For some reason I have only just discovered you guys and I am a major TH-cam watcher. I love you guys already, there's just something so refreshing about you and the humour is ON POINT! 😂😂
I used to fly a Bell 206L3 out of Downtown all the time. One interesting/challenging issue occurs when you have a full load of passengers and the winds are from the northwest. The heliport departure paths are basically all in a easterly direction. The buildings cause that NW wind to become turbulent and it can be very difficult to depart safely with this tailwind. You should do a power check in a hover, watch out for the tail (it can be squirlly) and don't be surprised if you can't get the benefit from effective translational lift. It can be a real "gotcha" unless you are prepared for it.
I noticed that you landed at West 30th. St Heliport. One of the most delightfully (wild looking) things to do is to take off from the barge (tied up at the north end of the heliport) and fly your machine over to the fuel deck at the south end. It's a very short over water hop but it's so much fun! It's like taking yer horse for a wild jump and slinging yerself across the water, right down onto the deck while swinging the tail around, getting her level and setting her down right quick and soft. I swear it makes a pilot feel like a cowboy. I used to do it all the time but never got any video of it (darn it all!).
I enjoy your videos so much. The helicopter is not always the singular focus, but the vehicle that enables other adventures and I think that's important. This channel has great crossover from youtube/vlogging to aviation and I'm sure will get many young kinds inspired to pursue their PPL!!!
@17ll3 x214 if you actually read the article that you went out of your way to post, you would have realized you were wrong to correct him. Many people say, “An historical occasion,” but “an historical” isn’t used regularly in American English. Using “an” is common, but not universally accepted by experts. Here’s how to figure out which article to use: Before a word starting with a pronounced, breathy “h,” use “a.” Examples: A hotel; A happy time; A historical day; A healthy, happy baby. You attend a history class, not an history class. Same with “historical.” It was a historical occasion. Honeymooners go to a hideaway, not an hideaway. The donkey carried a heavy burden, not an heavy burden. “Historical” is no different. Use “an” with words beginning with an unpronounced “h.” Examples: An herb garden; an hour; an honor; An heir. Now, let’s combine them: “Look! An herb garden in a historical setting. Let’s stay an hour, then find a hotel.” In the UK and other countries with British influence, the “h” in “herb” is usually pronounced. See what I mean about confusing? We’ll almost always find exceptions to every rule. No matter. Just do your best to be a good communicator and move on!
I saw a live feed of a helicopter that dumped into the river get lifted out in that same spot a few weeks ago. Wonder what they cost per hour in the water tied up?
Make sure that it’s a manual inflating life vest. If it inflates in the aircraft(much like a boat) it will pin you to the floor/ ceiling and you won’t be able to get out.
I work at Kearny Heliport (65NJ), you should check it out here, I believe landing fees are $60 for light aircraft. If you have a 44 or a 22 we do not have fuel here for it, but if it's a 66 we do.
Chris is just the nicest guy. Also kudos for Chris for filming and setting up all the cameras of his journey, love the gorillapod with camera over the seat for the forward shot. This was an epic video
chris im a 16 year old boy who has always been interested in aviation and specifically the flight of helicopters! I have within the last 2 years noticed a strobe light the rotates and it is green and yellow and I happen to wonder what that was for? I couldn't find any google results.
@@BeckiandChris haha cool, it must be a quiet distinguishable sound, my first guess was a cessna but i know nothing about aviation, so i took my next best guess 😁
Put down the camera, enjoy the time with family, thats so true. But yet you got a really fun little adventure filmed out adventure! Also, number of hours? Saw somewhere you're making a video for that, so lookin forward to hearing about that!
Great video, nice job flying into the helipad. Super fun to watch. Please tell us about your "allotment of hours" in the helicopter. Would love to know how that all adds up.
R44s have to be rebuilt after a certain number of hours. We want ours to last for the next four years so we’ve roughly allotted a certain number of hours per year to most efficiently use the machine. We could fly more, it would just time out sooner than we want.
some dude had like a seizure or something last week and apparently did this heroic crash landing trying to keep from killing anyone else and passed away during the ordeal. it was terrifying
Question: when you are buzzing around do the bug splats come from above or in front? I can't imagine they would get through the downdraft(?) of the rotating blades. Sorry if it's a dumb question 😕
They’re coming from in front, you are traveling with significant forward velocity so the bubble is encountering clean undisturbed air and the rotor vortices are trailing behind.
this is SO cool dude. As a resident of Manhattan wish I knew about ya earlier. Would have love to taken some shots of you coming down to land. Always a dream of mine to fly on a helicopter!
Interestingly we just use water and a polishing cloth (looks like heavy gauge gauze) to clean the bugs of the Firefly's canopy, if you get to them when they are fresh they come off really easily, any streaks are buffed off with a clean microfibre cloth. We do have propper canopy cleaner in our cabinet but that is generally reserved for those days when the whole aircraft needs a damn good clean. It's brilliant being able to fly down the hudson river like that, GA aren't allowed over central london (helicopters are the exception to the rule, but in designated heli-lanes and generally only for arriving and departing the heliports.
This man has nerves of steel!! Holy crap Chris!! So glad you two had an awesome vacation! As for my weekend bucket list, I want to get my girlfriend comfortable enough on the electric skateboard to take it out on the road as well as survive my first day at my new job at West Mountain. I absolutely love your vlogs!! I'm about to place an alert on your millennium falcon on FlightRadar to check everytime you guys come into NYC! I'm kidding LOL! But would love to meet both of you in the city sometime. Question for Chris. As a pilot; how do you feel about drones in general? What safety precautions do you take. We all know drones have to stay under 400 feet. I live in NYC and am a drone pilot. I've had several incidents in the harbor where choppers fly under 400 feet, especially tourist helicopters.
FYI, the landing fee at the Port Authority airports is only $25. Helicopters are not subject to the $100 peak time fee. Eight hours parking is $45. Pretty economic, all things considered.
Awesome!! What did you mean by you have flown the allotted/plannned number of hours for this year? Just a budget concern? Or an hour concern for maintenance?
Chris, in case you have a doubt with one item on the checklist (something seems broken but it isn’t or one thing look different and you don’t feel like giving it an OK), whom do you do your crosscheck with that particular item if your are alone? Any pilot around there? Tower? Technician? Just curious. Thanks and safe flights!
Pretty sure the 'after hours' fee would only apply if you were accessing the helipad, after normal operating hours. It isn't an additional overnight fee while already parked. But I've never flown in there, so I'm willing to be corrected.
Chris, with your comms, I know you're nervous with busy airspace and wanting to do the "right" thing the whole time, but give yourself a bit a break by not repeating everything verbatim. If the controller gives you a clearance (climb and maintain XXX), then repeat that verbatim for sure. And a great tip got by being bitched out from a controller once is that (this is less applicable to helos) 180, 180, and 180 can be construed very differently. So if it's a heading, say "heading, if it's an airspeed, say "knots", and if it's a flight level (ok, you won't be going there), say "flight level". The point is, there are things they want to hear and things they don't. Listen intently to the pros and you'll get the gist of what is absolutely necessary, and then stick to that with the mantra "less is more" when it comes to comms. When I'm flying now I typically will say "roger" or "wilco" for most things, unless the clarity is necessary. It frees up your brain and the radio ;)
