I would love to see this. Having a prosthetic myself I honestly can't imagine what it'd be like to have one that's based off the electric signals thing... It looks beautiful honestly.
I saw this video a few times since it was uploaded. And every time I tear up. My grandad is an amputee, he has one leg removed up to it's socket. His passive prostheses is good, it's like the best 90's technologie can make. It's newer, but the tech is the same it was when he received his first leg. I know that his quality of life would be better with a better prostheses. He is quite old (84) and he's now much weaker, so his passive prostheses while still being a help, is also more of a burden. It's a heavy piece of metal, plastic, and other stuff I can't easily carry. I fills me with joy to know that today for many people their traumas are almost completely remedied by the technology, and sometimes technology even bestowes surplus benefits instead of all the drawbacks. I so wish this was accessible to everyone. So that otherwise healthy people would walk and run instead of using passive prostheses or, worse, a wheelchair. Racing cars and other fancy useless entertainment? Scrap that, that tech is a leech of resources which should be invested into improving the quality of life. I'm not against entertainment in general, but some of its forms are ridiculously excessive, a total waste. (Of course I know that these developments go over to other technologies like conventional cars, but they still waste a lot for... for what?) This topic teaches right into my heart, I'm sorry for the long read.
This is truly amazing! I teared up a little watching this, and I'm not even an amputee, but I've seen the struggles of so many who can't do the things they loved because of lost limbs.
This is the most amazing thing I have seen so far, I am impressed. Losing one foot or arm is the worst I can imagine, but this research will help many people in the future and takes away the fear and desperation.
Company: Look at this next step in human evolution, these bionic prostethics that are almost as good as normal limbs Also company: They're also a million dollars

First off, this is amazing, truly. So thankful for people and teams like this who find a way to create to help others. That said, I’m pretty sure this guy is the main boss in an upcoming Deus Ex prequel game.
Absolutely amazing. Just been reading the story of Hugh Herr and realizing how we sometimes people can surmount anything and the most difficult situations brings out the best ideas.
I actually love the fact that they don't try to make the limbs look "human", that would just make them weird looking and fall into the uncanny valley. Prothetics like these should look like cyborg limbs.
Hey, Derek! I was wondering if you could do a video about Biology vs Technology. To be more precise: Why is a biological body superior/inferior to technological. The advantages and disadvantages of cyborgs. Are our biological bodies simply just very advanced technological bodies? If so then when will we reach the tech to create, for example, regenerative technology(regenerative as our bodies are). And this topic, I think, if ever taken into consideration, should be analyzed by taking into account brains(brain technology?) and our body. If for example our bodies are highly advanced technological pieces then are our brains even more advanced than that? Can these two be even compared this way? For example if I crush an ant, then will I destroy technology far more superior than the technological advancements we've made so far? I find this topic very interesting and I sure can't be the only one. Cheers!
Technology imo is just much directed development to achieve certain task. All our natural bodies have on the other hand evolved slowly for millions of years in a completely undirected manner just based on survival of the fittest. Now that we have the ability to direct these changes ourselves, we don't need the entire slow natural selection process, we can just build what we want. We already have built legs comparable to our human ones. Only a matter if time when we are able to built artificial bodies which can completely supercede the abilities of our own bodies. Probably something equivalent will be possible for brain as well.
@@kunalsingh4418 Yes well. In a way the artificial bodies we've built are more superior to our biological bodies. They are more durable and often have more strength. However, they are not self-sustainable. I.e you cannot got into the nature and power that artificial body. This is something you can do with our biological body. At some point you could probably harness enough solar power and other energies to power your artificial body. It depends on the environment in which you want to keep it powered. Would be cool if we could power the artificial body via biological means as well (i.e eating :) ). I think brains in a way are much more complex though than any other part of the body. Specially in the function it serves. Every other organ we have has a "simple" task: pump blood, use oxygen, digest food for energy etc. And these functions they fulfill are much easier to replicate compared to replicating the function of the brain.
I like his mood,to loosing his leg like most of us,we would be down or in tears,or hopeless,he's confident and upbeat, and he makes loosing his legs worth while!
Amazing that scientists invented such prosthesis to help someone and also amazing that the character who had his legs amputated had the stature and force of will to be able to overcome what he did!!
Sensory information is quite imporant too. Knowing whether the position, location and environment of your limb through pain, heat and cold sensors are extremely important.
The greatest thing to come out of Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom is the advancement in prosthetic limbs due to the proliferation of IED's during those conflicts. Thanks, Al-Qaeda!
One of the positive sides of war is the advancement in science and engineering, the allocation of resources in WW2 to war efforts made the rocketry and space flight of the later decades possible. Arguably we could have just used those resources in peace but we can't know for sure.
I love the technology and happy to see people in need are using the tech to overcome boundaries. I just don’t want to see people willing to amputate themselves just gain these prosthetics
While u still use ur muscles(which means u will get tired)u will last significantly longer. And u wont get kramps. And u are less likely to get injured too
It depends on the legs! There are many different prostheses, and if you look at the kind of legs Oscar Pistorius used to wear to run, they actually have a sort of spring action built into them, which does help propel you forward.

