I visit KL twice a year to visit family and could not agree with your recommendations more! Iʻll have to try the Oasia Suites and the double decker bus tour next time. The Batu caves are definitely worth the trip. Great job on the video...but I think Iʻll leave my togs in Hawaii!

How to be a Malaysian ;-
    1. Wear jeans and flip-flops.
    2. Eat "Nasi Lemak" (Coconut Rice) or "Roti Canai" (Flatbread) for breakfast and drinking "Teh Tarik" (Hot Milk Tea).
    3. Stare at your phone all day.
    4. Eat "Nasi Campur" (rice dishes with chicken or beef and vegetables) for lunch.
    5. Ask for a discount. Say "Berapa" (how much), "Kurang lah sikit" (can I get a better deal), "Boleh" (accept), "Tak apa lah" (refuse nicely).
    6. Feeding stray cats who comes on your table by throw your food on the ground and let the cats help themselves.
    7. Calling someone older than you "Abang" (brother) for male and "Kakak" (sister) for female. Old man "Pak Cik" (uncle) and old lady "Mak Cik" (aunt). "Adik" for younger people.
    8. Love football even we have never reached the world cup tournament.
    9. Chillin' at the Mamak restaurant and have a drink after whatever you did like meeting, working, shopping, playing, whatever.
    10. Uptown (midnight market) - cheap stuffs from China. "Cuci mata" (hang out without buying anything).

No. 7, do not use uncle/pakcik and auntie/makcik unless you really have blood relation with the person, just stick to abang and akak for informal situations, and encik/sir or cik/ms/madam. Or just be silent on the part of how to address the person for eg just say hello, thank you, instead of saying hello sir, thank you madam etc

About how to dress for Kuala Lumpur : You can wear short shorts as many locals but because of its high Hindu and Muslim population, the community is going to be quite conservative. Wear anything you like, just not something as revealing as a cropped tank top. People tend to cover up their torsos more in KL rather than their legs so wearing shorts is perfectly fine.

Best time is during Ramadhan month. Just because it's the time the bazaars are open, more choices for food. Some dishes are just available during Ramadhan.
Second best is during Durian season (May to August), but it's not just for Durians there are also other fruits too eg mangosteen, you have to experience it.

You can buy a cheap poncho from daiso at about rm5 (or I think now daiso has gone to 5.90 per any item), should be good enough to last your 2 weeks or even 1 month in Malaysia if you are not too robust with it. However they probably suit small to medium sized person, I'm not sure if they are okay for 6 footers

You are right , weather is hot. You can escape the hot weather by taking a trip up the mountain to cameron highlands or genting highlands. Genting Highlands is about 45 minutes to an hour from Kuala Lumpur and do not miss out the gondola or cable car ride. Talking about food head to georgetown, Penang. In 2014 lonely planet rated it as the top food drstination in the world. I sincerely hope you return to malaysia soon. You are most welcome here in malaysia. By the way genting highlands is 1800 meters high and cameron highlands is 2000 meters both of this highlands above sea level . So weather is cool and refreshing. Cameron highlands is beautiful

@@travelforphoebe Ok may I suggest these places:
      1) Cameron Highlands/Fraser Hill - Both hill stations set up by the British. Cameron Highlands has more to see because of the tea, vegetables and strawberry farms.
      2) Perhentian, Kapas and Tioman Islands - Clear turqoise blue seas, perfect white sands and lots of reefs and marine life
      3) Malacca - Historical city with ancient Portuguese, Dutch and Straits Chinese influence.
      4) Penang - Home to the first British settlement and architecture in South East Asia. Great food and street art too.
      EAST MALAYSIA - MALAYSIAN BORNEO
      5) Sabah -
a)Kinabalu National Park - A perfect hiking trail up the tallest mountian in the region
      b) Kundasang Dairy Farm - An actual hill station with Friesian cow farming , with cheese and dairy products sold
      c) Sepilok Orang Utan and Sun Bear Conservation Centres - The only ones in the world that has succesfully bred new species of these animals in their natural habitat.
      d) Sipadan Islands - Voted best diving site in the world by Jacques Costeau and leading world divers
      6) Sarawak
      a) Bako National Park - A full fledged national park home to some endangered species of monkeys, orang utan and crocodiles.
      b) Gunung Mulu National Park - A UNESCO World Heritage Park with some of the most unique cave for formations in the world, including the world's largest cave chamber, the Sarawak Chamber

Yeah probably that's the 1 tip that strikes me the most because very very rarely youtubers include that aspect, and unfortunately we do see 1 or 2 foreign tourists in their hunt for fun they forget to think of others and simply proceed with conducts that are either hurtful or frowned upon by the locals. And I'm not saying just in Malaysia, but anywhere in the world 😔
Let's bring peace anywhere we go 👍😊

