LAURYN HILL AIN'T THE GOAT

  • The cultural force with those heavenly octaves who crafted timeless music that spoke to men and women worldwide left us over 20 years ago, replaced by a reclusive enigma who occasionally pops up to deliver more questions than quality. And as uncomfortable as it is to say, as much as I wish it was different, I’m not saying Lauryn Hill wasn’t the greatest female emcee ever. But I can’t say she is the greatest.

That isn't because of your content, it's because people don't know where you went. It took me like 3 months before I found you again lmao I thought you quit

    For the record. I saw Nas and LH live a few months ago in Vancouver. and she did absolutely AMAZING. I knew before I went about her shitty show performances. so I didnt expect much. but damn she blew the roof of the place. The encore when Nas and LH came back out after 20 minutes of chanting was insane. For me; I just started listening to LH a few years ago and when i was off the hype of The Score, I discovered The MEOLH, then when I was done hypin about that classic album She came to my city. and blew me away One amazing thing after another for me. and her legacy still stands. GOAT

    Missy Elliot is underrated when talking about female rappers. She's probably one of out a handful who didn't get big based off of her looks, and made some pretty big songs in her time.
    She didn't have crazy bars, but bought a different image into the female rap game. That you didn't have to be pretty in the face or show some cleavage, as long as you make some good music.

    • @WhatWeDigtoday
      @WhatWeDigtoday 6 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      I'm speaking all hip hop, genderless. In the realm of men and women. People with consistent bodies of work spanning years. The Jay-z, outkasts, Kendricks, drakes, missy. If you are speaking just females, she is a legend, but folks like MC Lyte, salt n pepa, tlc had longer runs and were just as influential. If an artist makes one masterpiece, does it make them better than artists that make many exceptional albums?

    • @FlyyScience
      @FlyyScience 6 ปีที่แล้ว +33

      none of the ladies you mentioned produced a full body of work that have the impact of miseducation (plus salt n pepa and tlc are groups). There are different goats, and if we're talking about solo women rap artists, it's hands down Lauryn

    • @WhatWeDigtoday
      @WhatWeDigtoday 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Flyy Science I think we are.having a miscommunication about miseducation. In the realm of females she is in the convo, but GOAT to me should be genderless, raceless, but that's just my opinion. Regardless, she is a legend.

    Great video Justin. Lauryn definitely ran everybody else's pockets on The Score, miseducation is undeniable but you make a very very good case for her failings. S/o to Rapsody though, she's an up and coming female MC and she is crushing it. Her grammy nod was a bit of a shock but it was not undeserved and it is the pretense for very exciting things in the future.

      She's in the convo. In her prime, she was an excellent rapper and singer with a blockbuster movie. All her works are still revered today and despite her bad reputation, people still flock to see her. No other female artists that have made it big are in her lane. She was always beautiful but wasn't relying on selling sex; the talent carried her.

      Of course I haven't watched the whole thing yet, still in the process of doing that, but I skimmed through the video (maybe not desirable but wanted to start a discussion early in the comments!) With further knowledge of the video, I'd also like to say that though Lauryn sometimes does not deliver at live shows, doesn't show, is on drugs or in some altered state, when she delivers she delivers. This isn't an egregious video at all, but I disagree with the thesis I guess.

That album, that group (and especially Lauryn), are near and special to my heart. Still, this was an interesting video that made some good points.
    Side Note: Lauryn's MTV Unplugged album is legendary in its own rite. She might have played the same 3 chords, but I have never seen anyone give their all in an Unplugged performance the way that woman did on that stage. And if Kanye felt it good enough to sample a song from that album and create his own classic , then it's legendary as far as I'm concerned.

      Chief KolAss Thank you man. It was definitely a commercial flop not because it was bad, but because it failed to appeal to the mind of the basic bitch. People still don't understand that the point of the album was that it was NOT supposed to have mass appeal. the subject matter tackled in that album was some real shit and Lauryn was genuine with it. She was basically pouring out her heart. I think since its release it has been the "popular" thing to trash the album, and that's why to this day it has never gotten its just due.

      Unplugged has some of the best bars I’ve heard come out of any emcees mouth period. People that got caught up in the simplicity of the guitar playing clearly missed out on the lyricism that held it all together.

      Unplugged was awesome if you just listen to it, and stop judging it. It is indeed a classic. Not to many contemporary albums out of that ilk. It's music stripped down to the bare soul and she did an amazing job...The rest of y'all can kick rocks.

    Man i saw Lauryn Hill play in 2014 at Electric Forest Festival. She played two sets, the first being a solo set consisting of her catalog. While the music was a lot more instumentally focused then simply having a DJ on stage, with a full band playing her songs with a funk/jam band style of performance. It was awesome, i personally loved the rock oriented sound she went with. Then later that night, she performed a set with jam band String Cheese Incident, which was quite possibly the best concert ive ever seen. They did reggae covers, rock covers, as well as jam-based covers of her own catalog. It was unbelievable. Best show ive ever seen, and I saw Prince. She definitely still has it in her to perform top notch, i just think her own personal demons prevent her from doing so regularly.

