    Just built a Savage X SS kit, breaking in the engine now. So fun.

    im glad you enjoyed the video but its completely fine to do this if you know how to tune correctly, the higher temps caused by no airflow are easily fixed by running the engine richer, more fuel/oil getting in therefore helping to lubricate better and cooling the engine down, ive ran nitro engines for over 10 years and have engines with over 10 gallons through them still pulling strong. but at the end of the day, they are toys to be used, what annoys me is when people use the as ornaments...

    i love seeing when people do burnouts.. it just makes me wonder if your engine blew up yet or seized up from getting to hot because it wasnt being cooled down by air flowing through the heatsinks

    Bad ass trucks!! I'm not too familiar with nitro's but I definitly want to get either a Savage X 4.6 or a Savage Flux HP a $250 price difference is whats stopping me. Are they both 1/10th or 1/8th scale?

    rather run rich then lean right buy a temp gun and keep track of temp and they run quicker and save a lot of fuel great bashing guys

    • @jameswil
      @jameswil  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      matthew marrs yeah I prefer to run rich like you say, especially when I'm doing a bash like this. I do have a temp gun I just stopped using it as much unless I'm doing speed runs and want the engine running perfect. they are good to have. thanks for the comment 😁

    My Savage is way tougher than my Tmaxx I I got my Savage with Offna .18 Racing motor 3hp.and lots of extra parts in a trade for a helicopter. Your video is great fun fun. Hey the truck running real rich do you run 20 minutes like the average truck still running that rich probably not right I noticed you quit or is that from that hit into the bench.I would like to run that rich if I don.t loose speed. I never heard you guys hit second gear do those have a second like mine? Probably because your in a confined space you can adjust them to hit second sooner but it would start breaking your parts because it would make you faster right out of second gear.I notice a lot of guys aren't used to brake functions.You guys do alright in that department hard to brake on your back lol.but I did notice braking at critical cursive points that can take out front end parts hobby shop see shot loads of front end parts because guys never hit the brakes.

    9'500 RPM in idle, clutch engages at 12'000 RPM... That's how you fry a clutch like a boss!

    • @jameswil
      @jameswil  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      not sure what you mean? mine has thicker clutch springs than standard so it will engage at higher rpm than normal.

    • @Bandicoot803

      jameswil
      R.I.P. clutch pads.

    • @jameswil
      @jameswil  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Bandicoot803 once it's engaged it's not slipping, I've never replaced any clutch pads, only ever upgraded from 2 pads to 3 and stiffer springs.

    • @Bandicoot803
      @Bandicoot803 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      jameswil
      Don't tell me that an engaged clutch's not slipping, will ya? There is - and will be - always a certain degree of friction from the moment of contact between the pads and bell until the clutch bell is synchronized with the engine! That's how the clutch works in general! By the way, just to be curious, no offense, how are your clutch pads aligned?

    • @jameswil
      @jameswil  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Bandicoot803 well yes i agree there will always be some slipping with the clutch, i know it doesn't just engage and thats it. im not sure how to put it in to words properly but they are fitted so that when they open they engage with the inside of the bell length ways, (if you imagine the rotation of the engine) and not the other way as id imagine the tip would dig in. i believe i do it normal as its how all mine have been when i took them apart, mine on one of my main savages running a nosram .28 i have fitted 1.1mm thick clutch springs and i find that i can wheelie easier at higher speeds with a crisper low down response. however, ive never had clutch trouble with any of my savages and i have 7 plus 4 other nitro cars/trucks. im not arguing with you tho ha i can see i do give them some abuse

    I heard savage diffs go out alot, is that a true fact or no?

    • @jameswil
      @jameswil  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      yeah this used to be true for the old savage 21 and 25 when they had only 2 bevel gears in a plastic diff cup. but this was fixed a long time ago just before they introduced the savage x. there was a upgrade that's now fitted to all the new ones which have 4 bevel gears put inside a alloy diff cup, this is a huge improvement, i fitted these in all my savages about 6 years ago and haven't had one blow since, and as you can see, i don't go easy on my trucks haha

    • @Rebecca_The_Dragon
      @Rebecca_The_Dragon 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      how long do the engines last for you with that kind of abuse?

