- This was the first year that I personally saw Beat Juggling. This year was in my opinion one of many "robberies" of the DMC. Poor Judging or having some "agenda" for certain competitors...either way it's hard to ignore that THIS competition was misjudged.
Steve Dee definitely won,Steve Dee was innovator and till this day remains one of the most underrated “turntablist” of all time.

I Begged Them 2 Re Consider and Give The Title To Steve cuz I knew Baby G wouldn't make if far in London....and I was right!

I remember seeing on video and being amazed at what Steve was doing with the funny drummer juggle alone! He was doing on turntables what guys weren't even doing on samplers at the time! I thought he didn't give what they expected, tricks and blends, but he was basically give them beats!

Baby G did body tricks and THAT seemed to APPEAR to be more than what Steve was doing....but ON THE CONTRARY it just SHOWS at that time in the DJ culture ...to the fans it was more VISUAL than creative......which only means when Steve unleashed THE FUNK.... it was SOOO over ppl's heads they COULDNT understand what he was doing at the time..but i'm just shocked that ppl didnt get it after HEARING how he rocked that JUST BUGGING cut.....THAT WAS NOT NO KIND OF NORMAL ON NO ASPECT OF DJING
Then you can’t say it was misjudged based on how things were at the time. It’s easy to go back and judge it years later with additional insight.
Baby-G's set comes off as sloppy, unorganized and unmusical. The only cool aspect of his set was the intro, flipping some of the reggae records. Steve Dee murdered his 6 minutes. Period. There's many head nodding moments in Steve's set, whereas Baby-G's is literally painful to listen to. People talk about skipping, but Baby G's set was full of skips.

My goodness it should be the other way around. DJ Baby G did his thing, it was going pretty good and he over did it. Then DJ Steve dee put on a show and kill it! You can tell that this guy practiced his skills to make sure its on point. So the judges should of put Steve Dee to won the dj competition. Straight up!

For me still just a few top dj's even in 2018... after seeing a lot of them on You Tube.... to me personally it's still Cash Money an Jazzy Jeff and despite his setback... Compton trigger Dj Alladin... when Alladin's on rampage came out in '89 I even thought for a while that he was better than Cash Money... but the years made me to make a change in my humble opinion... ow yeah DJ Miz as wel and Tat Money... I loved the Philly DJ's a lot in the mid to early 90's... Caah best DJ... but Alladin is the DJ still with my favorite record out there... since something like Low Profile was unheard of bank in 89... dope dj and dope mc on every release....
Although I like the 80's LL joints with Cutcreator a lot as wel... but that's another kind of story

Baby relied so heavily on Stage Presence , his set was mediocre at best ...
And yeah the boy had just as many "Skips" as Steve ..
I personally think Steve was so ahead of the time that people didn't quite grasp he was doing ..
Win or Lose , he became a Legend .. His Influence on the Era is undoubted ..
Plus , his Techniques are still taught to DJs this day ..!
And Baby Gs set is not even rhythmical, try to count a beat, it's almost always off. Steve was much cleaner.

NOWHERE WUZ IT MORE OBVIOUS that lame, NON-DJing Body tricks appealed 2 judges (& an ignorant audience) than the '91 Finalz where non-DJ David spun himself on the turntable (AFTER MADD MESS UPS in his set) & "won" over Q-Bert who ripped the recz 2 shreds & wuz doin' stuff that sent DJin in2 the stratosphere. Then after Q came back & won the next 2 titles DMC retired them sayin' they were 2 far advanced 4 any1 else 2 compete with! How unfair wuz THAT?!?

Baby G’s set was cringing to watch, Stevie Dee’s transforming at the end of his set won it for me.
I’ll be the first to admit that Steve should have won that battle. I agree totally w Erik William’s comments.
This was 1990 (before internet) and what Steve Dee was doing was groundbreaking! Way above peoples heads that night. Even some of the judges. It was the outlandish tricks that got me over and I presume the crowd’s response (?). The majority of the crowd were random Hip Hop fans and not necessarily discerning DJs.
I beg to differ w those that claim DMC had an “agenda” THAT night. What are you basing that theory on? One thing to keep in mind is that the term “beat juggling” hadn’t even been coined yet (nor flair scratches for that matter). Steve was ahead of his time. When I got the VHS tape and was able to rewind it over and over, it really showed how dope and technical he was. He killed it at the battle for World Supremacy that year...New Music Seminar 1990 (do ur self a favor and watch that battle if u can find it). So yes, it was misjudged. Hindsight is 20/20.

