  • Hello TH-camrs! We finally get to race at British Rowing trials again for the February edition. 5000m as fast as we can on the water. Aim of the game, row well for as much as possible and see how that compares to the other athletes. I’d say I did a decent job of that vs other years!

    Cam, don’t be too harsh on yourself. Your technique is improving and you’re up against guys who have been sculling since they were 13. You’re going through a “J” curve. It’ll take time for your new / improved technique to deliver better performance. Take comfort for being just 10 seconds off 10th place. Be patient and keep the faith.

    Cam, I have been following you for a few years now and I can easily say that this was your best technique I have ever seen you have. Well done! It’s a journey for sure and we all appreciate you taking us on it with you and Yam!

    Hi Cam, I love your videos, and they are really fun to watch. I know that you are way faster than I am, and are significantly more experienced, but I just wanted to say that my coach tells me that when I am in small boats like a single it helps a lot to swing, and not really front load the stroke, and I have noticed that it really helps my splits. From what I can see from your rowing, it almost looks like you are rowing it like an 8, so maybe trying to swing harder would help. I really look up to you, and thank you for making your videos. I love watching you improve, and keep up the great work.

    Thanks Cameron for these videos, great insights into the search for speed.
    For me, you're nearly there, You've got the resilience, the strength, the fitness, you've got a confident sculling platform. You just need to tweak your power delivery.
    Keep at it, it'll happen

    When I saw the live results last weekend I felt your pain but great to hear you taking the positives with all the recent changes and fine tuning on technique which was noted by many. One area not considered is you’re up against some guys who have been sculling from a very young age at school onwards so the positive changes you are making is already ingrained a lot of the opposition. Also, local knowledge of that stretch of water in flood conditions would make times hard to compare. Looking forward to the next steps and focusing on the world indoors.
    Keep positive 😎

    Good luck with the indoors. You have improved your technique so it probably needs a bit of time to bed in. The margins are so fine you are not far off the pace. I always appreciate your openness. Of course you are disappointed but that’s what will make you try harder next time. Go Cam!

    Have you considered a training camp at Skibberreen Rowing Club, home of the O Donovan/McCarthy Olympic Champions in the lightweight double? They know how to scull fast. Best of luck for the rest of the season!

    Any tips on leg drive? Really struggling to do it on the erg and in boats, feel like it's because I can't hold the rocked over position coming up the slide to the catch and the first part of the stroke before the hip swing and this is due to having tight hips. Always told I'm taking the catch with my arms and shoulders and not my legs and I really need advice if anyone has any!

    • @CameronBuchan

      Hamstrings - work on keeping them well stretched. Drop in catch, light as a feather before locking on and leg drive

    so...even those that ( potentially ) end up in the 8x have to complete a 1x trial and finish in a certain position ? and if you don't...then you don't progress any further ?

    • @CameronBuchan
      @CameronBuchan  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Trials are in a single for those looking to trial for sculling boats and pairs for those looking at sweep boats. But if the result isn’t good enough, yes no progression

  • @christianlindig9016

    Rowing on the erg at high rate as a big guy and 1x are quite different. You are in the middle of changing your 1x stroke. Could the indoor competition be detrimental to your 1x work?

    • @CameronBuchan
      @CameronBuchan  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      No I don’t see how one event would hinder anything, especially like I said I’d be on the erg anyway. Plus the erg doesn’t have to be different to the water

    • @christianlindig9016
      @christianlindig9016 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      On a C2 you need to turn your weight around at the front. In the boat you don’t. That’s the difference I see and I think it’s most relevant at higher rate and for big rowers as it can condition to push too hard or early. Anyway, will continue to follow your journey and sending fast splits for that.

    • @CameronBuchan
      @CameronBuchan  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Thank you! I agree they are literally different but ergs don’t have to be a hindrance to what I’m trying to do on the water.
