Thx for the suggestions for a bench/wall mount option and vise mount in the comments below. I have added both of these at the makerworld link for the model.
Printing 2 of these was just the ticket for me. I have a spinal cord injury as a result of which I have severely impaired hand function and hand / wrist / arm strength. I can now open the spools myself without assistance, previously I had to ask someone else to open a bunch of them for me everytime I needed to do refills.
I printed the Spool Buddy yesterday, perfect fit. My dexterity is on the decline so the wrench is going to be a great help. I just have to find some one near me to print it as I've only the 'Mini', ( so far!). Cheers from the U.K.
As an alternative to the Stainless Steel pins you're using, 3mm drill rod, (not hardened) can be cut down, but you might have to resize the holes a bit. 3/32" is just under 2.5 mm, but it's probably a better match for the holes in the spool. An option for people with an A1 Mini, might be to eliminate the lever beyond the core , and make a bit of a hook at the core.
Great tool. For those of us outside the U.S> the dowel pins are 2.5mmx12mm ish. You can get those as slotted spring pins that will do the same job, or like I'm going to be doing - remix it to have 2mm holes and use some S/S welding rod. :)
The wrench is very cool, but you could make it kinda hands-free. Basically take off the end of the wrench and make both ends stop at the edge of the spool. Then, extend the model down below where the text is until it gets to the 'bottom' of the spool. So, you would have a rectangular shaped device that would sit flat on the table with the spool vertical. Then you could just twist the other side of the spool off and on. And as a bonus, it may print on the A1 Mini.
Very cool sir. I think if I had the permanent use of only one hand I've make the wrench a bit wider at the business end to support the spool and pop some holes in it so it could be screwed down to a bench for truly one handed operation.
I really like your video and this one is one of your best. Do you ever think about making the tool so it could sit in a vice and that way you could use it one-handed.
Can not seem to find the file for this wrench. Would be very helpfull to me as i lost my right arm years ago an just started 3d printing an find it tough some times to lock the spool back together.

I'm glad this was able to help you!

Printed the Spool tool and it works great. Thank you

Thanks for this tool. I bought some Bambu Labs filament a while ago and one reel was painful for my arthritic hands!
Think it could use breakable dowel guides instead of an extra tool. Also dowels can be inserted with heat similar to inserts
great idea, never thought about doing that

What I both love and hate about 3D printing is the possibility/temptation to spend 10h designing the perfect jig to be used for 10 seconds xD
accurate.
Not printing this one but for anyone inserting the dowel pins. Pliers like the knipex 86 05 15 work great for pressing stuff like this into prints.
Knipex stuff is tool candy :) Love mine
FPF on a monday!!! Woooo
YOU DID IT! Thank you!!!

You could make a version on A1-the mini if you cut off the part beyond the hub. Or just print the hub and attach it to a stick.
Thanks for sharing this.
I will definitely be printing this up.
Thanks. Printing the tools now. Very useful

good idea, I'm going to make a version that can be screwed down to a bench

Awesome!

I'll make a version that can be screwed down to a bench, and might whip one up that can go in a vise as well

Thank You !
You're welcome!
Could make one that screws to a wall or workbench.
in the works, I'll add it to makerworld when done

I liked the tool for the tool 🎉
Apparently this is so popular, Amazon is out of the dowel pins... :)
whoops, lol
I will use my drill press as a low power arbor press.
That should do just fine
very handy
Might have been worth making your pin installation tool the right thickness so you can't over do pressing the pins in.
Agreed. Good idea.
Quick question: what is the name of the calibration mat that you use and where can I get one?
Thanks.

thx for pointing that out. I just added it
👍👍😎👍👍
Nice, thanks?
