performing as a solo musician is NOT about the difficulty of the pieces, it is about how you communicate with the audience. I bet the 7 year old (unless a virtuoso) was not 100% in tune. I went to listen to this amazing violinist not long ago who turned up and played a variety of pieces including one that is on the abrsm grade 1 violin exam list
Giuseppe Tartini (1692-1770) wrote 50 variations on a theme by A. Corelli (1653-1713), most likely as exercises for students, from which Fritz Kreisler (1875-1962) chose the theme with three variations and sometimes played it as an encore in his concerts. - Garret plays exactly that Kreisler version.

Because putting down obvious talent and listing the most legendary musicians of a much older generation as some sort of vindication isn't remotely ridiculous.
Garrett's performance is very good. It's a shame about the corny backing orchestra - this should be played on the violin with piano alone - they only manage to distract from his masterful playing.