Iron Man jet legs would be nice. Or maybe something out of Alita. Simple convertable roller blades...I'm already getting jealous. They can walk on fire ffs...
awesome. I wish _all_ amputees could get it. But also, I think nothing can replace the feeling of having real legs - although if you already _don't_ have 'em, being a cool badass cyborg is a good option
Give it 50 years and we'll be living in a cyberpunk reality. I can give my left arm for that as I am sure I'll be able to just get a wolmart replacement.
I wonder how long it will be before someone replaces all of their limbs and other body parts with specially made mech parts and turn themselves into the real life equivalent of a halfman/half spider/crab robot (ETC) videogame boss.. don't lie.. you KNOW someone *IS* going to do that eventually
Eliminating disability is about more than replacing a leg or an arm (or multiples of them) if you want to COMPLETELY eliminate disability you have to be able to replace spines, lungs, hearts, etc and that isn't even touching on the subject of mental disability. Its wonderful for people who can walk again but lets be realistic here, replacing arms and legs is probably the easiest fix of all of the disabilities.
Honestly, I can think of prosthetic legs not being too bad, but the hands are a completely different beast. Not having the presicion of a biological hand, even a Singular prosthetic finger would feel like a bigger challenge than the whole lower leg.
This was back in 2015 think about how much it must have advanced by now. I remember reading online like 3-4 years ago that a big problem with prosthetics is that you can't feel something that is touching the prosthetic such as when you put pressure with your feet on the pedal of a car (which was the example I read about) and how people with prosthetics don't drive as well as they used to if they can make it so that you sense what happening with your prosthetic such as someone or something touching your prosthetic arm or leg instead of only feeling something near where the prosthetic meets the amputated part of the body
imagine if an oldman can amputate his arms and feet and replace those with Prosthetics Limbs. then they can now save more energy they get from food only for the remaining body parts. we can use other energy such as electricity to move the prosthetics limbs. therefore, now oldman can live longer
aghaanantyab this is actually a really interesting thought! I’m going into the biomechatronics industry (which is basically biology + mechanical & electrical engineering) to make stuff like this and I’ll have to keep this in mind when working on synthetic body parts.
I'm sure that would make an old man live easier, but not longer. Working our cardiovascular system everyday reduces the chance of heart disease, which is the number 1 cause of death.

you cant get frosbit if have your limbs are metal
forget about global warming?
(Of course I know that these developments go over to other technologies like conventional cars, but they still waste a lot for... for what?)

The answer is yes, yes they can. Prosthetics can literally be made to fit any situation, unlike our feet.
I love the technology and happy to see people in need are using the tech to overcome boundaries. I just don’t want to see people willing to amputate themselves just gain these prosthetics
this guy's life seems so interesting. it would make a great movie or documentary
When you run with two bionic legs are you able to keep running or do you still get tired?
While u still use ur muscles(which means u will get tired)u will last significantly longer. And u wont get kramps. And u are less likely to get injured too
You will get tired quicker. You miss about 50 muscles and have to use more energy so you’ll tire out faster
It depends on the legs! There are many different prostheses, and if you look at the kind of legs Oscar Pistorius used to wear to run, they actually have a sort of spring action built into them, which does help propel you forward.