Compared to a lot of the older beat juggling sets, this is just clinical and technically so sound it's a pleasure to listen to still in the year 2020. Amazing.
There were no beat juggling sets before this 1990 battle. It was the first year Steve Dee introduced beat juggling to the world.
Steve murdered this. I see where Baby G was going. The previous year David used crazy tricks to win and it was more flash than cleanliness

Here is the thing Chris-i was at the 1989 NEW MUSIC SEMINAR battle in New York held on that hot July Sunday in the Red Zone club and Steve was there ready to compete.Steve was going to be in the battle as an alternate to Dj Miz if Miz didnt make it on time.however because they allowed Miz extra time to be late because of the 2 hour trip from Philadelphia.so in turn Steve wasnt allowed to be in it.Some of the routines u saw at the DMC were going to be used in the 1989 seminar.Steve already had the beat juggling/funk thing ready to be put on display.Fun fact:Steve was so angry that he wasnt allowed to participate in the 1989 NMS battle that during the seminar,in the crowd, he shouted "FUCK THE SEMINAR"!! lolol. I was there and I heard it sitting in the front.He was wearing his Blue "superman"shirt with red sweat pants and hightop sneakers.

Steve's juggles were so far advanced plus his transforms at the end so clean and funky as hell. Clear winner.

I can see why Steve lost now. In The New Music Seminar in NYC, everyone was beat juggling after Steve brought it in 89. When Steve brought beat juggling into DMC, probably most of the judges hadnt seen it yet nor understood it, so of course they will vote for what isnt over their heads, and in 1990 that was body tricks. The same thing happens in many competitions where recent skilled champs arent judges.
How was beat juggling new in 1990? Herc and Bambata were doing it in the 70's

Steve’s set was over the judges heads when during that time, it seemed to be focused on body tricks and gimmicks.
The same happened later on to Craze when he first competed in the ITF battles. He lost because he was too advanced according to the judges and I think this was the case with Steve Dee.

Steve Dee was robbed like Q-Bert in 1991 World Finals. Both djs were very ahead of their times. Luckily Q-Bert got revenge in 92/93-94 finals ...

He was too ahead of his time. All the breakdowns, melodies and loops that sounded like real production went way over everyone’s heads, including the judges. For the first time, someone tried to make a real produced beat live at a DJ battle.
Thanks because they repeatedly done the same thing to DJ Precision (X-Ecutioners) at the 2007, 2012 and 2015 DMC World Finals.

The Great Steve was definitely robbed
Steve was so excited about his new techniques I think he put too many different ones in the set! Of course now when we watch it it is easy to say he "should" have won. If you were there at the time you would probably have agreed with the judges decision. I think competitions are always silly - however it is a great way to drive invention. Edit: I say if "you" were there meaning the commentors...if "you" were a DJ at that time and you knew how difficult it was to do what Steve did - I can see why you would be angry!
What's silly about competitions?
In my opinion they cause a lot of arguments and really who can say someone is "better" when you are talking about artistic expression. That said I do see the value in competitions because they are a great way to motivate and inspire people to improve and invent new techniques. I prefer jamming to battling would be the simplest way to explain my thinking:)
I like your post. The most important thing is that you recognized how people felt “at that time.“ Yes, we can look back now and say whatever. But in the moment I think most people were still excited about body tricks.
I was at the 96 finals when dj swamp took first. I remember being super excited about his set. DIsk was there. I asked him who he thought won and he said sinista and then Babu. I remember being completely stunned by his response.
Looking back, I can see why he felt that way. But at the time, I was more impressed by the stuff Swamp was doing.

@@JonathanLogan1982 I feel like Swamp told a story. He had a great intro, and then a number of different types of skills were on display during his set. He also had a great outro with smashing the records, which were totally consistent with his heavy metal look.
Sinister basically just did a bunch of really-sick juggling routines.