Hi Phoebe, thanks so much for the tips you've given. Coming from Australia here also, my friends and I will be there for only 1 night and 1 whole until our flight the next day. After seeing your video we have some questions for you to answer, if you have time haha.
    1) Can you spell the Indian place you liked eating at as well as the local street food place and other place to eat you mentioned haha.
    2) For the day we get to spend there we're planning to visit the Batu caves early in the morning, is it worth it here?
    3) We're trying to fit in, exactly in this order: (Morning to Lunch time) Batu Caves, Petronas Towers + parks surrounding it, Central Market for the fish foot spa haha, (Afternoon to night time) Bukit Bintang at Jalan Alor - check out Little India and China Town which is near Petaling Street and Mahamariamman Temple so we'll just check those out too haha. Would you say all this is possible and/or a even good idea (lol)?
    4) We're pretty much gonna take Grab for the entirety of the trip, so are there any other places in close proximity you'd say we should visit or visit instead?
Thanks again for the video, extremely informative! Btw you look so healthy & pretty haha, imo you'd be perfect as a flight attendant aha.

+qasim hameed I visited some places where I was the only female foreigner in a Malay Muslim area. The women were wearing headscarves and covered to ankles and wrists. It would’ve been inappropriate and rude for me to show up baring my shoulders, wearing short shorts etc. People can do whatever they want, but I think it’s important to be cultural respectful and mindful when visiting certain places.

Hello! We found Uber very affordable during our visit but make sure you check to see if Uber is still operating or if it was bought out by Grab. We were travelling as a couple so didn't get to experience it as solo travellers, unfortunately, but my guess would be that it would be okay. Thanks so much for watching - have a great end to 2019 and a wonderful start to 2020. Phoebe x

I personally don't feel Malaysia is that conservative. Yes it may be a Muslim majority country but in KL itself it's so diverse and modern. There are actually more Malaysian Chinese than Malay Muslims in KL. The largest night club in South East Asia is also located in KL, Zouk Club. Casinos in Genting Highlands, lottery centres , alcohol, bars and pubs are all widely available in Malaysia especially in KL. In terms of dressing, you don't really have to 'cover' yourself. In fact many local Malaysian girls wear crop tops, tank tops and shorts in KL Thos females that wear the headscarves are probably from the northern states or Indonesians. If you're going to places like Kampung Baru or out of KL then you may want to dress more appropriately like at least short sleeves or knee length shorts. In KL it's perfectly fine to dress the way you like. People are really open and mature about it. This is why you see a lot of Arabs are moving to KL cause it's a rather modern muslim majority country.
Try to visit nearby neighbourhoods too like Bangsar or Mont Kiara. Get out of downtown KL to experience the real KL life.

I don't want to spoil this channel with religious topics but I wonder why did you ditch Islam and became an atheist? Was it because of Islam or was it because of your own Malay culture and mindset? If you feel you should reply to me, just send me a private message. No need if you don't feel to. Cheers.

    • @yadashare9014
      @yadashare9014 7 ปีที่แล้ว +15

@Akmal Ahmed Ah I see, I thought you became an atheist because of science, but instead it was because of how the Malay's version of Islam relegated to just cultural norms under the current secular government. I am a Muslim and I have also studied the history that you mentioned, science and also have discussed many issues with many Atheists about Islam, hence the reason I asked you. Nevertheless it is inappropriate to hijack this thread to discuss about theology. You may suggest other forum if you're interested to discuss about Islam. For your information, I believe Islam is the truth, and surely I can provide points to support my arguments. As for Malaysia and Islam, if you wanna do a comparison about the real Islam instead of what is propagated by your government, you can take a look at how Sheikh Hussein Yee (an internationally renown Malaysian Chinese Muslim preacher) does the dakwah. I guess that's about it. Cheers.

If the way your wearing cloth is how you claim one country is conservative or not, you may want o pay a visit to Changkat Bukit Bintang or Jalan P. Ramlee and then come back here again and share whether you still agree with Malaysia is a conservative country.

Just saying the word togs Only people in queensland use that word I know this because when I go to other parts of australia they have no idea what i was talking about another word that only Queenslanders use is popper. • @travelforphoebe

Hmmm, I can't speak to everywhere in Malaysia but I can say I felt safe in Kuala Lumpur. As with any destination, you need to be a smart traveller and take the usual precautions (keep your valuables secure, don't walk down dark streets alone at night etc). I have been to places like Johor Bahru with my family and would probably recommend you take extra caution there.
