    Something that helps with our 6 kids who want screen time is that if they finish their jobs before 8 PM, they can have 20 minutes of screen time before bed. If they finish before dinner, they can have 40 minutes. If they finish before lunch, they get a full hour. This really motivates them to get those jobs done early instead of dragging it out all day. When they want more screen time, they have to do another job first.

      it is a great idea, but the bad part is that screen time right before bed is really bed for the kids proper sleep...maybe do it earlier?

      @marta6755 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@referrer13 If it is just 20 min I don't think it is going to be a big deal. And also, they would probably want to get more screen time so they will do it earlier. :)

      @@marta6755 I think it is bad anyways...all studies show any screen time should end at least one hour before bed....
      I just think the least my kids have of screen in their lives hte better it will be for them. But each family has its own way :)

    I just graduated German high school and I use a similar clipboard. I found myself sleeping half the day and spending the rest of my time on my phone. I didn't get anything done and wasn't productive at all. I wanted to make sure that I at least get a couple of things done every day and it works great!
    My tasks are: Bathroom (as I am very inconsitent with things like putting on cream and sunscreen), 10 minute speedclean, 1 area of my room gets a deep clean OR I wash my windows OR I vacuum clean, I plan my day, I add things to my to do list, I get (at least) 3 things of my to do list done, and I do at least one thing that you'd consider a chore for my family. That's in addition to my usual responsibilities. It probably doesn't sound that much but it's a big improvement for me.
    Greetings from Germany :) -Anja

      You get 1 million 👍 just for even taking the initiative to improve. I really struggle with my almost 17 yr old to do anything!!! I try to enforce it but all we get is fighting, so I just let it go. I tell her she will have a rude awakening once she goes to college and has no life skills for lack of investing in herself. i dont have kids, but if i ever did, i would be raising them like this! too many kids arent taught responsibility early enough for it to take hold and manage their future lives. thank you for raising good kids with good values so that we can have some form of hope in this world full of entitled little brats who love handouts and cry when they dont get their way.

    Giving chores when kids say they're bored is the best way to stop the whining. Hilarious story about this, on Father's Day my husband wouldn't decide what he wanted to do, and came to us all saying, "I'm Bored" My 16 year old threw out, There's chores to do, you can weed the garden. AHHHHHHHHHHH! It was hilarious!

    We used to do chore zones until all I heard was "that's not my zone" when something needed to be cleaned in a hurry. So we did away with zones and have said "no one gets electronics until the zones are done. I don't care who does what just get it done." Then we ran into "he didn't do anything" so we handled that by saying that we would ask them who did what and if we felt it wasn't evenly split, their electronic time was gone the entire next day. I can say that for the first time ever, my house is clean and I don't hear as much of the arguing. I definitely use the clipboards for what I call the 1-2-3s. Ones are their daily typical items... brush your teeth/hair, make your bed, pick up your laundry, etc. Twos are math, reading, and outdoor play. Threes are chores. They always have to do the ones, but sometimes I will let them get by without the twos or the threes.

    I started doing your laundry system. Its is awesome. I have tweaked it a bit to fit us and I love it! I just sort each day until loads are full or enough for a small load. Some days i do 3 loads and some i do none. I have 4 kids but dont get a ton of laundry to wash everything every day. I always have dirty laundry sorted and for the first time its ok. Im not stressed by it anymore. You got me to start cooking for my freezer as well. The kids LOVE their Mini pizzas! This week i made pizza and taco pockets to try out. This video is perfect for me at the moment. Im trying to give the kids more responsibility and get them helping helping around their home more. LOVE your ideas! Thanks for all you so kindly share.

    THANK YOU JORDAN!!! I really cannot thank you enough. I'm on day two of this system and it's already turned around our household. Today our kids (ages 4 and 6) earned their screen time, and instead of running for their devices they continued singing and dancing and giggling together for another hour. They are so proud of helping out around the house and motivated to finish their reading, writing and math practice (which we've built into their daily to-dos). And when they aren't working their way through to-dos, they're forced to be more creative and play collaboratively when they can't bury their heads in a tablet or iPhone. We really, really needed this (we are on day 82 of home quarantine). I so appreciate your sharing this and the printables - which we now have taped to our kitchen wall!

    we do charts, chores, and allowances, too! we do not, however, tie them together. money doesn’t motivate my children, which is just an extra reason why we don’t tie them together. charts are to get on track for am and pm. chores are bc ... we are a family and chores have to be done! allowances is strictly to learn about spending, giving, and saving money bc that is a huge life long lesson on its own. we also save for their future in an account that they don’t know/realize. we love our bucket list-we put events in my phone calendar though so we have a semi-dedicated day for things. here in chicago, we have a ton of free or cheap stuff to do with kids (ever ride an el train to the end? no, but the kids love it for $2.50 each). we explore with the cta, the bikes, and scooters. sometimes finding a new playground is exciting enough! have a great summer!