Somebody said Cash Money was beat juggling since 86/87. Meh, while technically true there was nothing really technical about Cash Money's beat juggling style if you compared it to Steve D. Steve D didn't just transition back and forth between 2 records. He completely re-worked the beat into something brand new. Show me the Cash Money videos in 86/87 where he was doing shit like at the 7:30 and 10:00 minute marks. That doesn't mean Cash Money was a bad turntablist. To the contrary. He was definitely good, no doubt... but Steve D invented The Funk. He is the father of beat juggling. He is.

i’m not here to debate who invented be juggling; but I wanted to point out something. It’s not fair to belittle Cash’s or anyone else’s style, simply because it’s not as advanced as Steve Dee’s.
You need to keep in mind that every advancement builds on whatever comes before it. Beat juggling could not have existed without many predecessors laying down basic patterns.
Hadn't seen this video before, but personally I think Steve tree's set stands above the other dudes I also think his beat juggling is better than many modern dj sets
Overall Stevie won. To the trained eye and ear you can see this was not a fair result. Coming from an X DMC UK finalist and competitor.
Coming from someone with 20 years scratching experience who has owned technics for.. 20 years and used to practise his scratch 4-6 hours a day
Who loves DMC as it is what got me into the whole damn thing even though I can't beat juggle for shit.
Have somehow never seen this set before but I agree with you stevie was tight I really don't think the judges understood what they were hearing the same way I see people on Internet saying qberts scratching is "shit" as its too advanced. But if you scratch yourself you know it isnt...if that makes sense??

Baby G was quite sloppy with all his body tricks etc. I think MAYBE his set would have been better if he stood still to be honest. Steve D actually topped what Baby G was doing, also raised the bar for battling. So yes, this was GROSSLY misjudged. If I dare to acknowledge my own bias, I will always choose the inventive yet realistic over the fancy yet ineffective.

I agree that the judging & format of some Dmc events were questionable & clearly unfair ..It's usually more obvious or evident at the qualifying or elimination stages.
The earliest example is Chad Jackson in the 1987 world finals .The audience can be heard booing him on the audio recording which was released on vinyl .And it was reported that bottles were thrown at the stage at the announcement.
Another miscalculation occurred when DMC allowed teams to compete against individuals in the same event between 1992 - 1996. Now a DJ team with mc's samplers & keyboards etc would have a better chance of passing the qualifying stage, eliminations & potentially reach the finals at the expense of the individual all across the globe.
#Note that the top 3 world final positions were awarded to Dj teams in 1992 & 93.
A obvious high profile example of the dj team versus individual casualties would be Rob Swift , Roc Raida , DJ Rectangle, DJ Ta-Shi.
Eg..
Roc Raida & Rob Swift were competing as individuals against the Rocksteady Dj's in the 1992 Us finals.
Dj Rectangle was competing against the Rocksteady Dj's / Dream team defending in the 1993 world finals .
I would also include...
Dj Reckless beating Dj Pogo in the 1990 Uk finals.....( Dj Reckless's set was full of skips & mismatched mixing errors & too reliant on the " copycat " routine ) which fooled the audience.
Dj Reckless defending UK champ beating Dj Excel in the 1991 Uk finals. ( abusing the Copycat routine again )

I completely agree with you, and aside from the whole solos not having a chance against teams, I think crazy fast definitely should've won in the world finals of 93/4. Q's and Mix Masters has some okay parts, kinda?? I enjoyed the routine but I definitely liked crazy fast much more in that final. They had a more musical flow, while Q's and mix masters was just kinda, loud and obnoxious.
agree about the unfairness of solo djs competing against teams -- also agree about reckless at the '90 uk final - trix, pogo, jay, biznizz, and sparra all had better sets that night

This convo is so dope. “Turntabilism”, not just playing records, but actual DJ skills was born this day with Steve Dee’s routine. What Baby G was doing at the time was the height of gimmicky, cringe worthy, “DJing”. Every DMC “Battle” up to this point was about who was fastest, or what props (like soda cans) did you use, or turning turntables on different angles.This battle was the difference between “back-spinning” and beat-juggling. Damn near everyone in these comments can back-spin, but there are very few beat jugglers in these comments. Steve Dee’s creation (The Funk, as he called it) or beat juggling was him taking “playing breaks” to a whole new level. What RZA did with samples making a whole new groove/cadence/tempo is what Steve did live on turntables LOOOONG before RZA. So as Baby G was following the noisy, unrhythmic practice of going as fast as you can and putting your legs in the air, using your feet and crotch….Steve Dee took an audio we all knew, and created a new rhythm entirely. This is The DJ (again) giving birth to and evolving Hip Hop. Salute to you for your comment, and I apologize for the essay…but that’s the whole truth.