    • @jameswil
      @jameswil  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** i still have my standard s25 engine from 11 years ago running sweet, the only engine ive killed was a sh28. i landed upside down in grass with no bodyshell on and it cracked the crankcase. they take a lot of a abuse as long as you dont run them too lean. other than keeping the temperature down then the other main things are keeping dirt out and not having any air leaks. i would advise running small blocks up to .21 on 15-20% nitro and big blocks above .21 on 15-25% i dont think its worth trying to run them on 30%+ IMO

    Do people get mad alot when you're running a nitro?

    • @jameswil
      @jameswil  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      not usually but we have had one old guy phone the police once but they just asked us to move down a bit, not doing much wrong really as long as its not late at night, we don't do it all day, maybe 45 mins to a hour tops

    • @Bakkefication
      @Bakkefication 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      jameswil Do people show some interest sometimes?

    • @jameswil
      @jameswil  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bakkefication they are loud and the noise does travel quite far but like i say its not all day, but if noise is a issue then go brushless electric, savage flux hp is insane!
      yeah people usually show interest and ask questions, nothing negative as long as your not doing full speed flybys past there feet or chaseing there dogs haha

    • @Bakkefication
      @Bakkefication 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      jameswil I thought about electric, but I like the sound of nitros too much :)

  • @TheRyan13579

    The blue savage sounds a little lean in the low end just saying and the red one sounds way to rich

  • @jameswil
    @jameswil  10 ปีที่แล้ว

    The red one? I don't see a red one, maybe you know tuning like you know colours, either way my truck is tuned fine, pulls wheelies, idles and launches at full throttle and tops out the truck with a
    trail of smoke just like it should, been tuning them for over 10 years and have
    engines still running strong even after 10 gallons.
    I could run it leaner but at a cost the engine life...
    On the other hand, my friend doesn't tune his engine a lot and prefers to bash,
    so I can't say how his was tuned

    • @jameswil
      @jameswil  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Why not? there is oil in the fuel and if its tuned correctly there should be a smoke trail coming out of the back, it just seems as though there is a lot because they are stationary, and two together.

    • @roberthayslett8388
      @roberthayslett8388 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      jameswil the one seems to be running a little rich, but it doesnt hurt anything, it all depends on the weather that day! they are both running strong... but thats a given, its a savage

  • @swinydapooh
    @swinydapooh 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    dont do these burn outs with urs!!!! these are air cooled engines this means it needs the air to be rushing past the cooling fins to reduce the heat from the engine block!!

    • @jameswil
      @jameswil  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I do realise this, 15 years with nitro and you will understard they are also oil cooled. that will be why they run on a mixture or nitro and oil among other things and from the smoke you should be able to tell my truck was running on the rich side. this engine is still going strong now many gallons of fuel later. but thanks for the advice.

    I really do hope you cleaned yohr mess up if this is a public place. this is why us nitro owners cant use our cars in parks etc due to people been inconsiderate about property other than owned by them. If its your own land then fair do's but miss treating public places, that's another thing.

    • @jameswil
      @jameswil  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      james kilner it's a public park, we had previously spoken to the park keepers which told us to stay off a certain section where they had been planting seeds and told us the stay off the new bowling green. But basically do whatever we like with the rest of the park. Compared to the graffiti, vandalism, drug paraphernalia being left in the kids play area and off road bikes tearing up everything. I'm sure we didn't really do any harm...

    lol I had a taste of nitro motors when a neighbor handed me a saito fa-40 and I got it running, I don't get why anybody finds them attractive lol, they tend to blow up a lot, and nitro is $12/pint which is just insane! That is why I have a 1/5 scale gasser and my various electric rc's are much cheaper to operate lol

    Awesome vid! , cracks me up every time lol. Ive been trying to tune my savage x but im not having much luck. Abit of advise would be great. Took it for a run today, had it at the base settings i found online, i thought it was running rich enough so began leaning it up. Ended getting very hot and blowing (another!) glow plug. It has a new piston&sleeve with 5 or so tanks through it now. HPi R3 medium glow plug.If you could spare a few mins to watch my vid of it running today, maybe you can tell whats up with it, or how i should get it back to base settings. The sound it makes leads me to think its too rich but the fact it gets very hot makes me think its too lean!! cunfused now. th-cam.com/video/6j9mPZeZek8/w-d-xo.html
