    Here in the Chicago are of Illinois our basements are poured. Good video bud, my son and I are watching this one now after rewatching the hand signals video 👍🏻

    Good to know. We'll be digging our basement next year. Thanks for the video.

      You got it! Be sure to check further back in my channel. I've got some more videos on basements but unfortunately they are old and shaky because I was much more amateur at that time. Let me know if you have any specific questions regarding basement excavation and I'd be more than happy to do some videos on them.

    Around my area poured concrete with a footing is the norm. I know of some guys who have actually broken walls by gently placing dirt but it was mud! need to be careful with mud as its obviously way heavier than dry dirt and can cause a break in a long wall by simply placing it there. good explanations and video!

      Thanks man! Great point that I didn't even think about adding. Wet dirt/mud is a whole different animal. I had a former coworker pin a skid up against a basement due to sliding around in the mud. We had to bring in our dozer just to pull him out.

      Oh yeah working with mud is a whole other thing all together! you said it right haha

    how much of back fill can be gravel? can you go all the way up or will the weight collapse the wall

    • @DieselandIron
      @DieselandIron  ปีที่แล้ว

      Gravel will actually be lighter than soil if you are talking peastone. The problem there would be drainage issues. You will be creating a giant void where all of the surrounding groundwater will want to come into so your sump will be working overtime

    So you dont pack it? You just let it settle?

    • @DieselandIron
      @DieselandIron  ปีที่แล้ว

      Correct. The backfill is done pretty early on in construction so you allow the dirt to settle and then top it off during finish grade.

    Do not backfill until the floor is down. I had a house that the contractor backfilled, it rained and then they drove a tractor near a wall and completely did a V crack all the way thru. This was south of Omaha. The contractor wouldnt fess up to it. The city inspector just stood there thinking ...DUH. I should have taken them to court.

      @DieselandIron  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Backfilling before the floor is down isn't always an option but that's where a bad contractor can cost you a lot of money. This is a game of skill, not of plopping dirt down haphazardly.

      Well Mr sour puss, would you have watched a 2 hour long video of me running a dozer doing the whole backfill? That also wouldn't have given detail as to how to prevent a wall cracking or collapsing right? It's almost like there was a good reason for the approach I took...
      Tell your wife I applaud her patience.