    Good video as always! I don't agree with your point about other female MCs selling sex to make it big however. Nor do I agree with the implied dichotomy between a woman being conscious and being sexual. Women were merely much else but props in hip hop before the likes of Lil Kim and Foxy Brown. They pushed boundaries by rapping about their sexualities from their own perspectives and they spit things on wax which women really weren't "allowed" to say in public without being branded hoes (which is still somewhat the case today). Sounds pretty conscious to me. Meanwhile Lauryn Hill bought in to the more traditional role assigned to women, used "slut shaming" and so on - no disrespect.

    I couldn't agree more Justin. I like to think that the GOAT will never truly exist as long as Hip-Hop always exists. To name a GOAT is not fair to the possible future artists who may blow us away more than the Kendricks, the Eminems, Biggies, and Tupacs of today. I choose to call them the GOTE. Greatest.of.That.Era. which Lauryn Hill truly was.

    Great piece... It's unfortunate there hasn't been another mainstream, successful female emcee that has matched Lauren's lyrical abilities ... However, I would have to vote for Bahamadia... No real commercial success but lyrically, untouchable and I never heard of her having a ghost writer like MC Lyte or Queen Latifah... Though I luv those females, too... More people need to look into Bahamadia and recognize her greatness as an emcee...IJS!!!

      Len Walker I agree, she is on the rise but she's not there yet... Even with her Grammy nom... I really hope in the near future we see a female emcee lead the charge for rap, especially one that can keep her clothes on and actually sell her vernacular, like the majority of the men...I'm definitely rooting for Rapsody, tho... I just have an old soul and I grew up in Philly, so I'm still partial to Bahamadia... plus, she's still putting out music and lyrically she's still 🔥🔥🔥...

Lauren Hill is in my top 5 despite what happened after “miss education.” To date no female rapper comes close... well... 3 the hard way and and ladybug are definitely in the running, but how many albums can you slap from front to back without skipping a track. Lauren Hill is and always will be a goat. To date nothing comes close to “the score,” and “miss education” the 90’s would have sucked without her.

However, now I am a massive hip hop fan- I love rap & I love that this genre has people like you explaining what it’s been through the times, I love how you break things down like a modern hip hop historian. Because of this all others can rise higher...busting through the way Lauryn did left all questions answered - straight finesse! Whoever you name I welcome enter to Goatdom. Please pay your respect to Mother Hill she took the bullet so we could advance forward my Sister and we broke her spirit. Retirement is not just a game for others. Forty years later and up and coming came G.O.A.T.S. and my Sister is still on the circuit we should be shame because the magnitude of gift to us demand that we care for her and her children. There should be no women, hip hop or music bar none that we don't have a table on high where we honor our warriors. A.J THE KID RAPPER her discography is way too short. 2 fugee album and 1 solo album isn't enough imo. Difference between them and Outkast, is that outakst has a big discography and is a duo while Fugees is a trio. Lauryn Hill is still amazing tho, she can sing like an rnb singer and spit bars. Talent wise she had potential to be goat, wish she dropped more work.

    Is Jaz-Z the GOAT?

    Incredible and much needed breakdown on Lauryn Hill. For a long time, I was waiting on her follow up just like a Jay Electronica or Detox. But in the end, you broke it down completely as to why she isn't the greatest anymore. We'll just have to play The Score and Miseducation. I'm only in my 20's but I'm starting to realize that the legacy artists I always enjoy rarely drop music big enough for the culture any more. I mean we're talking Lauryn Hill, Dr. Dre, Jay Electronica, and many more that have the talent to shift things in the music industry at large but almost refuse to do so. Sure we have Jay Z and Ye still going strong and newer artists like Kendrick and Cole along with many mainstay artists but it still feels like the music quality has been drastically sacrificed in quality when you compare music from today to the bar set between 1986-2006 for hip hop.

    Wheres that Big Pun and Big L GOAT episode?

    • @freezepeach74

      Big L really didn’t have the reach or the album that planted him as potentially the GOAT.

      Freezepeach His bars are vicious. Get rappers hearts pumping like Reebok’s, every year I gain clout and my name sprouts. I’m not sure he ever would’ve earned his way into that upper echelon that carved its name into the granite but damn.... he sure sounded like he could’ve before he got gunned down.

