How can you look at that tank and not instantly wonder how the fuck those things don't get tangled up? How does even one jellyfish stay untangled at all, let alone a group like that?
I looked it up and found out that their tentacles are really slippery so even if they do get tangled up, they untangle easily.Think of it like spaghetti. Plus, their stinging cells don't fire up when in contact with another one of their species. (From : r/explainlikeimfive)
+M Wang Not to get too picky, but a flock of ravens is called a "misfortune". Or sometimes a "constable" or a "conspiracy". Because, you know...English makes _perfect_ sense.
Joe's certainly has come a long long way from a very stiff host he used to be in the very beginning. Remember the Solar System Scale video? He was so stoic..Now he's just as agile as those *jellies*.
My sister is a science teacher, and she refers to them as sea jellies (which makes way more sense, since they aren't fish). I've been going by that term ever since. Very fun video, as per usual.
I've had to dive through a Smack of Jellyfish before - and Smack is the perfect verb/noun to use, especially if you got one wrapped around your thigh or forehead. lol
Jellyfish are so freaky...and beautiful, in a strange way. The way they're so transparently thin and drift along with no feet, no fins, no traditional motion-devices...they've always reminded me of something you might see floating along through some alien sky. They're like delicate floating grocery bags...with poison. :P
Damn so thats the secret its water with a blue back round in the tank and its hella thin i always thought it was just a blue void of water, i mean they use like lights to make the water look blue and nice but
Well, that's an interesting question. The floating critters we picture when we think of jellyfish are actually just one stage of their life cycle, the medusa stage. Those jellies will spawn, releasing their sperm cells into the water in hopes that another jelly will take them in and fertilize them. Then once they're fertilized the little larvae will settle onto a hard surface and become a polyp, like a tiny anemone. Then that anemone will start to bud into small segments, which will get bigger and bigger until they separate and pop off the polyp, and that's when the medusa jellyfish is born! Hopefully you haven't been biting your nails for the last two years waiting for that answer!
I was stung by a jellyfish when I was three... You'd think I was too young to remember but to this day I remember the moment it happened... Im still scared of going to beaches.

This dude was excited, and clearly loved his job. Good to know people like him are on the job :)
I want his job too
I know this comment is 6 years old but I 100% agree. Always great to hear someone speak with so much passion for what they do.

And yet my headphones look like they've been mangled through a black hole.
we need to know to slove the greatest problem...tangled headphones
+Tariq Samaien yes we do!

I love how everyone you're interviewing is so fun and happy when they talk. It really makes it so much more enjoyable.
Lest you forget, this guy has a PhD.
Juliane Nguy im not american, whats a Phd?
MegaMGstudios It's a Doctorate, a PhD is the highest degree for science.
Juliane Nguy thanks
Phd is not only an american concept though!!
I thought post doc was the highest degree in science. Its done after PhD right
LOL this channel is amazing, really loving the host and every episode is very interesting and entertaining.
Thank you PBS!
Watching that guy talk about all the times he’s been stung sounds like the origin story of a comic super-villain.
XD Joe, you make me laugh. Nice dancing.
There is a thin semantic line separating weird and beautiful. And that line is covered in jellyfish. -THE WHISPERING FOREST
I can't wait to go swimming into those tanks *-*
+NovaPrince more than once.
Moon jellies sting, but there stings are not potent and you can feel them. So i would be happy to swim with them
They're deadly, but so beautiful. I'd love to go to an exhibit and photograph them.
Why is my FIRST response “I wanna touch it”
Your oceans episodes are awesome! Thank you for doing this :D

the height difference between joe and the jellyfish dude😭 i love this guy he was so fun
Did an internship at the aquarium. They took us on a tour and I got to touch the moon jellies in that jelly lab.
This was pretty neat, but I was wondering. How are they born?

MoonJellyfish.com sweet thanks
Not only nails ,He lost fingers too
One reason why he hasn't typed the the 'thank you' message yet
MoonJellyfish.com haven’t we actually found that some jellyfish can repeatedly revert to polyp stage, thereby making them essentially immortal?
Eggs
I was expecting them to talk about the box jelly.
I wasn't expecting cannibal jellyfish. The more ya know.
This video was very strange, but very cool! You should do more strange videos
Acid and jellyfish.. what could be better!?
My body is ready
Even though jellyfish look other worldly they are our fellow earthlings.🌎
these jellyfishes are so cool !!
I was stung by a jellyfish when I was three... You'd think I was too young to remember but to this day I remember the moment it happened... Im still scared of going to beaches.
They are really the oddest creatures

IOTBS: I don’t think you’re ready for these jellies
My incompetent self: *proceeds to watch
Joe tripping on jellies is great.
Happy ocean day!
i kinda expected him to say at the end "what are those?!?"
I-I don't think you start tripping on LSD when you look at jellyfish
You don't, but this weed is pretty damn good tonight.
3:38 how it feels to chew five gum
A group of squids should be called a SQUAD.
So... To pee or not to pee? That is the question.
No.Use sea water and don't use fresh water or pee.
Don't the composition of the urine make it worse
Wow the jellyfish it was awsome

Lucky for you that is a possibility you can get jellies there is site called jellyfish art . Org
So stupid
Someone should make an hour long version of Joe's jelly dance
OMG Joe, no. This is no time for LSD trips.
A few weeks ago, my local town river was FLOODED with tiny jellyfish. I caught a few of them in an empty coffee cup. it was crazy.
I m so JELLY for the power of these JELLIES
In addition to being called a smack, they can also be called a swarm or a bloom.
They actually produce secret new "stuff" from jellyfish powder there. You can sniff it ;)
"I don't think you're ready for Jellies" I think I am...
OH SHIT I WAS WRONG!
HELP! AHHH!
Man this guy is awesome. I will forever watch your videos sir.
Some of the jellyfish are almost like physical minds that haven't evolved fully yet, very odd
I have so much fun watching your vids!
That guy seems really nice. I would like to have a conversation with him lol
Jellyfish are my all time favorites.
jelly fish guy really working there for long time ,hasn't he?
Jellyfishes are my favorite animal if u ask why my only answer is because “some are deadly and that’s cool...” I WHAT A PET JELLYFISH I WANT THIS JOB!
The fact that he doesn't mind being a goofball and he has a PHD makes me feel better about my chances of getting mine
Well, getting a degree doesnt guarantee you a job. Most likely hes one of the few whom has the luxury of being himself.
Thank you for making me smile!
The fact that Jellyfish have survived for 650 million years
despite not having brains gives hope to many people 😂
Who else was a bit slow when peanut butter fish came up? For a few seconds i was thinking oh i have look for them, then got the joke... 😅
Trippin' on jellies, Joe; trippin' on jellies.
I wish they would have talked about the Immortal Jellyfish.