    • @karasmidt2813
      @karasmidt2813 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Do your kids have things they are responsible to pay for? My older 2 kids(age 5 and 7) become more motivated and have learned to save when they have things they need to pay for, such as summer toys, a basket for their bike, treats at the store, or anything they ask for at the store. If they ask for anything, we ask how much they have in their family bank account and we help them do the math to see if they have enough. They also wanted a pet hamster, so they had to pay for the hamster and all of the supplies. If they didn't earn money, they would lose out on a lot of the fun 'wants' that they ask for. The money they get is there gateway to the extra fun stuff that aren't needs. If your kids are teenagers, find something of value and put them in charge of saving for it (outings, school clothes, gas money, cell phone etc).

    OMG thank you so much for this video. I can't tell you how relieved I am to have my children learn responsibility with chores and payable rewards... and to be honest, I'm most relieved to have someone other than myself to clean around the house. Knowing that something is being put away or wiped down on a daily biases has been a gigantic relief. I've also adopted your snack method... and let me tell you GENIUS idea. Not only are they making their own chooses, that my husband and I don't have to think about, but it has saved us money on snacks. Before, I noticed that they were wasting food by leaving wrappers open and half eaten or they wouldn't agree with what we chose for them. Now I have divided the snacks into healthy and unhealthy binds :) AND I've taken the snacks out of their original packaging and put them in portion ready zip lock bags. For the first time, we have a surplus of snacks waiting to be divided and used. THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH! I'm wondering how you readjust the chores to fit their school schedule... I KNOW you have a video on that. I'll look for it. Thanks again and I'll be forever singing your praises!

      I find, that for myself, when we are doing a zone together as a family I have to be the delegator/facilitator and not get involved in the actual cleaning or the kids get distracted and are not sure what to do next. Maybe if I was more consistent with our family cleaning time then the kids would learn to see for themselves what needs to be done and I could be more help but for now me facilitating seems to work best.

    Love this! I have a 4 year old son and this is his first "summer vacation" from school. I'm trying to wrack my brain around what to do to keep him entertained but you made a good point that I shouldn't have too. He's got lots of toys to play with, arts and crafts and he does have a tablet that I try to keep him off of most of the day. So I'm really going to try to implement a clipboard setting for him. Thanks so much!

    I do the, "must do before screen time" too. And it works great. However I'm terribly at trying to keep my 4 year entertained. I love that you said it's not our job to keep our kids entertained. I always feel guilty if we don't do something daily, big or small (the park, a hike, an amusement park, swimming, etc). I really like the huge bucket list.

    Love this! so great to see intentional parenting at work. obviously not everyone has the privilege to be able to stay home and really focus on this system 100%. but you can adopt the concepts and incorporate the system to an extent to teach kids responsibility and accountability! Amazing.

    A year later...watching this for first time and LOVE All your amazing ideas Jordan👏🏻. I’m heading to set up some new chore charts now. I homeschool my 6 kiddos all winter but we enjoy summers off and I always tell them that we aren’t hanging out with friends UNTIL chores are done! I’d like more incentives like you have here so it’s not just a play date they are motivated for:) Thank you tons sweet mama💛 ~Shannon

    Great video I used to get my kids to be helpful when they were smaller and then things just got overwhelmed with school and work and I slacked off and now I have teenagers that I need to get motivated and take responsibility for doing stuff around the house. Great video

    I swear your videos have been a SAVIOR for me! We recently started the clipboards and they have worked out amazing ! Even with my daughter who is HIGHLY HIGHLY energetic ! Not only does it help them feel proud and accomplished it also helps me out and takes a lot of the house work of my to do list ! It’s my second year homeschooling my kids as well and I will have to admit that last year was total chaos! Lol! And I do have to personally thank this page for helping me declutter my mom brain 😂😂😂😍