      Damian Torres We should really stop considering rappers with less than 2 solid, bonafide albums in the GOAT conversation. We are just diminishing the value of it. Granted there will ever be an outright GOAT because not everyone is everyone's cup of tea. I'm a Harlem dude and I actually was on my L throwback last week bumping his entire catalog all week long. He murdered Jay Z before "Eminem murdered you on your own shi". He was a beast as was Mr. Rios aka Pun. Why is saying J Cole is the GOAT right now would be laughable in a lot of circles? He's got two solid albums, but he's right now have "4 your eyez only" which critics bashed heavily. So that sees his GOAT stock took a plunge. Jude be saying about BIG's GOAT status, "he didn't have enough time to be wack". Meaning he wasn't around long enough to give us the project critics didn't like. Pun definitely would've had the mass appeal no doubt because his star was starting to shine and his personality was magnetic. He also had the lyrical prowess to keep the bars folks like myself satisfied and be in corporate America's living room. Big L would've been a challenge to clean up and suit and tie up, but he sure would've been eating MCs food and be the rapper other rappers know they don't want it with like Tariq Trotter from The Legendary Roots Crew. It's a shame we never got to witness what they might have become, but I wouldn't call them GOATs. Great piece Justin.

    Like the video as always.. female rappers are always overlooked in the industry. I used to like Nicki Minaj in her old days, but once she went into more pop, i didnt feel the same.
    But, Thank God we have Rapsody who's been killing it since her feature on TPAB and got Grammy nods by herself, and then, still have Snow Tha Product also. Hope Tink will make a good up and coming also, alongside with Princess Nokia and Lady Leshurr. I also still wait for Missy's comeback.

      ariiis2 I would have a strong argument that Ghost is too and if not ghost the RZA...I know the world would pick ghost over him but I would role with the underdog...to me they are one and two..Ghost got him on style..but the RZA is a fuckin genius..WuTang

    • @lulu-7j
      @lulu-7j 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Chief KolAss I would agree but as a producer. RZA had a four to five year run where he produced classics with the 36 chambers, the Wu solo albums, & the forever joint & they all sounded different but still had that Wu sound.

    I love GOAT pieces, they seem to ask the most questions, really gets you thinkin. I'd love to seen one done on the one and only Lupe Fiasco as there's lots of debate there with him sayin he wouldn'd dumb down his music on The Cool, but then dumbs down his music immediately after. He's got at least two classics with Food & Liquor and The Cool and I'd even argue that Tetsuo & Youth is a classic as well. Would love to see what you think.

    When I have convos about who the goat is live performance is rarely talked about, so my question what does performances or personal issues have to do with the music? Ur considered to be goat becuz of ur musical talent not what u have going on in ur personal life. Rappers have felonies and all other types of ish going on yet we don't hold that against them in goat discussions. Regardless of ur personal life to me she's still greatest female emcee and in the discussion for all time

    • @TheCompanyMan
      @TheCompanyMan  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      1. Live shows is part of musical talent. 2. If you have a 50/50 catalog, there's not much left to go on. Everything else is obvious. The Score and Miseducation are classic. No one knows Blunted on Reality. Unplugged is highly criticized. It's more interesting to me to explore the whys and what happened in cases like these. You don't need me to tell you miseducation is an R&B album and the score is amazing. But the catalog itself, is still 50/50.

    Excellent piece my man. I could see it hurt you to do this one :D
    As it hurt me to see her live in Spain Rototom sunsplash reggae festival (2013 or 14, its blurry, just want to forget it). It was SHOCKING how off she was in live performance. Contrast that to a childhood to adulthood time frame where I saw her as the personification of the perfect artist more or less.

    Yo! I always love these joints. I feel like #thecompanyman like so many others are kinda poking at the queen's bed trying get her to wake up. We all feel like we lost a great artist, but this time that artist hasn't died. Probably another testament to just how great she was. One love to Justin. Keep doing your thing and one love to the crew that makes it all happen.

      cortez smith He changed the themes of hip hop with Graduation and changed the sounds of hip hop with 808s and Heartbreaks. I can't think of anyone else, other than Dre, who can claim that, and Kanye is much more consistent with albums (consistent as in how often). He also put out CD, LR, and MBDTF, which were all classics.

    It's safe to call Lauryn a G.O.A.T, longevity is not always what makes a person the greatest, it's their unmatched contribution to the cultures and how innovative the person was for the time of their incarnation. Your retort to Lauryn is like saying Edison invented the light bulb, but did he continue to innovate and make more inventions? I believe he made have, but my point is we are still using the light bulb, and the positive bar Lauryn set for black women is still needed today, and miseducation still inspires. These vlogs too often focus on quantity as opposed to the quality, and the fact that sometimes one album changes everything in music history, few artist are innovative and prolific while holding mainstream public interest all at once, that's what makes a Prince a rarity, in Hip Hop it's even more rare that a person does all three, innovation, longevity & continual mainstream success.
    I also feel this is too often done to black artist, those artist give us an evolutionary leap, then when they show vunerability or run into life problems that most humans will surely encounter, it is then suggested that they are broken vessels, not strong, wrItten off and many times soon forgotten.
    I understand the point about live shows and being late, all of that is unfortunate, but as far as hip hop history she is still one of the greatest female emcees hands down, it is what it is.

    Great video. Lauryn Hill is the greatest of all time in my opinion. Even with the very small discography. Her lyrics are witty with a lot of depth, her delivery and vocal range are unmatched in the Hip/Hop genre. One of the few, if only female Hip/hop artist that inspires and has had a profound everlasting effect on me.
