NOTES MB03: 1. Rishis deliberately renouncing the comforts of society and leading an austere life in forests is unique to Sanatana Dharma. Because of their presence, even the natural enmity in forest also gets compromised due to their tapo-vaibhava (eg. Snake protecting frog, cats and mice eating the same bali, which means animal feed) near their Ashramas. There are great forests like Dandaka, Naimisha, Dharma, Champa, Saindhava, Pushkara, etc. which has Rishi-sparsha. 2. Rishis as requested by rishis, Brahma leaves a wheel and says where it stops, there Kali cannot have his bad effects, the place where Nemi (axis of wheel) falls, it's called 'Naimisharanya', upon asked by Rishis for a place to perform tapas without the bad influence of Kali. 88000 rishis gathered in Naimisha forest, prayed to goddess Saraswati. 3. Meditating is to secure carefully saving the vaangmaya. To protect Brahma gnana, Gods asked Dadichi, who meditated on it and secured it in his bones. His backbone became Vajrayudha that is in the hand of Indra, used to kill Vrittrasura. 4. Kulapati = Learnt and meditates on the Chatur Vedas with sruti, and 6 vedangas: Kalpa, Jyotisha, Nirukta, Siksha, Vyakarna and Chandassu, offers food to 11000 people daily, and worships Brahmarshis. Once 'Kulapati' Shounaka Muni was performing 12-year long 'Satra Yagam’. There are many types of Yagas. Satra yagam has no owners, which means they are not doing this yaga for a specific desire. They were doing it for world peace, and less/no effect of Kali (Other type eg: Dasaratha performed Ashwamedha yagam to get rid of his sins, now he was eligible for blessings of Gods, so he performed Ishti, which was Putrakameshti for sons). 5. Smriti (rishi’s compilation and explanation) follows Sruti (Vedas), like how calves follow cows (Kalidasa in Raghu Vamsham said so: Srute vivardham smriti anvagacchat). Puranas are for common man to hold on to the Sruti and Smriti easily. (eg. Ramayana teaches dharma through story of a great man who followed Sruti, so it’s purana). History vs Purana (Sargascha pratisargascha vamsho manvantaranicha.. ) eg. Bharata who was attached to a fawn, what happened in next life, is explained because Mahabharata is a Purana, which is easy for a common man to hold on to the principles of Smriti and Sruti. 6. Sauti (son of Sootha), whose real name is Ugrashravasa (the narrator till Vaishampayana comes), who was the son of Romaharshana to such a great place with such a great place. Once Prithu did a great yagna, from which a great man rose and became disciple of Vyasa, learnt all Puranas, Vedas and Sutras. He was doing pravachanas with a lot of involvement and projection of bhakti, hearing to him, people used to get goosebumps, so people called him Romaharshana. Since he rose from yagna, he was also called Sootha. So his son, Sauti (real name: Ugrashravasu). Sauti arrives and pays respect to all Brahmarshis in Naimisha forest, after which they ask him to explain about his teertha yatra, his experiences at different places he pilgrimed. He starts about Veda Vyasa, the Vishnu himself, the son of Parashura wrote the greatest epic, the highest manifestation of Dharma, science of morals and Vedanta, the greatest epic/poetry of itihasa, Mahabharata. He gave a bird view of all 18 parvas to see how interested (jignasha) the listeners are whether to elaborate into the full story. When rishis asked to elaborate, without which they couldn’t eat or sleep. 7. Sauti starts saying: Janamejaya, the emperor of Kuru dynasty was doing a yagna. Close to that yagna vatika comes a pup (young dog) which didn’t enter but only came close to the entrance. Janamejaya's brothers beat up that small dog, which goes crying to his mother (Devashuni meaning dog of Gods, with name ‘Sarameya’) says with grief (not a curse) that to those who are violent towards the weak, the kind, the tamed, and the unimportant (like a pup) would face irrational fears in near future. Dog says so and leaves the court. Janamejaya repents for his brothers’ deeds, and on a Gandharva’s suggestion of having a priest, he requests Shrutashravasa (a brahmin) to send his son, Somashravasa, who was a young man, a great tapasvi, controller of indriyas, scholar in Yama Niyamas, Vedas as his royal priest. On Janamejaya’s request, father agrees to send his son as the royal priest of Kuru dynasty.