You are absolutely right, THAT is what they were used to seeing, so that's how it was judged. However, when Steve Dee performed the last time at Crotona Park he was on the phone with me before and after his performance. They didn't even feed the Legend (no cap) but he was received well by everyone in the park that day, but in my opinion not adequately. Trust I am well aware of the biased toward him in NYC, but he is without doubt the architect of Turntabilism, no matter who tries to deny that.

I wouldn’t say he was robbed. I can obviously see why people would have voted for Steve Dee; but I can also see why people would have voted for Baby G.
In terms of turntable skill and musicianship, it’s not even close: Steve Dee.
But in terms of performance and showmanship, Baby G.
Steve Dee had some sick patterns, but didn’t do them long enough for people to get into them (in my opinion, since we can’t gauge the crowd reaction).
Speaking of which, crowd response is a very important component of a competition, since the artform is, at the end of the day, about rocking the crowd.
Finally, people weren’t ready for juggling. They tend to go with what is familiar. Body tricks was the trend and Baby G executed them almost flawlessly.
My verdict: Baby G first, with Steve Dee a close second.
Steve D got robbed, period! As a side note, DJ Mizz and DJ Alladin were beat juggling a year before this. You can hear one of Mizz’s routines in Steve D’s set. Unless my timeline is off. Check out when they were on Yo MTV Raps. Steve D was a beast though!!!

I seems that there is a lot of racial hatred on this page for Texas Latino "DJ Baby G!" Yes if it was only a beat juggling competition, then Steve Dee would be the sole winner. This is not the case and DJ Red Alert and the other judges agree. Furthermore there has been more latino champions in the DMC and at the world at large.

Definitely robbed... best set I've seen from that time period and who knows... maybe all the childish body tricks would've stopped sooner than it did if he had gone through.
Why do you consider body traits to be childish? They are very popular aspect of performing. And it takes a lot of skills to execute them. Not necessarily musical skill, but body control and hand/eye coordination, etc.
@@logicalblackman8228 I'm sure they do take a lot of hand eye coordination but they've never done it for me because the rhythm and timing gets lost in the razzmatazz of the tricks. If you listened to body tricks through audio only, then it would sound awful. Some of the best sets I have seen could be listened to through audio only and still be good because the beat transitions and timing are still bang on.
@@TheMeeesterT obviously, body tricks don’t have the same effect if you don’t look at them. The whole point is that it is a visual form of entertainment.
@@logicalblackman8228 body tricks are a visual form of entertainment yes, but this is a competition for the best DJ. I don't mind a bit of a spin around or switching the fader under your leg but I've no interest in seeing you move a fader with your groin. I find DJ's more interesting when they make something different from the tracks they are spinning rather than endless loops which lose their timing because the DJ is trying to pull the record back with their foot.
It had it's time but beat juggling changed the game.
@@TheMeeesterT Different strokes for different folks. As you can see from reactions, body tricks are still wildly popular. In any sort of a performance competition, the audience response has to be a factor.

Both sets were fresh. Baby g was more entertaining and difficult. Steve D was more technical and innovative. Close call I'm sure.
No offense, but I do the old school battle DJing and I think DJs attempting to "make music" and being what's seen as "creative is NO WHERE NEAR learning an actual instrument and producing beats, which is why it's rare and indeed valued to be a DJ that actually makes music, in most cases EDM and electonic music guys. It takes TRUE creativity to actually make music VS just cutting up cut outs and piecing things together that sound like $hit to anyone with an ear. Sure some sound better than other, but I can teach almost anyone to DJ battle in a year. You won't learn a musical instrument well enought to perform for at least 3 years if you really push it hard and much more if you're not really putting everything into it. So I'd rather be entertained by a guy like Baby G vs bad sounding beat juggling of Steve Dee
