    It's used at my work, so needed a clear understanding. Interesting to know that this was the first ever attempt of Name resolution concept. Thanks Steve Cope.

    Thanks Mr. Steve,i activated a software using a key method and instructions that asked me to put some address in a host file. It did not explain how. 2:39 i didn't know that. in fact i entered my address using # so that is why the software wasn't properly registered earlier.

      Sorry the hash comments out the line and is more or less standard but I should have pointed it out as some people like yourself have never seen these type of files before. I assume you have it working?

      @@stevecope thank you so much four feedback, I think I got the 'host file' part right but still messing up somewhere as the intended setup which I want to crack is not activated yet. Anyways I don't want want to promote piracy here 🙂, but I must mention your "computing explained" channel on TH-cam is amongst my favourites as a tech enthusiast. Your videos are to the point and very informative. 👍please consider starting a tech products review or unbox channel too. I am sure you can do that perfectly.

      it should work for all software on the machine. The selection order can be changed. On windows it changes depending on the app and on linux t can be changed in a file see www.oreilly.com/library/view/linux-network-administrators/1565924002/ch06.html
      and support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/microsoft-tcp-ip-host-name-resolution-order-dae00cc9-7e9c-c0cc-8360-477b99cb978a

    Hi Steve, there are companies that still uses host file and they also have DNS. Is that because of how a client NATTing is setup? Thanks!

    • @stevecope
      @stevecope  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      not sure unless they use hosts for some local resolution or it just may be that it was used and they moved to DNS and didn't clear the hosts files.

    Isn't this strange that ping uses the hosts file but the nslookup doesn't.

    Why we use # in host file?

    • @stevecope
      @stevecope  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      it is a comment and used to disable a line in the file. This is very common in unix files
