and drug residue. The pollutants decimate biodiversity in the Danube. In human beings, microplastics weaken the immune system and can even cross the blood-brain barrier. Andreas Fath refuses to accept this - also out of pure self-interest: he is an enthusiastic competitive athlete and would rather swim in clean waters. Carola Grau followed him on his journey from the source to the mouth of the Danube.

Wish their team better luck with impressing how serious the issue of Donau pollution is... I accompanied Mimi Hughes on a segment of her swim of the Donau for increased environmental awareness back in 2006, but it was hardly even noticed by the media or the public 😑

That's probably mistaken. Marathom swimmers, men and women, make something around 2hours in a 10km, that means they go around the 5s per hour. In a 10k, 20 or something like that, young elite competitors, of course, aren't at their full blast, though it's a pretty fucking high pace given the swim ends in a couple of hours. This old man is on it every F. day for a couple of weeks, this is just absurd. I also find it hard to believe that he can somehow cover 50+ km a day as its mentioned in the doc. Maybe i'm wrong, maybe he has strong current in his favor most of the way in. Don't know.. I would love any oficial comment on this.

@@bastawa, on my journey on the Danube, I found the water speed to be about 2 km/h. Of course, the river could be faster depending on how much it rains.
That means that the man's own speed would have to be about 6 km/h.
A body used to that type of repetitive effort would find no problem keeping the rhythm for days and even weeks.
A Romanian swimmer did the Danube in 2017. He counted on covering about 50 km/day; for various reasons, it took him not 60 days, as planned, but 89, which means his average was 32 km/day (instead of about 47).
Also, he did not use a neoprene suit, but only a pair of swimming trunks.
When I was young seeing all the relaxed crowds of families dumping trash on the beaches I was furious as if they were dumping trash on my doorstep. This is our sea all. From it we eat and from it we extract what benefits us in our medicines. From these seas there are thousands of species of living creatures and a bright, colorful world glowing beneath. Our waters are our lives.
Same. I wish all the trash that people wrongfully throw on the ground would end up inside their homes and beds instead.

I would never swim in danube. Dude you guys know Slovnaft? In Bratislava/slovakia they have outlet pipe of garbage straight into danube (i dont understand how that is legal) , smells like a gasoline , so much waste is thrown out there into danube...
Nobody mentions that. Only Serbia is mentioned. And NATO bombs, let's pretend it didn't happen.

Romania part of the Danube is doing better tho hence the most preserved Delta in Europe. Can't speak for all tho. And btw that comment isn't necessarely true. Eastern Europe sufferes of corruption. Corruption = instability and ignorance over important things such as this study. I'd love to see the results of all the samples gathered tho.

He startet in Germany so with the flow. I dont think upstream the hole Stream is possible.

Recycling alone won't do it. We need to change our approach to what we value about life, without letting it be dictated by the big producers and marketing campaigns of the world.
We do NOT all eat a credit card's worth of microplastics each week. This is a gross misinterpretation of the actual research. If you're trying to have a positive impact, sharing misinformation that supports the cause is unhelpful for everybody.
Read about the actual findings in the paper that orgininated this quoted-fact: "Estimation of the mass of microplastics ingested - A pivotal first step towards human health risk assessment". This paper is free to read online for those interested.

Ingesting 5g of plastic per week - all of us...
This is a bit of misimformation that went viral recently through seemingly credible news sources, but isn't reflective of the actual study that was being quoted. the study is titled "Estimation of the mass of microplastics ingested - A pivotal first step towards human health risk assessment" and they estimated that the average person may ingest 0.1-5 g per week. This is bleeding edge science which is based on scaling up most of the actual data that was used. The authors of the paper do NOT think that the average person ingests 5g of microplastics a week. It's possible that some people may ingest that much, based on current estimates, but certainly not everyone, or the average person.
I care a lot about caring for our environments, and for understanding our impacts, and the associated personal risks with accuracy. This is why I want to try to correct the misinformation presented by the star of this video. We can care deeply about microplastic issues without misrepresenting the scientific findings.

@@TheRety20 What you say highlights one of the problems with health impact studies. You need a large cross-sectional cohort, monitored over time to gain insight into chronic exposure. Trouble is these studies cost a lot to implement. I will check out the paper, thanks!
