“To retar” is an english word meaning “to provide with a new coating of tar”. It doesn’t help the understanding, so I found out that there is also an Ainu word spelt “retar” (with the Kana spelling being レタル) that means “to be white”. So I’m assuming that it’s meant to be a “spa to be white/clean”.

Yeah their website confirms レタル is white in the Ainu language.
I've not heard much Ainu being spoken so I don't know if it is pronounced "Retaru" as the katakana suggests or "Retar"...

@@SlenderHime You need to plug your car in, as cars in Canada have block heaters (a small heater that warms up your engine), and you need a strong battery. It takes 10-20 minutes to even start feeling heat in the car when driving. It is rather unpleasant (it sucks so much when it gets that cold).

Golden Kamuy is in my opinion one of the best anime/manga out there. Incredible story, amazing characters, top tier humour and overall just a fantastic time. A lot of the characters are fictionalized versions of real people like Shiratori Yoshie (The Escape King). Genuenly recommend it to anyone looking for a new series to watch. Could not stop watching it when I got started. Happy to see Joey bring it up since I rarely hear about it from others.

That hotel gave me backroom/liminal vibes for some reason.
Very distinctive appearance from outside, and a big contrast to its environment.
The heater area having seats as if people should be there surrounding it and keeping warm (but of course the heater was off for some reason).
The room being very odd, or maybe dated.
Just something odd about the place, but not necessarily bad if you ask me.
    ...
But anyways, I love Joey's vlog style. It's always felt cosy and never over the top.
Hokkaido is a place I'd love to visit one day. That can be said about anywhere in Japan, but Hokkaido and Okinawa in particular have very different vibes compared to the rest of Japan.
Glad that I got a little snippet into the Hokkaido trip, Joey!

For retar, it may come from the Ainu word レタル meaning "to be white", which my best guess is another way of saying "to be clean", which makes sense when applied to the spa. Perhaps a member of the Ainu is a staff there and wrote the sign, or perhaps they get alot of Ainu people staying there so they wrote that to help them understand?

The place became a complete ghost town after the bubble era, but Hoshino Resorts managed to turn it around after they purchased the place. Truly there is something about snow that makes one want ice cream. Even for me as a Canadian, surrounded by snow 8 months of the year! In the summer, I rarely have ice cream, I'm more of a slushie or popsicle person when it's hot. But as soon as snow hits the ground, you'd better believe I'm all about ice cream. I wonder why 😂

I love Tomamu, one of my favourite JPan ski resorts. ( there really is some nice powder you missed too Joey) You should’ve gone to Mina Mina beach ( indoors @ Tomamu ) for a total contrast. I also went to Abashiri….. no drift ice😔 but there was blue beer 😳
